Roberto Cavalli228. Shorten that skirt… move those buttons… little touches before the big fashion show…

The models walk in front of me… these are the final touches before the big fashion show… the pressure is on us all… we are fighting against time…

It is always that way… it is a tradition… I remember one of my first fashion shows…

The following memoir is from my book soon to be released in mid-September…

It is 1973. For the past two years I have been working and collaborating with Henry Lehr and everything is going in the best possible way. In September we make an appointment with one another at the usual Chinese restaurant in Paris to discuss the next collection. This is customary for us, one of our habits. As soon as I see Henry I realize immediately by his smile that something is wrong… even his voice is different…

Henry has decided to terminate our collaboration… no reasons, no excuses… I do not ask for them, I’m disappointed… I have the strength to whisper “Ok, Henry ,” without leaking my disappointment through my eyes… the panic is torturing my stomach…

And what about our friendship, the bond between us? He is embarrassed and I am desperate. We leave each other like that… and we each go our separate ways… I see my future black… I see the darkness in front of me… I’m afraid…

My return trip from Paris to Florence is dramatic, I’m minimizing…

Each season Henry was sourced with new colors and new leathers… together we discussed the ideas of how to assemble everything. I am only twenty days away from my Fashion Show at La Sala Bianca in Florence!

I’ve never been afraid of anything … but I just feel lost… alone… once again… I am left only with my previous success… it does not allow me to make missteps.

I have crossed a “sea of waste” in a small boat before… so I can make it through this mess right now… I enter into my design studio, frightened and fierce, I look around… I cannot believe my eyes: I only have blue leather, mountains of blue leather! I have to prepare a summer collection and so I need light, fresh colors!

People want something new from me, I think of metallic colors… paints designed with tiny flakes of metal in them which add a sparkle… those metallic colors would solve my problem!

I am a fashion designer… an artist… a painter! I know… I’ll get some pieces of blue leather and lay them out on the printing table.

The leather is too dark!!!…

…the colors I use normally are not able to get a covering effect… I rush to buy several cans of metallic colors to which I add other colors… blue… yellow… and so on…

I begin to spread the colors on the leathers… the result is not bad… then when I start to print my drawings…

…the results are amazing!!!

I am rewarded with a long, warm and confident applause! I’ve done it, once again. It is a futuristic, glamorous, sensual collection…

It’s a success… one that leaves no room for criticism… they all agree, the press and the buyers! I am proud. I feel that there is a recognized Roberto Cavalli style!

The more success follows the more I create… people wear my creations and look for them in the boutiques… Bloomingdale’s arranges an imaginative advertising campaign in American newspapers and Roberto Cavalli becomes an international brand…

But my head is somewhere else… I have to go ahead and continue to invent… Florence is my home town but I need to travel, to discover… I am nomadic by nature, I am always on the run toward something new and unexpected…

Vi abbraccio…

I LOVE YOU
