425. Clouds…

Roberto Cavalli425. Clouds…

When I look up at the clouds I want to call out to them ‘Wait for me, I want to come with you!’

I have always been fascinated by the sky, it has always given me a sense of infinity.

When I decided to learn to fly a helicopter, my dream was to turn myself into a modern Icarus and fly higher and higher, get closer to the sun and catch some of its energy…

Luckily the helicopter blades are not made of wax but of composite material which tolerates mechanical stress and high temperatures… The helicopter is an amazing machine that holds a great fascination for me. To become a helicopter pilot was one of my big dreams.

I remember that as soon as I was able to pilot my helicopter I couldn’t wait to get home after a long day at work and get up in the air and fly over my beloved Florence. It was the best part of my day. The photographers call it the Golden Hour. It’s that time of the day between the end of the day and the beginning of the sunset when the sun is approaching the horizon and the sunlight has to pass through more of the atmosphere so more of the light is indirect changing the lightning radio. For a very brief time colours magically enjoy a golden glow, more vivid…

Flying over Florence chasing the sunset is something special, something magical… a show that the eyes see, that enters your heart and is imprinted in your memory but is so difficult to express in words alone and yet is palpable…

The clouds are there to make the setting for this show… their shapes, that no hand has drawn, give their own meaning to the sky… What would a sky without clouds be?

The Golden Hour lasts only a short while… just moments that are gone as quickly as they appear… Fortune favours those who are prepared.

I often wonder why so many good things are gone in a flash… we live so intensely in such ephemeral moments…
