64. The Great Designer…

The great designer is sitting on a white couch, surrounded and flattered by friends and fans. He is holding a flute of champagne. He immediately offers me one without knowing who I am. He is very kind and cordial, more so when the beautiful blond lady tells him my name and explains the originality of my work.
I notice his interest right away… his questions become more searching as he tries to learn more. I do not lack fantasy, even when inventing absurd tales. I have the ability to be quick, believable and keep a straight face.
In fact, I explain all of my painting and printing techniques, thinking of the fabrics, sweaters and pullovers I am printing daily. I just change the material from fabric to leather!
He asks me to bring some samples the next day. He will be leaving early in the afternoon, so, the appointment is made for late morning!
My head is spinning like a top, my friend asks me what I am thinking about so earnestly.
What colors am I might going to use? Where can I buy light glove leather? How can I roll it on the table to get a perfect print surface?
Next morning… get up early… I remember that my warehouse keeper Gianluigi used to work in a knitwear factory where they were using leather patches… the ones you apply to the elbows of shirts… Gianluigi procures me the leather and begins to help me make the leather soft and supple… a very light leather, light beige in color… the design I print on it is that of a small flower… 5 or 6 colors… very nice.
THIS IS THE FIRST TIME IN THE WORLD THAT LEATHER IS PRINTED ON AS IF IT WERE FABRIC!
I am very pleased… I rush to the appointment with the great designer. As soon as he sees my samples he cannot hide his enthusiasm. He begins to talk about collections… exclusivity… things that are new to me. I take my time and promise that I will soon get in touch!
This story is very important. From this strange coincidence the very idea of creating my first fashion collection is born.

Il grande designer è seduto su un divano bianco, circondato e ossequiato da amici e fans. Tiene in mano un flute di champagne. Mi offre subito da bere senza sapere chi fossi. E’ molto cordiale e gentile, ancora di più quando la bella signora bionda gli dice il mio nome e gli spiega l’originalità delle mie creazioni.
Noto subito un certo interesse… le sue domande vanno oltre per cercare di saperne di più. La fantasia non mi è mai mancata, anche nell’inventare storie assurde. Ho la capacità di essere veloce, con la faccia seria, credibile.
In realtà, gli spiego la tecnica della mia pittura e stampa, pensando ai tessuti, pullover e magliette che stampo giornalmente. Ho solo cambiato il materiale, dal tessuto alla pelle!
Mi chiede di portargli alcuni campioni il giorno dopo. Deve partire presto nel pomeriggio, quindi, l’appuntamento è per fine mattinata!
La mia testa incomincia a girare come una trottola, il mio amico mi chiede insistentemente a cosa sto pensando.
Quali colori usare? Dove comprare una pelle leggera da guanteria? Come stendere la pelle sul tavolo da stampa per avere una perfetta adesione?
La mattina dopo, mi alzo prestissimo, mi viene in mente che un mio magazziniere, Gianluigi, aveva lavorato in un maglificio dove producevano toppe di pelle, quelle che si applicano ai gomiti delle maglie. Gianluigi, mi procura la pelle e mi assiste nel cercare di rendere la pelle morbida e speciale. E’ una pelle leggerissima, beige chiaro, ci stampo un disegno floreale, 5 o 6 colori, molto carino.
QUESTA E’ STATA LA PRIMA PELLE AL MONDO STAMPATA CON UN MOTIVO, COME SE FOSSE UN TESSUTO!
Sono molto soddisfatto del risultato, corro all’appuntamento con il grande designer. Appena vede i miei campioni non riesce a celare il suo entusiasmo. Incomincia a parlarmi di collezioni… di esclusiva… tutte cose nuove per me. Prendo tempo e gli prometto che sarei andato presto a trovarlo!
Questa storia è molto importante. Da questa strana coincidenza è nata l’idea di creare la mia prima collezione di moda.
Adesso vi lascio. Voglio lasciarvi il tempo di riflettere su questa storia…!
