Art is closely related to the ability to transfer emotions…

Through my drawings, through my Fashion I wish to convey my emotions…. emotions that come from the experience of a lifetime… from my travels around the world… from the people who love me and the people I love… the life of each of us is an artistic journey with a beginning but no end…

I love to look at the many designs you send me… your personalities, your deepest emotions shine through them. Your most frequently asked question is: “How can I become a Fashion Designer?”

Here are my suggestions…
Study the History of Art, make friends with the greatest Artists, of the present and the past. Study not only their works but their lives, the paths they created for themselves as they headed into what for them was the unknown…
As we look back, in retrospect, on the lives of each of them we can see a common thread. As they looked ahead and as we look ahead has anyone been able to predict where that thread will lead…?

To be a fashion designer you need to be prepared to head out into the unknown…

To find yourself, your artistic signature, create and experiment, be daring and always listen to your heart, follow your instincts, your gut… there are different ways of “knowing”…

Look around, learn to observe and understand the secrets of God, his love for colour and the harmony in the shapes of his creations…

Travel, explore, expand your horizons, assimilate different cultures, make new friends, talk to people and listen to their stories… everyone has a story… do you have the wit to learn from it?

Technology is your best friend. Technology will help you become more productive, more creative and help you make better use of your time. Learn to speak the language of the computer and take a programming course. You will learn the logic of programming, the small building blocks of solutions. It will help you face the rapidly changing dynamics of real life problems…

Don’t be afraid to be afraid… a little heart-pounding will remind you that you are still alive…

396. L’Arte di trasferire Emozioni…

L’arte è strettamente connessa alla capacità di trasferire emozioni…

Attraverso i miei disegni, attraverso la mia moda desidero trasferirvi le mie emozioni… emozioni che provengono dalle esperienze di una vita… dai miei viaggi in giro per il mondo… dalle persone che mi amano e dalle persone che amo… la vita di ognuno di noi è un percorso artistico con un inizio ma senza una fine…

Mi piace guardare i molti disegni che mi inviate… le vostre personalità, le vostre emozioni più profonde splendono attraverso i vostri disegni. La vostra domanda più frequente è: “Come posso diventare un designer di moda?”

Questi sono i miei suggerimenti…
Studiate Storia dell’Arte, fate amicizia con i grandi artisti del presente e del passato, studiate non solo le loro opere ma la loro vita, il percorso che si sono creati nel loro viaggio artistico verso l’ignoto… Se ci voltiamo a guardare il passato, in retrospettiva, nelle vite di ognuno di loro riusciamo a scorgere un comune filo conduttore. Mentre loro guardavano al futuro e mentre noi guardiamo verso il futuro riusciamo a immaginare dove questo comune filo conduttore ci porta…?

Per diventare un designer di moda dovete essere preparati a dirigervi verso l’ignoto…

Per trovare in voi stessi la vostra vena artistica, unica fra tutte, create e sperimentate, osate e ascoltate il vostro cuore, seguite il vostro istinto, ci sono tanti modi diversi per scoprire…

Guardatevi intorno, imparate a osservare e a carpire i segreti di Dio, il suo amore per i colori e l’armonia nelle forme delle sue creazioni…

Viaggiate, esplorate, ampliate i vostri orizzonti, assimilate le diverse culture, fate nuove amicizie, parlate con la gente e ascoltate le loro storie… ognuno ha una sua storia… avete lo spirito per ascoltare e imparare?

La tecnologia è la vostra migliore amica. La tecnologia vi aiuterà a diventare più produttivi e a usare in modo migliore il vostro tempo. Imparate a parlare il linguaggio dei computer e fate un corso di programmazione. Imparerete la logica della programmazione, vi aiuterà a risolvere i problemi della vita reale…

We are in the early seventies, the world has discovered my fashion. I am flooded with orders and busy at work for the new collections…

The phone rings, the receptionist announces that Mrs Ponti is on the line.

Destiny… usually I never answer calls from people I don’t know, but this time I decide to take the call.
I cannot believe It, it’s Sofia Loren! With her sweet and sexy voice she tells me that she has heard so much about me and my fashion that, in addition to her desire to wear my dresses, she would be very pleased to meet me.

I seem to dream. Yet an uncontrollable shyness, mixed with a kind of personal reserve, stops me. I feel as though I have been punched in the stomach… I have lost my voice.

I consider myself a worker of fashion, certainly not a stylist. At that time fashion designers were not superstars.

I like to create, to invent, but I recognize myself more as a crazy inventor than a fashion designer. More phone calls follow and I have the pleasure of talking with her, but I cannot assure her that I will go to meet her. I’m looking for silly reasons, stupid excuses to let her know that I cannot.

I don’t feel up to it. Maybe I am, but that’s not my world. I love the simple things. Why am I like this? Maybe that stammer that for so many years affected me physically had also affected me psychologically?

Or am I fascinated with her to the point of not wanting to touch the dream for fear this bubble will burst?

She is on a pedestal and I cannot get there. In the end I do not go! I send the dresses to her but I could not find the courage to go there personally.

Am I wrong? Certainly, I will regret it in the next ten years. I made a mistake, certainly, because again – because of my character – I denied myself the opportunity to learn not only from a great woman, but a true legend, an icon of cinema.

I will meet her several times many years later, but I never find the courage to mention that episode of my early shyness.

I wonder how many would have liked to be in my position at that
time. Few would have given up such an opportunity…

393. Quella volta che non incontrai Sofia Loren…

Siamo agli inizi degli anni settanta, il mondo scopre la mia moda. Sono sommerso dagli ordini e dal lavoro per le nuove collezioni…

Squilla il telefono, mi annunciano una certa signora Ponti.

Una fatalità̀, in genere non rispondo mai alle chiamate di persone che non conosco, ma questa volta decido di rispondere.

Non posso crederci. È Sofia Loren! Con quella sua voce sexy e dolce insieme mi dice che aveva sentito parlare tanto di me e che, oltre al desiderio d’indossare una mia giacca, le avrebbe fatto molto piacere conoscermi.

Mi sembra di sognare. Eppure un’irrefrenabile timidezza, mista a una forma di riservatezza, mi blocca. Sento come un colpo allo stomaco e la voce mi sparisce.

Io mi considero un operaio della moda, non certo uno stilista. Tra l’altro sono ancora lontani i tempi in cui i designer di moda diventeranno dei divi.

A me piace creare, inventare, ma mi riconosco più̀ nella figura dell’inventore pazzo che in quella del creatore di moda. Ci sentiamo di nuovo, scambio altre due parole con lei, ma non le assicuro che sarei andato a trovarla. Sto cercando sciocche ragioni, stupide scuse per farle capire che non mi è possibile.

Non mi sento all’altezza o forse lo sono, ma quel mondo non è il mio. Amo le cose semplici. Perché́ sono così? Forse quel balbettare che per tanti anni mi ha condizionato fisicamente mi aveva anche messo dei freni psicologici?

Oppure sono affascinato a tal punto da non voler toccare il sogno con mano per paura di rovinarlo?

Lei è su un piedistallo e io non posso arrivarci. Alla fine non ci vado! Le faccio avere i capi ma non trovo il coraggio di andarci personalmente.

Sbaglio? Di certo, me ne pentirò nei dieci anni successivi. Ho commesso un errore, sicuramente, perché́ ancora una volta – a causa del mio carattere – mi sono precluso la possibilità̀ di conoscere non solo un grande personaggio, ma un vero mito, un’icona del cinema.

La incontrerò varie volte, molti anni dopo, ma non ho mai trovato il coraggio di tornare su quell’episodio.

Chissà̀ quanti avrebbero voluto essere al mio posto in quel momento. Pochi avrebbero rinunciato a una simile occasione…

My first showroom was very small. Just over seventy square meters. I was proud… an important address… Via della Spiga in Milan.

It was there that I decided to present one of my own first fashion shows. I arranged the authorization to close the street for an afternoon to install a long catwalk. Emotion! Emotion! Emotion! Everything was wonderful… a big adrenaline rush!

I then opened my first Press Office in Via del Gesù in Milan. Simple and efficient. It was run by young people full of enthusiasm with faith in me and in my creations. We were trying to convey to journalists from around the world the news about my fashion, my creations, my ideas! It was really good to work and have fun at the same time… believing in what we were doing!

One afternoon a beautiful lady, accompanied by a handsome husband pushing a baby carriage with a beautiful baby, entered my Press Office.

The receptionist explained to the couple it was not the Roberto Cavalli Boutique at that location, but the Press Office. Then, one of the secretaries recognized the two as Cindy Crawford and her husband… she rushed to invite them to see the collection saying that Mr. Cavalli would be happy to meet them…

I spoke to Cindy over the phone and let her know that in a few days I would be in New York and we decided to set a meeting there.

I was thrilled, I had always dreamed of Cindy. I had always seen her as the most beautiful woman in the world! We met in her husband Rande’s bar, right in front of Central Park.

For some reason, when you put someone on a pedestal, you think of that person as unapproachable However, Cindy was very gracious and our meeting proved to be very special. She was the first real star I ever met!

Cindy was my first great friend. We started talking and after a while it seemed we had known one another forever. We met the next day for dinner and a few months later she and her two children were guests in our home in Florence.

Cindy is a beautiful woman and a very special person.

Since then I have met many of the stars in the star system…

Il mio primo showroom era piccolissimo. Poco più̀ di settanta metri quadri. Ne andavo fiero, un indirizzo importante, Via della Spiga a Milano.

Fu proprio lì che decisi di fare uno dei primi défilé́. Chiesi il permesso di chiudere la strada per un pomeriggio per piazzare una lunga passerella. emozione, emozione, emozione! Tutto era utile per aumentare la mia adrenalina!

In un locale di via del Gesù̀ organizzammo il nostro primo ufficio stampa. Semplice, ma efficiente, ragazzi giovanissimi, pieni di entusiasmo e di fiducia in me e nelle mie creazioni cercavano di trasmettere ai giornalisti di tutto il mondo le novità̀ che uscivano dalla mia testa! Era molto bello lavorare e divertirsi nello stesso tempo, credere in ciò̀ che fai!

Un pomeriggio entrò per sbaglio una bellissima signora accompagnata da un bellissimo marito che spingeva una carrozzina con un bellissimo bambino.

La ragazza del centralino fece subito capire alla coppia che non si trattava del negozio di Roberto Cavalli, ma dell’ufficio stampa. Loro fecero dietrofront, ringraziando. Solo all’ultimo momento un’impiegata riconobbe nei due Cindy Crawford e marito… si precipitò a invitarli a vedere la collezione, dicendo che il signor Cavalli sarebbe stato felice di conoscerli…

Le parlai al telefono, pochi giorni dopo sarei stato a New York e decidemmo d’incontrarci là.

Ero emozionato, avevo sempre sognato Cindy. L’avevo sempre vista come la più̀ bella donna del mondo! Ci incontrammo in un bar del marito Rande, davanti a Central Park.

Chissà̀ perché́, quando metti una persona sul piedistallo, la pensi sempre irraggiungibile. Il nostro incontro fu veramente speciale, la prima vera star!

Cindy fu la mia prima grande amica! Cominciammo a parlare e dopo un po’ mi sembrava di conoscerla da sempre. Ci ritrovammo il giorno seguente a cena e dopo qualche mese era mia ospite a Firenze con i suoi due bambini.

Una donna bellissima e una persona speciale.

Dopo di lei ho conosciuto quasi tutte le celebrities di Hollywood e della musica.
