February is a special month. It contains within it a special birthday… this year I wanted to celebrate this special occasion at Cavalli Island.

The lake in which the Island is situated is now completely frozen. No longer do you need a boat to reach the mainland. You can safely walk or take the Hovercraft and go “flying over” the icy surface covered with snow.

Here at Cavalli Island we have a “full house” with no more beds available. I look forward to Spring when I can get organized and build additional housing for my dear family, friends and guests…

After so many years I have finally managed to find the time to ride a horse again… it is a wonderful feeling. I missed it…

I would like to reply to many of you who have written to me asking for advice…

The secret of your success will lie in three simple words: Passion, Perseverance and Love.

Passion will be your guide. Passion will help you figure out which is the best way to reach your inner heart…

Perseverance will allow you to overcome any obstacle, the moments of despair, the difficulties and failures that inevitably will be the companions of your journey.

Love is above everything. Love for Creation. Love of who will be at your side, always, unconditionally.

My long adventure into the world of Fashion has been full of successes but also some not so easy moments that I survived thanks to Passion, Perseverance and Love.

It seems only yesterday the 1966 flood in Florence destroyed everything. Florence was covered in mud… centuries of history, precious manuscripts and priceless works of art were irreparably damaged.

My factory was completely flooded, the fabrics, the colours… I lost everything but my Passion… I rolled up my sleeves and with my proverbial Perseverance and help from friends and colleagues I started from scratch, again.

The difficulties sometimes seem to be insurmountable mountains. Often just a different point of view, a different perspective, are sufficient to overcome the momentary impasse.

Love is the great engine of our existence. Love always allows us to see a bit farther.

Love completes us.

Febbraio è un mese speciale che racchiude al suo interno un compleanno speciale… quest’anno ho voluto festeggiare questa speciale ricorrenza a Cavalli Island.

Il Lago che circonda l’isola è ormai completamente ghiacciato e per raggiungere la terra ferma non serve più la barca ma la si può tranquillamente raggiungere a piedi o con Hovercraft “sorvolando” la superficie ghiacciata ricoperta di neve.

Qui a Cavalli Island abbiamo raggiunto il “tutto esaurito”!

Dopo tanti anni sono finalmente riuscito a trovare il tempo per rimontare a cavallo, è una sensazione bellissima. Mi mancava…

Vorrei rispondere a quanti di voi mi hanno…

Il segreto del vostro successo è racchiuso in tre semplici parole, Passione Perseveranza e Amore.

La Passione sarà la vostra guida. La Passione vi aiuterà a capire quale è la strada migliore per raggiungere il profondo del vostro cuore…

La Perseveranza vi permetterà di superare ogni ostacolo, i momenti di sconforto, le difficoltà e gli insuccessi che immancabilmente saranno i compagni del vostro viaggio.

L’Amore è al di sopra di tutto. L’amore per il Creato. l’Amore di chi sarà al vostro fianco, sempre, incondizionatamente.

La mia lunga avventura nel mondo della Moda è colma di successi ma anche di tanti momenti meno facili che ho superato grazie alla Passione, alla Perseveranza e… all’Amore.

Mi sembra ieri quando l’alluvione a Firenze nel 1966 distrusse tutto. Firenze era ricoperta di fango… secoli di storia, di preziosi manoscritti e di inestimabili opere d’arte furono irrimediabilmente danneggiate.

La mia azienda fu completamente inondata, i tessuti, i colori… persi tutto ma non la Passione… mi rimboccai le maniche e con la mia proverbiale Perseveranza e l’aiuto dei miei collaboratori e amici ricominciai, ripartendo da zero, di nuovo.

Le difficoltà a volte sembrano montagne insormontabili. Spesso un punto di vista diverso, una differente prospettiva sono sufficienti per superare quel momentaneo impasse.

L’Amore è il grande motore della nostra esistenza. L’Amore ci permette di vedere sempre un po’ più avanti.

It’s the 90’s. That was the time when the mono-brand boutiques were born.

I did not have a marketing structure in place at that time. Things worked, but I wasn’t as famous as I had been. Even my lady friends who came to my showroom weren’t showing their usual enthusiasm.

Most of the time they did not buy anything with the excuse that we didn’t have their right size or colour… Maybe I was not cool anymore…

I decided to insist that Eva should begin to work with me. At first I involved her in the print shop, where I needed help, but I realized almost immediately that she would be much better suited to deal with the fashion, an area certainly more in keeping with her beauty and her style.

Then I tried to keep her nearby during the development of the collections, although her shyness sometimes made her feel a little out of her comfort zone…

Her mother tongue, German, finally made me realize that Eve was perhaps more inclined to fit into the commercial side of the business. She began to travel with me to Munich and to Dusseldorf – which was becoming a very important hub for fashion in Germany – where we decided to open a beautiful showroom.

Eva began to travel. She liked it so much and had a real talent for keeping in touch with customers and handling orders coming from the German, Austrian and Swiss markets.

In this way Eva always been known for her beauty, her grace and her style came increasingly to be recognized for her keen fashion sense and business mind.

What can I tell you of these years of happiness as a loving couple, with our beautiful children Rachele and Daniele growing into maturity?

The only problem was that we became so absorbed and passionate about the development of the business that sometimes we feared that we were not devoting enough time to the family.

Everything comes at a price, including success.

403. La nascita delle boutique mono-griffe…

Anni 90, era il momento in cui nascevano le boutique mono-griffe.

Io non avevo ancora una mia vera organizzazione. Le cose funzionavano, ma non ero più̀ sulla cresta dell’onda come prima. Lo capivo anche dalle amiche che venivano nel mio showroom senza però mostrare il solito entusiasmo.

A volte non compravano niente con la scusa che non c’era la taglia o il colore… Forse non ero più̀ cool!

Decisi di insistere affinché́ Eva cominciasse a seguirmi nel lavoro. All’inizio provai a coinvolgerla in stamperia, dove avevo bisogno d’aiuto, ma capii quasi subito che sarebbe stata molto più̀ adatta a occuparsi della parte moda, un ambito senz’altro più̀ consono alla sua bellezza e al suo stile.

Cercai allora di tenermela vicina durante lo studio delle collezioni, anche se la sua timidezza a volte non la faceva sentire all’altezza…

La sua madrelingua, il tedesco, alla fine mi fece capire che Eva forse era più̀ portata a inserirsi nella parte commerciale. Iniziò a viaggiare con me a Munich e a Düsseldorf… e fu proprio in quest’ultima città, che stava diventando un nodo molto importante per la moda in Germania, che decidemmo di aprire un bellissimo showroom.

Eva cominciò a viaggiare. Le piaceva tantissimo occuparsi di comunicazione, le piaceva tenere i contatti con i clienti e gestire gli ordini che arrivavano dai mercati tedesco, austriaco e svizzero.

In quel modo usciva sempre più̀ dai panni della ragazza apprezzata per la sua bellezza, per entrare in un ruolo più̀ importante, che alla fine l’affascinava e la rendeva sempre più̀ affascinante.

Cosa poter dire di dieci anni di felicità di una coppia che si ama, di Rachele e Daniele che diventavano sempre più̀ belli?

L’unico problema era che il lavoro ci assorbiva sempre più tempo e avevamo l’impressione che non ci dedicavamo abbastanza alla famiglia.

Ogni cosa ha un suo prezzo, incluso il successo…

In the late 80’s, Eva and I started traveling all over Morocco, Kenya, India, Nepal and Japan.

Eva loved the adventure as I did. We stayed at hotels of all kinds, met interesting people and we liked the local cuisine.

We were curious about everything. I had already visited many of those countries and was able to introduce Eva to many places familiar to me. I felt like a mentor to her.

We bought silk and other local materials which we took to local tailors to have dresses made right on the spot according to our designs. For few rupees did everything we asked and handed our finished clothes to us in just a few hours.

We liked to swim in those clean seas and then lie down on the beach for hours without thinking about anything, just us with our happiness!

We were always looking for new markets and the locals were happy to meet with us and offer their help. This was true everywhere, in Morocco as in India.

Those markets were a feast of colours and scents. Beautiful women, rich and poor alike, capitalizing on their local makeup and jewellery, made the most of themselves in their local saris or caftans.

Unique faces enhanced with coloured or black makeup according to the local traditions! We always arrived home with strange objects or fabrics that were often put aside in a few months, but it was fun to try carpets and fabrics in our Florence home… these experiments were well worth the effort.

We came back increasingly close to each other, with eyes and minds full of images, images that I captured with my camera.

I then found I have a passion for photography and I liked to think that everything I saw and photographed could become a new design for my clothes. Deserts… sunsets… trees… clouds… fish… birds… I photographed everything I liked and everything that intrigued me.

Then, when I returned to Florence, I shut myself in my darkroom for hours and hours, developing and printing. I had built a real photo studio in an outbuilding in the garden with all kinds of imaginable equipment.

401. Marocco, Kenya, India, Nepal, Giappone…

Era la fine degli anni 80 e con Eva cominciammo a viaggiare dappertutto: Marocco, Kenya, India, Nepal, Giappone.

Eva amava l’avventura come me. Andavamo a infilarci in alberghi di ogni tipo, incontravamo persone interessanti e ci piaceva assaggiare ogni piatto della cucina locale.

Eravamo curiosi di tutto. In molti di quei paesi io c’ero già̀ stato e mi piaceva ripercorrere con Eva le stesse strade. Mi sentivo un po’ un pigmalione.

Compravo sete, abiti del luogo, correvamo a farci confezionare dai sarti del posto i vestiti che ci inventavamo sul momento, e loro per poche rupie ci cucivano tutto quello che volevamo e ce lo consegnavano in poche ore.

Ci piaceva fare il bagno in quei mari puliti e poi rimanere sdraiati per ore senza pensare a niente, soli con la nostra felicità!

Eravamo sempre alla ricerca di nuovi mercatini e la gente del posto era contenta di vederci e di offrirci il loro aiuto. In Marocco come in India.

Quei mercati erano una festa di colori e di profumi. Donne bellissime con trucchi e gioielli tipici di quei luoghi, poveri, ma incredibilmente ricchi per come li accostavano ai sari o ai caffettani.

Visi unici, con trucchi colorati, o solo neri a seconda dei luoghi! Tornavamo a casa sempre pieni di oggetti o di tessuti strani di cui spesso ci disfacevamo nel giro di pochi mesi, ma il divertimento di provare i tappeti e i tessuti nella casa di Firenze valeva certo la pena di tanta fatica.

Tornavamo sempre più̀ affiatati, con gli occhi e la mente pieni di immagini. Immagini che fissavo con la mia macchina fotografica.

Scoprii infatti di avere una grande passione per la fotografia e mi piaceva pensare che ogni cosa che vedevo e fotografavo potesse diventare una stampa per i miei abiti. Deserti… tramonti… alberi… nuvole… pesci… uccelli… Fotografavo tutto ciò̀ che mi piaceva, tutto ciò̀ che m’incuriosiva.

Poi, quando tornavo a Firenze, mi chiudevo ore e ore nella camera oscura a sviluppare e a stampare. Avevo costruito un vero e proprio studio fotografico in una dépendance in giardino, provvisto di ogni genere di attrezzatura possibile e immaginabile.
