285. Mother’s Day is the Most Special Day…

It was 1944 and we had just moved to Florence… I was only 4 years old… the memory of my Mom has a special place in my heart…

Our life had its rhythms. My Mom was working, my sister Lietta was going to school and my grandfather was an artist painter. It was autumn and the days were still warm. Everything looked peaceful, almost suspended in an apparent tranquility.

Then came the cold. Winter was always hard in Florence. A few degrees above zero, freezing outside amounted to an unbearable cold inside the house. The chilblains alternated with lice, one rub of olive oil for chilblains and camphor oil for lice.

During the winter, the best moment was when we went to sleep with that little bit of warmth that Mom was able to procure with small pieces of coal she was able to reach and put in the bed-warmer.

That warmth for me was the antechamber of heaven. I went to sleep happy, waiting for Mom to insert the bed-warmer under the covers, a sort of cage made of wood with a hook in the center that held the terra cotta pot full of burning coal.

I waited for a goodnight kiss from Mom and then I immersed myself in my dreams…

In the morning I opened my eyes to the sound of the earliest carts clattering on the cobblestones as the farmers made their way to market. That was the signal for the brioche vendor to raise his loud and raucous voice. A reminder of the start of a new day.

Quick as a cat, I put on a sweater and I was heading out holding hands with mom to buy two still-hot-brioches for Lietta and me.

285. La Festa della Mamma è il Giorno più Speciale…

Era il 1944, ci eravamo appena trasferiti a Firenze… io avevo solo 4 anni… il ricordo della mamma occupa un posto speciale nel mio cuore…

La nostra vita aveva i suoi ritmi.  La mamma lavorava, mia sorella Lietta andava a scuola e il nonno dipingeva.  Era autunno e le giornate erano ancora tiepide.  Tutto sembrava sereno, quasi sospeso in un’apparente tranquillità.  

Poi arrivò il freddo.  L’inverno era sempre rigido a Firenze.  Qualche grado sopra lo zero, fuori, equivaleva a un gelo insopportabile dentro casa.  I geloni si alternavano ai pidocchi.  Era sempre uno strofinare d’olio d’oliva per i geloni e olio di canfora per i pidocchi. 

D’inverno il momento più bello era quando s’andava a dormire con quel poco di calore che la mamma era in grado di procurare con i piccoli pezzi di carbone che riusciva a racimolare per metterli dentro allo scaldino. 

Quel calore per me era l’anticamera del paradiso. Andavo a dormire felice, aspettavo che la mamma infilasse sotto le coperte quel tamburlano di legno con un gancio al centro che reggeva il vaso in terracotta pieno di carbone acceso. 

Aspettavo l’ultimo bacino di mamma e mi immergevo nei miei sogni… 

Al mattino aprivo gli occhi al rumore dei primi carretti dei contadini che andavano al mercato sferragliando sui ciottoli. Era il segnale che da lì a poco si sarebbe alzata alta la voce cantilenata, forte e rauca del venditore di brioche. Come un richiamo alla vita di ogni giorno. 

Svelto come un gatto, m’infilavo un maglione e andavo per mano con mamma a comperare due brioche ancora calde per me e Lietta.
