The holidays brought us into another dimension. Our passion for the sun and the sea brought us new adventures every year.

I could never live without a boat. A boat of human proportions, not too long, governable without extra staff!

Sail it, clean it, feel in control of everything that the magic of the sea has to offer!

Then I had one called Arboc, Cobra spelled backwards. A sixteen meters with three small cabins. The accommodations were not spacious but were perfect for making us feel close and united.

Close to my seat I had created a small niche was a small corner for Daniele… he settled there during navigation, looked straight ahead and filled me with questions, he always wanted to know everything.

Sometimes he was so tired he fell asleep and so I rigged up a small bed for him… No anomalous waves could wake him, my little sea wolf!

I was enchanted by Cavallo Island and I bought a mooring for Arboc in a small port that was being built in one of the most beautiful small islands in the Mediterranean.

This island was destined to become a great exclusive club for people who love peace, sea and nature.

It is impossible to describe the beauty of the place. The colour of the water changes with the colour of the sky. A hundred different shades of blue and turquoise with sand that changes aspect and quality in every inlet.

Cavallo island is located between Sardinia and Corsica, exactly at the beginning of the channel that separates one from the other. The strait between them can produce wind so strong that it is often impossible for modest sailing boat to reach the island.

The winds, the turbulence of the sea and the constant motion of the waves have honed to perfection all the rocks that line Cavallo so that from offshore it can look surreal, almost lunar!

404. Non avrei mai potuto vivere senza una barca…

Le vacanze ci portavano in un’altra dimensione: la passione per il sole e il mare ci regalava ogni anno nuove piccole avventure.

Non avrei mai potuto vivere senza una barca. Una barca di proporzioni umane, non troppo lunga, governabile senza personale extra!

Guidarla, pulirla, sentirsi padrone di tutto ciò̀ che la magia del mare ti offre!

Allora ne avevo una che si chiamava Arboc, cioè̀ Cobra all’incontrario. Un sedici metri con tre piccole cabine. Gli spazi non erano esagerati, ma sufficienti a farci sentire stretti e uniti.

Vicino al mio posto di guida avevo creato una piccola nicchia: era la piccola cuccia per Daniele… si sistemava lì durante la navigazione, guardava davanti a sé e mi riempiva di domande, voleva sempre sapere tutto.

A volte la stanchezza aveva il sopravvento su di lui, e con un cuscino gli creavo un piccolo lettino… Nessun’onda anomala riusciva a svegliarlo, il mio lupetto di mare!

Mi ero lasciato sedurre e avevo comprato un posto barca per il mio Arboc in un piccolo porto che stava nascendo in una delle più̀ belle piccole isole del Mediterraneo: “Cavallò”.

Quest’isola avrebbe dovuto diventare un grande club esclusivo per le persone che amano la tranquillità̀, il mare e la natura.

Impossibile descrivere la bellezza di quel posto, dove il colore dell’acqua cambia con il colore del cielo. Cento diverse nuance di blu e di turchese su una sabbia che cambia anch’essa d’aspetto e di qualità̀ a ogni insenatura.

Cavallò si trova fra la Sardegna e la Corsica, esattamente all’inizio del canale che separa l’una dall’altra. In quello stretto regnano venti da forti a fortissimi e quindi è spesso impossibile raggiungere l’isola.

I venti, la turbolenza del mare e il continuo movimento delle onde hanno levigato alla perfezione tutte le rocce che costeggiano Cavallò facendola apparire irreale, quasi lunare!

It’s the 90’s. That was the time when the mono-brand boutiques were born.

I did not have a marketing structure in place at that time. Things worked, but I wasn’t as famous as I had been. Even my lady friends who came to my showroom weren’t showing their usual enthusiasm.

Most of the time they did not buy anything with the excuse that we didn’t have their right size or colour… Maybe I was not cool anymore…

I decided to insist that Eva should begin to work with me. At first I involved her in the print shop, where I needed help, but I realized almost immediately that she would be much better suited to deal with the fashion, an area certainly more in keeping with her beauty and her style.

Then I tried to keep her nearby during the development of the collections, although her shyness sometimes made her feel a little out of her comfort zone…

Her mother tongue, German, finally made me realize that Eve was perhaps more inclined to fit into the commercial side of the business. She began to travel with me to Munich and to Dusseldorf – which was becoming a very important hub for fashion in Germany – where we decided to open a beautiful showroom.

Eva began to travel. She liked it so much and had a real talent for keeping in touch with customers and handling orders coming from the German, Austrian and Swiss markets.

In this way Eva always been known for her beauty, her grace and her style came increasingly to be recognized for her keen fashion sense and business mind.

What can I tell you of these years of happiness as a loving couple, with our beautiful children Rachele and Daniele growing into maturity?

The only problem was that we became so absorbed and passionate about the development of the business that sometimes we feared that we were not devoting enough time to the family.

Everything comes at a price, including success.

403. La nascita delle boutique mono-griffe…

Anni 90, era il momento in cui nascevano le boutique mono-griffe.

Io non avevo ancora una mia vera organizzazione. Le cose funzionavano, ma non ero più̀ sulla cresta dell’onda come prima. Lo capivo anche dalle amiche che venivano nel mio showroom senza però mostrare il solito entusiasmo.

A volte non compravano niente con la scusa che non c’era la taglia o il colore… Forse non ero più̀ cool!

Decisi di insistere affinché́ Eva cominciasse a seguirmi nel lavoro. All’inizio provai a coinvolgerla in stamperia, dove avevo bisogno d’aiuto, ma capii quasi subito che sarebbe stata molto più̀ adatta a occuparsi della parte moda, un ambito senz’altro più̀ consono alla sua bellezza e al suo stile.

Cercai allora di tenermela vicina durante lo studio delle collezioni, anche se la sua timidezza a volte non la faceva sentire all’altezza…

La sua madrelingua, il tedesco, alla fine mi fece capire che Eva forse era più̀ portata a inserirsi nella parte commerciale. Iniziò a viaggiare con me a Munich e a Düsseldorf… e fu proprio in quest’ultima città, che stava diventando un nodo molto importante per la moda in Germania, che decidemmo di aprire un bellissimo showroom.

Eva cominciò a viaggiare. Le piaceva tantissimo occuparsi di comunicazione, le piaceva tenere i contatti con i clienti e gestire gli ordini che arrivavano dai mercati tedesco, austriaco e svizzero.

In quel modo usciva sempre più̀ dai panni della ragazza apprezzata per la sua bellezza, per entrare in un ruolo più̀ importante, che alla fine l’affascinava e la rendeva sempre più̀ affascinante.

Cosa poter dire di dieci anni di felicità di una coppia che si ama, di Rachele e Daniele che diventavano sempre più̀ belli?

L’unico problema era che il lavoro ci assorbiva sempre più tempo e avevamo l’impressione che non ci dedicavamo abbastanza alla famiglia.

Ogni cosa ha un suo prezzo, incluso il successo…

I photographed everything I liked, everything that intrigued me.

Then, when I returned to Florence, I shut myself in my darkroom for hours and hours, developing and printing. I had built a real photo studio in an outbuilding in the garden with all kinds of imaginable equipment.

In my print shop where I was printing on fabrics, I tried to achieve the same effects with the fabrics that I was getting with my photos! It was a game, endlessly fascinating, but a hobby that while it amused me it also offers me an insight into what could be accomplished and help me in the future.

I ended up with a huge photo archive, full of ideas for my future collections.

I slowed down the pace of my work to allow myself more time with my family. We devoted ourselves to our private life, though I never really stopped thinking about the evolution and changes I could make in my companies.

I was slightly falling out of love with my work, but I was not sure what was wrong and what to do. In a way I was glad not to have to submit to the new rules of fashion, they were beginning to make everything too organized, too politicized.

I didn’t like the routine and the new turn of events that was taking over fashion. Industrialized processes were accelerating more and more and this was ruining creativity.

It was as if I refused to be part of the system and want to remain a young, creative designer with freedom without limitations.

The same person who had refused to take the exam at the Academy… I grew up on the street like many young people of my time there and I wanted to go on living! A nomad. A free spirit whose soul was his own despite his successes. A hippy.

402. Fotografavo tutto ciò̀ che mi piaceva…

Fotografavo tutto ciò̀ che mi piaceva, tutto ciò̀ che m’incuriosiva.

Poi, quando tornavo a Firenze, mi chiudevo ore e ore nella camera oscura a sviluppare e a stampare. Avevo costruito un vero e proprio studio fotografico in una dépendance in giardino, provvisto di ogni genere di attrezzatura possibile e immaginabile.

In stamperia, poi, provavo a verificare quali effetti avrei potuto ottenere impressionando i tessuti con i miei reportage fotografici! era un gioco, un hobby che in quel momento mi appassionava e mi divertiva, ma ero abbastanza lontano dall’immaginare che nel giro di poco tempo mi avrebbe aiutato moltissimo.

Mi ritrovai comunque un archivio fotografico enorme, pieno di idee per le mie collezioni.

Avevo un po’ rallentato il ritmo del lavoro, desideravo stare più̀ tempo in famiglia. Facevamo vita ritirata, anche se non smettevo mai di pensare al tipo di evoluzione e di svolta che avrei potuto imprimere alle mie aziende.

Mi stavo leggermente disinnamorando del lavoro, ma non capivo bene cosa non andasse e cosa dovevo fare. In un certo senso ero contento di non dover più̀ sottostare alle nuove leggi della moda, che stavano cominciando a rendere tutto troppo organizzato, tutto troppo omologato.

Detestavo quella routine e la nuova piega che stava prendendo la moda, il cui processo d’industrializzazione accelerava sempre più̀ e stava rovinando la creatività̀.

Era come se mi rifiutassi di far parte del sistema e volessi rimanere il ragazzo d’una volta che faceva solo quello che voleva, desideroso di libertà creativa senza limitazioni!

Lo stesso ragazzo che aveva rifiutato di fare l’esame all’Accademia… ero cresciuto per strada come molti giovani del mio tempo e lì volevo continuare a vivere! Nomade. Il mio spirito e il mio animo, nonostante i successi, sono sempre rimasti quelli di un hippy.
