This year I decided to spend my summer holidays exploring the Mediterranean… again!

The Mediterranean Sea has been an important crossroads for the merchants, traders and travellers of ancient times. It has allowed trade and the cultural exchange of ideas between peoples.

Mediterraneus (Latin) – in the middle of land – the Mediterranean basin unites three continents, Europe, Asia and Africa. The history of the Mediterranean region is crucial to understanding the origins and development of many modern societies.

I love this sea and over the years I have spent most of my summer vacations discovering its treasures…

My children have learned to love the Mediterranean since their childhood when we shared a small boat and an endless series of adventures…

Sailing evokes in me a great feeling of calm, peace, a respect for the elements and an endless inspiration… the encounter with dolphins that accompany us for a short distance… the water, the sun, the colours are muted at sunrise and that become strong and bright during the day and then, again, become soft and misty at sunset when the breeze settles down. It is the way nature is getting ready for the magic of the night when the sky grows dark and the light from the stars guide us across expanses open ocean as they did adventurers of old. How many stars there are in the universe…? The sound of the waves, the view of the stars from the sea without the contamination from the city lights is the best son et lumière show on earth… a show that has been playing every night for millions of years…

These same stars have kept company with the navigators of the past, each one with his own history and each one in search of new lands, new treasures, new cultures and perhaps even a new love…

The vessel in which I prefer to explore the Mediterranean is the Bat-Zodiac, as I call it. It is a zodiac with unique features and propelled by Hydro jets, fast… handy… versatile… essential!

398. Mar Mediterraneo, crocevia importante di popoli e culture…

Anche quest’estate ho deciso di trascorrere le vacanze estive alla scoperta del Mediterraneo…

Il Mare Mediterraneo è stato un crocevia importante per i commercianti e viaggiatori dei tempi antichi. Ha facilitato il commercio e lo scambio culturale tra i popoli.

Mediterraneus (Latino) – in mezzo alle terre – il bacino del mediterraneo unisce tre continenti, Europa Asia e Africa. La storia della regione mediterranea è fondamentale per comprendere le origini e lo sviluppo di molte società moderne.

Adoro questo mare e nel corso degli anni ho passato la maggior parte delle vacanze estive cercando di scoprire i suoi tesori…

I miei figli hanno imparato ad amare il Mediterraneo fin da piccoli quando insieme abbiamo condiviso una piccola barca e una serie interminabile di avventure…

Andare per mare rievoca in me una bellissima sensazione di tranquillità, di pace… un’ispirazione continua… l’incontro con i delfini che ci fanno compagnia per un breve tratto… l’acqua, il sole, i colori che sono tenui allo spuntare del giorno e che diventano forti e accesi durante il giorno per poi diventare di nuovo tenui e velati al tramonto con la brezza che si placa. È la natura che si prepara ad affrontare la magia della notte quando tutto diventa buio con il cielo che si illumina per offrirci ancora una volta uno spettacolo fantastico… ma quante stelle ci sono nell’universo…? Il rumore delle onde e le stelle viste dal mare senza la contaminazione delle luci delle città sono uno degli spettacoli più belli… uno show che si ripete ogni notte da milioni di anni…

Le stesse stelle che hanno fatto compagnia ai navigatori del passato, ognuno con la propria storia e ognuno alla ricerca di nuove terre, nuovi tesori, nuove culture e forse, anche di un nuovo amore…

Il mezzo che preferisco per esplorare il Mediterraneo è il Bat-Gommone, come lo chiamo io, un gommone con caratteristiche uniche e con propulsione a idrogetto, veloce… maneggevole… versatile… essenziale!

Dove avete deciso di trascorrere le vostre vacanze? Dove vi hanno portato i vostri sogni…?

[:en]397. Japanese Fashion in the early eighties…

In the early eighties Japanese fashion imposed itself forcefully.

At first Rei Kawakubo and Yohji Yamamoto arrived. They were greeted by the press as the new fashion prophets. Indeed they were.

They deconstructed and dismantled all the classic forms of clothing, introduced the unfinished, the holes in the t-shirt and everything with a destroyed-look.

Lots of black, gray, brown, blue and a little ‘white and ecru.
It was fashion genius. They were criticized for not valuing the female body enough, for impoverishing the ideal of the woman’s body so that all glamor was taken away.

Yet by playing clever games with volumes and shapes of dresses and by making a few snips here and there they had made a unique fashion.

They had taken away that respectable bourgeois air that had characterized the late seventies and early eighties periods.

They were revolutionaries who greatly influenced fashion at this time.

Still today I judge their art and their fashion as authentic. It was a real understatement and not something done for appearances sake. It was a shock for me, so baroque and colorful, it initially created a lot of confusion in my head.

I admired this turn of events but was not sure which direction to take. The area of Place des Victoires became my headquarters… rue Etienne Marcel. I started hanging out in the neighborhood every time I went to Paris and was a very charmed witness to the transformation that was taking place because of fashion.

It changed everything everywhere. I realized that it was not my moment, even though the eighties would prove to be much more glamorous and luxurious than many other periods.

Perhaps more than an error of choice, mine was a step back in order to savor the pleasure of a strong family life.

In 1983 Eva gave me the wonderful news that she was expecting. I was in seventh heaven! A child from a lady I love and admire so much!

397. La moda Giapponese all’inizio degli anni Ottanta…

All’inizio degli anni Ottanta s’impose prepotentemente la moda giapponese.

Arrivarono per primi Rei Kawakubo e Yohji Yamamoto. Vennero
accolti dalla stampa come i nuovi profeti. In effetti lo erano.

Decostruirono, smontarono tutte le forme classiche dell’abbigliamento, introdussero il non-finito, i buchi nelle t-shirt e tutto il destroyed-look.

Molto nero, grigio, marrone, blu e un po’ di bianco e di écru.
Fu una moda geniale. Li tacciarono di non valorizzare abbastanza il corpo femminile, di far apparire la donna troppo “povera”, di averle tolto tutto il glamour.

Eppure con giochi di volumi, forme e poche sforbiciate avevano reso la moda unica e le avevano tolto quell’aria borghese e perbene che la caratterizzava in quel periodo fine anni settanta inizio anni Ottanta.

Furono rivoluzionari e influenzarono la moda un po’ alla volta.

Ancora oggi giudico autentica la loro arte, perché́ non era fatta per apparire, anzi era un vero e proprio understatement. Fu una folgorazione per me, così barocco e colorato e mi creò molta confusione in testa.

Però ammiravo quella svolta e non sapevo bene che direzione prendere. La zona di Place des Victoires divenne il mio quartier generale… Anzi, rue Etienne Marcel. Cominciai a bazzicare quel quartiere ogni volta che andavo a Parigi e trovavo molto affascinante assistere alla trasformazione che stava subendo per via della moda.

Cambiava tutto ovunque. Capivo che non era più̀ il mio momento, anche se poi gli anni Ottanta si sarebbero rivelati molto più̀ glamorous e lussuosi di tanti altri periodi.

Forse più̀ che un errore di scelta, il mio fu un tirarsi indietro per poter riassaporare il forte piacere della vita di famiglia.

Nel 1983 Eva mi diede la meravigliosa notizia che aspettava un bambino. Ero al settimo cielo! Un bambino da una donna che amavo così tanto!

Art is closely related to the ability to transfer emotions…

Through my drawings, through my Fashion I wish to convey my emotions…. emotions that come from the experience of a lifetime… from my travels around the world… from the people who love me and the people I love… the life of each of us is an artistic journey with a beginning but no end…

I love to look at the many designs you send me… your personalities, your deepest emotions shine through them. Your most frequently asked question is: “How can I become a Fashion Designer?”

Here are my suggestions…
Study the History of Art, make friends with the greatest Artists, of the present and the past. Study not only their works but their lives, the paths they created for themselves as they headed into what for them was the unknown…
As we look back, in retrospect, on the lives of each of them we can see a common thread. As they looked ahead and as we look ahead has anyone been able to predict where that thread will lead…?

To be a fashion designer you need to be prepared to head out into the unknown…

To find yourself, your artistic signature, create and experiment, be daring and always listen to your heart, follow your instincts, your gut… there are different ways of “knowing”…

Look around, learn to observe and understand the secrets of God, his love for colour and the harmony in the shapes of his creations…

Travel, explore, expand your horizons, assimilate different cultures, make new friends, talk to people and listen to their stories… everyone has a story… do you have the wit to learn from it?

Technology is your best friend. Technology will help you become more productive, more creative and help you make better use of your time. Learn to speak the language of the computer and take a programming course. You will learn the logic of programming, the small building blocks of solutions. It will help you face the rapidly changing dynamics of real life problems…

Don’t be afraid to be afraid… a little heart-pounding will remind you that you are still alive…

396. L’Arte di trasferire Emozioni…

L’arte è strettamente connessa alla capacità di trasferire emozioni…

Attraverso i miei disegni, attraverso la mia moda desidero trasferirvi le mie emozioni… emozioni che provengono dalle esperienze di una vita… dai miei viaggi in giro per il mondo… dalle persone che mi amano e dalle persone che amo… la vita di ognuno di noi è un percorso artistico con un inizio ma senza una fine…

Mi piace guardare i molti disegni che mi inviate… le vostre personalità, le vostre emozioni più profonde splendono attraverso i vostri disegni. La vostra domanda più frequente è: “Come posso diventare un designer di moda?”

Questi sono i miei suggerimenti…
Studiate Storia dell’Arte, fate amicizia con i grandi artisti del presente e del passato, studiate non solo le loro opere ma la loro vita, il percorso che si sono creati nel loro viaggio artistico verso l’ignoto… Se ci voltiamo a guardare il passato, in retrospettiva, nelle vite di ognuno di loro riusciamo a scorgere un comune filo conduttore. Mentre loro guardavano al futuro e mentre noi guardiamo verso il futuro riusciamo a immaginare dove questo comune filo conduttore ci porta…?

Per diventare un designer di moda dovete essere preparati a dirigervi verso l’ignoto…

Per trovare in voi stessi la vostra vena artistica, unica fra tutte, create e sperimentate, osate e ascoltate il vostro cuore, seguite il vostro istinto, ci sono tanti modi diversi per scoprire…

Guardatevi intorno, imparate a osservare e a carpire i segreti di Dio, il suo amore per i colori e l’armonia nelle forme delle sue creazioni…

Viaggiate, esplorate, ampliate i vostri orizzonti, assimilate le diverse culture, fate nuove amicizie, parlate con la gente e ascoltate le loro storie… ognuno ha una sua storia… avete lo spirito per ascoltare e imparare?

La tecnologia è la vostra migliore amica. La tecnologia vi aiuterà a diventare più produttivi e a usare in modo migliore il vostro tempo. Imparate a parlare il linguaggio dei computer e fate un corso di programmazione. Imparerete la logica della programmazione, vi aiuterà a risolvere i problemi della vita reale…

Non abbiate paura di aver paura… un po’ di batticuore vi ricorderà che siete vivi…
