Sailing is one of the great adventures that has allowed man, over the centuries, to discover new lands and meet new peoples… I love the sea… I love adventures.

Sailing has allowed me to make friends with the sea, one of the forces of nature. I learned how to ride the waves, to harness their energy, without being overwhelmed… if you know the sea you love it and fear it at the same time. The sea requires love and respect but it rewards you with its precious treasures…

The sea is a special universe, with its colours, refractions and reflections that bind you and alter an ever-changing seascape as though it were a large open-air theatre. A unique show that has been a success for centuries… an inexhaustible source of inspiration.

One of my greatest treasures that I have been able to transfer to my children is my passion for the sea. When they were still young, our little boat was our little paradise. The beginning of August marked the beginning of our summer vacation on the boat.

Sailing around the Mediterranean Sea is an education itself and one that teaches you that what counts is the journey. Tommaso kept me company at the helm and bombarded me with questions, his thirst for knowledge was endless and often he fell asleep listening to my stories…

On board I was Captain, Cook and Deckhand… Tommaso helped me by catching fish, delightfully fresh, that I then cooked… our meals on board taught us to enjoy simple fare. As he grew older so his duties on board also grew.

But time passes, the children grow up…

I celebrated today, with pride, the launch of Tommaso’s new boat. He has now become Captain, inheriting the tasks of transferring his passion for the sea to his children.
Now it is up to him to answer an endless array of questions… to savour the pleasure of spending those precious moments in the company of his beautiful family and the immensity of the sea…

387. Ho trasferito ai miei figli la mia grande passione per il mare…

Navigare è una grande avventura che ha permesso all’uomo, attraverso i secoli, di scoprire nuove terre e nuovi popoli… adoro il mare, adoro le avventure.

Navigare mi ha permesso di fare amicizia con il mare, una delle forze della natura. Ho imparato a cavalcare le onde senza esserne sopraffatto… chi conosce il mare lo ama e lo teme al tempo stesso. Il mare richiede amore e rispetto che ricambia con i suoi preziosi tesori…

Il mare è un universo speciale, con i colori, i riflessi e quelle rifrazioni che alterano il paesaggio circostante come in un grande teatro a cielo aperto. Uno spettacolo unico, un successo che si ripete da secoli… una fonte inesauribile di ispirazione.

Una passione, un grande tesoro che ho trasferito ai miei figli è la passione per il mare. Quando erano ancora bambini, la nostra piccola barca era il nostro piccolo paradiso. L’inizio di Agosto segnava l’inizio delle nostre vacanze estive in barca.

Navigare il Mediterraneo t’insegna molte cose, impari che quello che conta è il viaggio di per sé. Tommaso mi faceva compagnia al timone e mi tempestava di domande, la sua sete di conoscenza era infinita, e spesso, si addormentava ascoltando i miei racconti…

A bordo ero Capitano, Cuoco, Mozzo… Tommaso mi aiutava pescando qualche pesce che io poi cucinavo… i nostri pasti a bordo erano semplici e ci hanno insegnato ad apprezzare le cose semplici.

Ma il tempo passa, i figli crescono…

Oggi ho festeggiato, con orgoglio, il varo della nuova barca di Tommaso che è così diventato Capitano, ereditando il compito di trasferire la sua passione per il mare. Oggi tocca a lui rispondere a una serie infinita di domande… assaporare il piacere di passare quei preziosi momenti spensierati in compagnia della sua bella famiglia e l’immensità del mare…

My first showroom was very small. Just over seventy square meters. I was proud… an important address… Via della Spiga in Milan.

It was there that I decided to present one of my own first fashion shows. I arranged the authorization to close the street for an afternoon to install a long catwalk. Emotion! Emotion! Emotion! Everything was wonderful… a big adrenaline rush!

I then opened my first Press Office in Via del Gesù in Milan. Simple and efficient. It was run by young people full of enthusiasm with faith in me and in my creations. We were trying to convey to journalists from around the world the news about my fashion, my creations, my ideas! It was really good to work and have fun at the same time… believing in what we were doing!

One afternoon a beautiful lady, accompanied by a handsome husband pushing a baby carriage with a beautiful baby, entered my Press Office.

The receptionist explained to the couple it was not the Roberto Cavalli Boutique at that location, but the Press Office. Then, one of the secretaries recognized the two as Cindy Crawford and her husband… she rushed to invite them to see the collection saying that Mr. Cavalli would be happy to meet them…

I spoke to Cindy over the phone and let her know that in a few days I would be in New York and we decided to set a meeting there.

I was thrilled, I had always dreamed of Cindy. I had always seen her as the most beautiful woman in the world! We met in her husband Rande’s bar, right in front of Central Park.

For some reason, when you put someone on a pedestal, you think of that person as unapproachable However, Cindy was very gracious and our meeting proved to be very special. She was the first real star I ever met!

Cindy was my first great friend. We started talking and after a while it seemed we had known one another forever. We met the next day for dinner and a few months later she and her two children were guests in our home in Florence.

Cindy is a beautiful woman and a very special person.

Since then I have met many of the stars in the star system…

Il mio primo showroom era piccolissimo. Poco più̀ di settanta metri quadri. Ne andavo fiero, un indirizzo importante, Via della Spiga a Milano.

Fu proprio lì che decisi di fare uno dei primi défilé́. Chiesi il permesso di chiudere la strada per un pomeriggio per piazzare una lunga passerella. emozione, emozione, emozione! Tutto era utile per aumentare la mia adrenalina!

In un locale di via del Gesù̀ organizzammo il nostro primo ufficio stampa. Semplice, ma efficiente, ragazzi giovanissimi, pieni di entusiasmo e di fiducia in me e nelle mie creazioni cercavano di trasmettere ai giornalisti di tutto il mondo le novità̀ che uscivano dalla mia testa! Era molto bello lavorare e divertirsi nello stesso tempo, credere in ciò̀ che fai!

Un pomeriggio entrò per sbaglio una bellissima signora accompagnata da un bellissimo marito che spingeva una carrozzina con un bellissimo bambino.

La ragazza del centralino fece subito capire alla coppia che non si trattava del negozio di Roberto Cavalli, ma dell’ufficio stampa. Loro fecero dietrofront, ringraziando. Solo all’ultimo momento un’impiegata riconobbe nei due Cindy Crawford e marito… si precipitò a invitarli a vedere la collezione, dicendo che il signor Cavalli sarebbe stato felice di conoscerli…

Le parlai al telefono, pochi giorni dopo sarei stato a New York e decidemmo d’incontrarci là.

Ero emozionato, avevo sempre sognato Cindy. L’avevo sempre vista come la più̀ bella donna del mondo! Ci incontrammo in un bar del marito Rande, davanti a Central Park.

Chissà̀ perché́, quando metti una persona sul piedistallo, la pensi sempre irraggiungibile. Il nostro incontro fu veramente speciale, la prima vera star!

Cindy fu la mia prima grande amica! Cominciammo a parlare e dopo un po’ mi sembrava di conoscerla da sempre. Ci ritrovammo il giorno seguente a cena e dopo qualche mese era mia ospite a Firenze con i suoi due bambini.

Una donna bellissima e una persona speciale.

Dopo di lei ho conosciuto quasi tutte le celebrities di Hollywood e della musica.

I prefer positive, cheerful, straightforward people to the rude, foolish people who don’t know how to live. There are so many of them!

I do not like cocky people, there are so many more! I do not like those who do not have a philosophy of life, or do not have a sense of the mystery that led us here, a thought that we cannot afford to neglect.

I do not care for religious institutions. They have now become a big show of political force!

I tend not to like politics when they are corrupt and guided by a single leader who does not lead for the benefit of all. I don’t care for capitalism as it is so often practised. I don’t like misery or poverty or the reasons they persist.

I dislike the vulgar and the sanctimonious. I adore Gandhi and Che Guevara. I never strike first…

I wish I could solve all the problems of those I love and the troubles of the world with a smile on my face and with the power of the word, which does wonders, when called with true love. Maybe I should look the opposite of what I am. I would certainly be more interesting! More special… but I don’t want to be admired for what I am not. I want to be esteemed for what I can usefully teach, for the example I set, for being able to make you smile while talking of serious matters!

My life has been a real adventure. Life itself is a great adventure! It begins where God places you to take the first step! Everything else you’ll have to build yourself.

I never looked for compromise or begged for help. if you accept them then you inevitably have to pay for them with interests!
When you love, love fully with your heart, with your gut and your brain. Love gives you a great adrenaline rush!

Forgive, if you can… it helps you with closure.

Love… Love… Love… should be your commandment, from the day you are born… and born again! I don’t say “die”, because death doesn’t exist… I believe in a long eternal journey!

Non amo i maleducati, gli sciocchi, gli ignoranti con la laurea. Sono tanti!

Non amo i presuntuosi, sono tantissimi! Non amo chi non ha capito niente della vita, della filosofia del vivere, della ragione o del mistero che ci ha condotto qui, pensiero che non dobbiamo mai permetterci di trascurare.

Non amo le religioni. Ormai sono diventate una grande esibizione di forza politica!

Non amo la politica quando è corrotta e quando è guidata da un solo leader. Non amo il capitalismo, non amo la miseria, non amo le sordide ragioni che la fanno rimanere tale!

Odio la volgarità̀, non amo il perbenismo, adoro Gandhi e Che Guevara. Non colpisco mai per primo…

Vorrei risolvere tutti i problemi di chi amo e i guai del mondo con un sorriso e con la sola forza della parola, che fa miracoli, quando è detta con vero amore! e… forse sono troppo banale! Forse dovrei apparire l’opposto di quello che sono, scambiare in me il bene con il male. Sarei senz’altro più̀ interessante! Più̀ speciale… ma non ci tengo a essere ammirato per quello che non sono. Desidero essere stimato per quello che posso insegnare, per l’esempio che posso dare, per il fatto che so far sorridere parlando di cose serie!

La mia vita è stata una vera avventura, un’avventura senza foreste né animali feroci. La vita può̀ essere di per sé una grande avventura! Dipende da come e da dove Dio ti posiziona per iniziare la prima tappa! Tutto il resto te lo devi costruire da solo con l’aiuto della volontà̀.

Io non ho mai cercato compromessi né mendicato aiuti; se li accetti, poi li devi rendere con gli interessi!

Se ami, ama fino in fondo con il cuore, con lo stomaco e con il cervello: l’amore è un grande aiuto per far bollire l’adrenalina!

Perdona, se riesci… Io non ci sono mai riuscito!
