I opened my first boutique in Saint Tropez in August 1973. My Boutique was a boutique-but-not-a-boutique.

A Boutique unlike any other… with sand on the floor and everybody walking barefoot…

The clothes were hanging or placed on shelves, seemingly at random, although they followed a chromatic order. It was more a Bazaar than a Boutique.

Brigitte Bardot’s visit consecrated the Boutique as the trendy place, it become the place to see and be seen. It was a meeting point…

Young people would meet there before going to sit in the bars along the sea-front from where to watch the yachts and the people strolling by.

Every day I invented something, I had to develop new ideas to attract people. From New York I brought in a container of old scarves of all types and sizes. Putting them together, mixing patterns and colours, I created tops, shirts and especially blouses to wear over the pants.

I cut old jeans, turning them into hot pants, then I inserted my printed leather. It became a style. My style.

Fashion isn’t just seeing things that others can’t see but seeing things that everybody can see and yet seeing them in a new way.

People would go crazy. I worked and earned. More than working and earning, I was having fun! That was the number one reason for me to be in Saint Tropez.

I had a white Ferrari 365 GTC/4 with black roof and in front of my Boutique I moored my little twelve meter boat. It had just a room with a small dining area. More than enough!

It was my pied-a-terre. Very convenient. The Ferrari allowed me to travel from Florence to Saint Tropez every Friday afternoon and spend the entire weekend there. My friends were waiting for me at the port and, before I arrived, they had already organized the evening.

The drive left me feeling refreshed in a party-mood. A Playboy? I don’t think so. I am too romantic to be a “playboy”… for me to say “I love you…” there must be a truth…

In that period in Saint Tropez I met a very sweet and beautiful German girl, Uthe… but that is a story for another time…

Nell’agosto del ’73 inaugurai la mia prima Boutique a Saint Tropez. La mia Boutique era una boutique-non-boutique.

Una Boutique diversa da tutte le altre, per terra c’era la sabbia e tutti entravano a piedi nudi…

I capi erano appesi, oppure posti su mensole quasi a casaccio, anche se obbedivano a un ordine cromatico. era più̀ un bazar che una Boutique.

La visita di Brigitte Bardot consacrò la Boutique a luogo-alla-moda, era diventato il posto-dove-esserci. Diventò il punto d’incontro.

I giovani si davano appuntamento lì prima di andare a sedersi nei vari bar lungo la strada che costeggiava il mare dai quali si potevano ammirare gli yacht e la gente che passeggiava.

Ogni giorno mi inventavo qualcosa, dovevo avere nuove idee per attirare gente. Avevo comprato a New York un container di vecchi foulard di ogni tipo e dimensione, li avevo uniti mescolando fantasie e colori, creando top, camicie e soprattutto casacche da indossare sui pantaloni.

Tagliavo vecchi jeans trasformandoli in hot pants, poi gli inserivo la mia pelle stampata. Diventò uno stile. Il mio stile.

Moda non è solo vedere le cose che gli altri non riescono a vedere, ma è vedere le cose che tutti possono vedere in modo nuovo.

La gente ne andava pazza. Lavoravo e guadagnavo. ma, più̀ che lavorare e guadagnare, mi divertivo! Quella era la ragione numero uno della mia presenza a Saint Tropez.

Avevo una Ferrari Bianca 365 GTC/4 con tettuccio nero. Davanti al mio piccolo negozio tenevo ormeggiata la mia piccola barca di dodici metri. Una camera con piccolo tinello. Più̀ che sufficiente!

Era il mio pied-à-terre. Molto comodo per fiondarmi a Saint Tropez ogni venerdì̀ pomeriggio. Non vedevo l’ora di partire e niente mi poteva fermare. I miei amici mi aspettavano al porto e, prima ancora del mio arrivo, avevano già̀ organizzato la serata.

Io, anche dopo aver guidato ore e ore mi sentivo subito in fresca sintonia con loro. Playboy? Credo proprio di no. Sono troppo romantico per essere un “playboy”, per riuscire a dire “ti amo…” senza un fondo di verità̀…

In quel periodo conobbi a Saint Tropez una ragazza dolcissima e bellissima, Uthe, tedesca, di Stoccarda… ma questa è una storia per un’altra volta…

My fashion is also the result of my passion for experimentation, with colours, with designs, textures and materials.

It’s the end of the ‘60s… ROBERTO CAVALLI Maison is not yet officially born. After the first successes of my prints on fabric I decide to develop an idea I have had in mind for some time… printing on leather!

I wake up and am off to work very early… I attach the soft beige leather, light as silk, onto the printing table and begin to experiment…

I choose a small, attractive, six colour floral design… I use the same dyes with which I normally print on cotton fabrics. This type of dye sticks to the fibres… I cross my fingers, hold my breath… shall I get the same effect on leather?

This is an historic moment in the use of printed leather in fashion! This is the very first leather in the world printed with a coloured fantasy pattern!

Encouraged by the results I begin to print designs and floral patterns on leather with many different colour combinations.

But sales do not immediately follow hand in hand the interest shown in this revolutionary technique.

The printed leather inventory increases visibly, alarmingly. The pressure intensifies to find a solution to sell this growing inventory. I am dreaming of printed leather night after sleepless night!

From a Quilt book I get an idea of how to use my printed leather… I immediately begin to cut the printed leather into squares of four centimetres without taking into account the combination of the designs or the colours. I sew them together to make large PATCHWORK sheets. It is like creating a fabric that can expand or shrink at will.

With this material I begin to produce the new collection, innovatively different from any previous ones.

A younger and far more eccentric collection… more hippy and, as it happens, perfectly timed for that moment in history when the American hippie movement becomes increasingly popular. My idea catches the spirit of the moment!

I show the collection in my showroom in Paris with great success. Finally people begin to appreciate my work and discover my fashion. People begin to talk about me…

383. Siamo alla fine degli anni ’60…

La mia moda è anche frutto della mia passione nello sperimentare, con i colori, con i disegni, con le forme e con i materiali.

Siamo alla fine degli anni ’60… la ROBERTO CAVALLI non è ancora ufficialmente nata. Dopo i primi successi delle stampe su tessuto decido di sviluppare un’idea che avevo in mente da diverso tempo, la stampa su pelle…

Quella mattina mi alzo prestissimo e dopo aver fissato sul tavolo da stampa la morbida pelle beige, leggera come seta, inizio l’esperimento…

Scelgo un disegno floreale. Piccolo, carino, sei colori. Utilizzo i coloranti che normalmente uso per i tessuti di cotone, coloranti che di solito s’incollano alla fibra… incrocio le dita, trattengo il respiro… riuscirò a ottenere lo stesso effetto anche sulla pelle?

È un momento storico per la pelletteria e per il mondo della moda! La prima pelle al mondo stampata con un motivo fantasia, come se fosse un tessuto!

Incoraggiato dai risultati incomincio a stampare su pelle, disegni e fantasie floreali con le combinazioni di colori più disparate.

Ma le vendite non seguono di pari passo l’interesse dimostrato per questa rivoluzionaria tecnica di stampa su pelle.

La quantità di pelle stampata e invenduta aumenta a vista d’occhio. Devo assolutamente trovare una soluzione per ridurre il magazzino. Me la sogno anche di notte!

Da un libro di “Quilt” prendo l’idea su come utilizzare la mia pelle stampata… inizio a tagliare tutta la pelle che avevo stampato in quadratini di quattro centimetri senza prendere in considerazione l’abbinamento del disegno né quello del colore. Li cucio tutti assieme e realizzo dei grandi teli PATCHWORK. È come creare un tessuto che posso ampliare e rimpicciolire a piacere.

Con quel materiale inizio a produrre la nuova collezione, così innovativa e diversa dalle precedenti.

Una collezione più̀ giovane e decisamente più̀ eccentrica… più̀ hippy e, per quel momento storico nel quale il movimento americano dei figli dei fiori prendeva sempre più̀ piede, la mia idea era perfetta.

Presento la collezione nel mio showroom di Parigi con grande successo. Finalmente la gente iniziava ad apprezzare il mio lavoro e a scoprire la mia moda. La gente iniziava a parlare di me…

My first parrot was a colourful blue and yellow one… then I added a second one that was red and yellow and many more over the years.

Parrots are strange birds! They are endowed with great intelligence and they become very attached to the person with whom they live and to the place where they live.

They can become very sweet and take the food gently from your hands or even out of your mouth with their enormous beaks that, in case of necessity, can become strong and sharp.

I love animals and birds and how they become attached to me. I return their affection and I give them lots of attention. Animals understand this mutual affection and, although at first there is a natural fear, with patience you can almost always establish a true bond.

I could have become an animal trainer… I have a love and a propensity for animals that, at times, is close to the one I feel for humans…

Animals are instinctive, natural. We might consider ourselves superior to them but I don’t yet feel we can say we fully understand them. I love their instinct, their own forms of communication, which, in some species may even be superior to our own.

I love their “dresses”, their plumage with those amazing combinations of textures, colours and patterns… always brilliant enough to afford a display or carefully camouflaged enough to provide protection and concealment. While their colours give us joy they serve an evolutionary purpose…

Animals are part of nature which is my source of inspiration… we have to learn from them how to use colours and patterns to make us appealing in the eyes of those we wish to attract and yet how to allow us to appear less conspicuous when that suits our purpose. There is a season for everything…

382. Coloratissimi Pappagalli…

Il mio primo pappagallo era coloratissimo, blu e giallo… se ne aggiunse poi un secondo rosso e giallo e tantissimi altri nel corso degli anni.

Che animali strani i pappagalli! Sono dotati di grande intelligenza e affezionano alla persona con cui vivono e al luogo dove vivono.

Possono diventare dolcissimi fino a prendere il cibo delicatamente dalle tue mani o addirittura dalla tua bocca con quell’enorme becco che, in caso di necessità, può diventare forte e tagliente.

Amo gli animali e il modo in cui si affezionano a me. Ricambio il loro affetto e presto loro molte attenzioni. Gli animali lo capiscono, e anche se all’inizio c’è un naturale timore, con la pazienza si arriva quasi sempre a instaurare una vera amicizia.

Avrei potuto fare il domatore o l’addestratore… ho un amore e una propensione per gli animali che, a volte, si avvicina a quella che ho per gli umani…

Gli animali sono istintivi, naturali. Noi magari tendiamo a considerarci superiori a loro ma io penso che forse a volte non siamo in grado di comprenderli completamente. Amo il loro istinto, i loro modi di comunicare che in alcuni animali arrivano ad essere più sofisticati dei nostri.

Amo i loro “vestiti”, le loro piume con quelle combinazioni incredibili di disegni e colori… sempre così brillanti per mettersi in mostra o per confondersi nell’ambiente che li circonda. I loro colori ci trasmettono allegria, gioia di vivere…

Gli animali sono parte della natura che è la mia fonte di ispirazione… dobbiamo imparare da loro come usare e accostare i colori, come renderci interessanti agli occhi della persona che vogliamo conquistare…
