226. I do not refer to myself as a Stylist or a Designer … I prefer to call myself an Artist…

An artist who transforms… I love to transform simple fabrics and materials into precious pieces of art… to realize dream dresses… I love to dress the woman of my dreams and enhance her natural beauty…

My thoughts fly to the period of my youth, when my mother turned the studio of my grandfather, Giuseppe Rossi, located in Via degli Artisti in Florence into an atelier where she, along with my sister, began to create dresses of their own collection called MALI. MALI was an acronym formed from the initials of the names of my mother Marcella and my sister Lietta.

There were two large tables at which my sister Lietta, together with some of her classmates from the Art Institute of Florence, painted large and colorful abstract flowers on fabrics… Lietta was very good at decorating textiles by hand… she was attending the weaving with hand painting course.

Mom was finally realizing her own dreams… creating beautiful dresses… giving vent to her artistic talents… using the patterns as a base and changing the cut according to the inspiration of the moment…

I was amused to see my mother paint the fabric… the inspiration and the strength of her style were special… you could see the influence of my grandfather, a painter of the Florentine School of the Macchiaioli – which anticipated the French Impressionists. She was transforming simple white fabrics into exhibition paintings… then into dresses women were proud to wear…

After several attempts experimenting with different schools, with different levels of success, I decided to follow in the footsteps of Lietta and joined the Art Institute of Florence. The school was located in the former royal stables at the foot of Piazzale Michelangelo, in the Porta Romana district. There, among other things, I learned the importance of knowing your art history. I chose a specialization course for textile applications of painting. I was fascinated by the creative possibilities, the experimentation and the innovation of it all turning plain fabrics turned into precious works of art…

After the course at the Art Institute I made a series of flower prints on knit that I managed to get produced by leading Italian knitwear factories… my first success…

226. Non mi sento uno Stilista o un Designer… preferisco definirmi un Artista…

Un artista trasformista… amo trasformare semplici tessuti in preziose opere d’arte… e realizzare con queste opere d’arte abiti da sogno… vestire la donna dei miei sogni esaltandone la naturale bellezza…

Il mio pensiero vola al periodo della mia giovinezza, a quando mia madre trasformò lo studio del nonno, Giuseppe Rossi, in via degli Artisti a Firenze in un atelier dove venivano creati gli abiti della collezione MALI, acronimo formato dalle iniziali dei nomi di mia madre Marcella e di mia sorella Lietta.

Mi ricordo due grandi tavoli dove mia sorella Lietta e alcune sue compagne di scuola, l’Istituto Statale d’Arte di Firenze, dipingevano grandi e colorati fiori astratti sui tessuti… Lietta era bravissima a decorare i tessuti a mano, aveva infatti scelto il corso di tessitura con pittura a mano.

La mamma aveva finalmente realizzato il suo sogno… creare abiti speciali dando sfogo al suo estro artistico… usava i cartamodelli come base e ne modificava il taglio secondo l’ispirazione del momento…

Mi divertiva veder la mamma dipingere i suoi tessuti… l’estro e la forza del suo stile erano speciali… si notava la scuola del nonno, pittore della corrente fiorentina dei Macchiaioli che ha anticipato il movimento degli impressionisti francesi. Trasformava I semplici tessuti bianchi in quadri da esposizione…

Dopo alcuni tentativi scolastici con risultati diversi ho deciso di seguire le orme di Lietta e mi sono iscritto all’Istituto Statale d’Arte di Firenze. La scuola era situata nelle ex scuderie reali ai piedi del Piazzale Michelangelo, nella zona di Porta Romana, dove, tra le altre cose, ho imparato l’importanza della storia dell’arte. Ho scelto un corso di specializzazione per le applicazioni tessili della pittura… mi affascinava vedere semplici tessuti trasformarsi in preziose opere d’arte… creare, sperimentare, innovare…

Terminato il corso all’Istituto d’Arte ho realizzato una serie di stampe floreali su maglia che ho fatto produrre collaborando con i principali maglifici italiani… il mio primo successo…

Questo è stato il mio inizio…
