I began my life as a designer on tiptoes. I feared everything that could expose me… an excessive shyness… uncertainty.

I approached interviews with an incredible fear… the first few seconds my voice was hoarse, it seemed as though my voice didn’t want to come out… after two minutes, a little better… then after, I wanted the interview to never end!

Often, to break the ice, my first words were “I’M VERY THRILLED… I’M ACCUSTOMED TO TALKING THROUGH MY CLOTHES…” After this beginning, everything flowed more easily.

I’ve changed so much, perhaps too much. Why too much? Because fear means emotion. I have gained great confidence so that today I feel less emotionally involved in the interview process. I preferred myself at the beginning, with the fear of the unknown!

I exaggerate about everything… as my uncertainty was excessive in the past, now my confidence is in excess!

I like to amuse and to show, to be creative and to improvise…

Before an appearance on a TV Show or before an important interview I should prepare the answers to the previously established questions… but that never happens!

I always want to be spontaneous and an eventual small mistake can sometimes look nice!

181. incominciai la mia Vita di Designer in Punta di Piedi…

Incominciai la mia vita di designer in punta di piedi. Temevo tutto ciò che poteva mettermi in mostra… una timidezza e una incertezza eccessive.

Affrontavo le interviste con un timore incredibile… i primi secondi, la voce era rauca, sembrava non volesse uscire… dopo due minuti, un po’ meglio… dopo, avrei voluto non finire mai!

Spesso, le mie prime parole per rompere il ghiaccio erano “SONO EMOZIONATO… SONO ABITUATO A PARLARE ATTRAVERSO I MIEI ABITI…” dopo questo inizio, tutto scorreva più facilmente.

Sono cambiato tanto, forse troppo. Perché troppo? Perché il timore significa emozione. La sicurezza, la grande confidenza che oggi ho acquisito mi rendono emozionalmente meno coinvolto nelle interviste. Mi preferivo prima, con il timore dell’ignoto!

Esagero sempre in tutto, così com’era eccessiva la mia incertezza, adesso la mia sicurezza è all’eccesso!

Mi diverte stupire e apparire, essere creativo e improvvisare…

Prima di una trasmissione televisiva, di un’importante intervista, dovrei prepararmi le risposte alle domande in precedenza stabilite… ma questo non succede mai!

Desidero sempre essere spontaneo e un eventuale piccolo errore talvolta può apparire simpatico!

180. January 2007… Jennifer Hudson… The Red Carpet…

January 2007… Jennifer Hudson’s stylist, Jessica Paster, contacts us. I’m particularly pleased because it was the belief of all that Jennifer that year would win an Oscar.

I leave for Los Angeles with the best guys on my team. We begin to create the dress on Jennifer’s body. She is extremely happy to receive so much attention, even more so when we showed her the dress… “WONDERFUL!”

The day before the Oscars André Leon Talley, Anna Wintour’s colleague, approached Jennifer and asked her to wear an Oscar de la Renta dress on the red carpet. She then would have the cover of the next month’s Vogue…

Jennifer could not refuse. A request by Vogue America could not be overlooked. She would be the first black actress on the cover of Vogue!

André Leon Talley interviewed her on the red carpet and, of course, the most important question was the name of the designer of her dress…

She had been required to wear a long brown dress with a small silver bolero jacket… she just wanted to run to change the dress before the ceremony…

She received an Oscar wearing the beautiful dress that we had created for her.

The clothes worn by the stars are judged, commented on and every magazine expresses its own judgment… the consensus was that the worst dress on the “red carpet” was the one worn by Jennifer Hudson!

I saw Jennifer cry, she wanted to start the fabulous evening with that dress that we made for her…!

Se wanted to tell… to scream… this was not the dress that she had chosen, but she preferred to remain silent…

I saw Jennifer Hudson at a wonderful dinner for the amfAR in New York. She was invited to my table with her handsome husband David Otunga. We remembered our adventure of few years earlier… with a smile!

180. Gennaio 2007… Jennifer Hudson… The Red Carpet…

Gennaio 2007, ci contatta Jessica Paster, la stylist di Jennifer Hudson. Sono particolarmente contento poiché era convinzione di tutti che Jennifer avrebbe vinto l’Oscar.

Parto per Los Angeles con I migliori ragazzi del mio team. Cominciamo a creare il vestito sul corpo di Jennifer, lei era estremamente soddisfatta di tanta attenzione, ancora di più quando gli abbiamo mostrato l’abito… ”MERAVIGLIOSO!”

Il giorno prima degli Oscar, Jennifer fu avvicinata da André Leon Talley, collega di Anna Wintour, che le propose di indossare sul red carpet un abito di Oscar de la Renta. Avrebbe avuto la copertina di Vogue del mese successivo…

Jennifer non poteva non accettare. Una richiesta da Vogue America non poteva essere trascurata, nessuna diva di colore aveva mai avuto la copertina di Vogue e lei sarebbe stata la prima!

Venne intervistata dallo stesso André Leon Talley all’inizio del red carpet, naturalmente, la domanda importante era sul nome del designer del suo vestito…

Era stata costretta ad indossare un abito lungo marrone con un piccola giacca bolero di colore argento… desiderava solo correre a cambiarsi prima della cerimonia.

Ricevette l’Oscar indossando il bellissimo abito che avevamo creato per lei.

Gli abiti indossati dalle star sono giudicati, commentati e ogni giornale esprime il proprio giudizio… il peggiore abito sul “red carpet” fu giudicato quello di Jennifer Hudson!

Ho visto Jennifer piangere, avrebbe voluto iniziare la favolosa serata con l’abito che avevamo creato per lei…!

Avrebbe voluto raccontare… urlare, che quello non era l’abito che lei aveva scelto, ma ha preferito tacere…

Ho rivisto Jennifer Hudson a una meravigliosa cena dell’amfAR a New York, era invitata al mio tavolo con il bellissimo marito David Otunga. Abbiamo ricordato la nostra avventura di qualche anno prima… sorridendo!

Mariacarla Boscono, the only Italian model who has emerged in recent years. Beautiful and intelligent with a personality that is almost overwhelming.

For great simpatico we had become friends, but I could never convince myself to have her in my fashion show. During the casting or for one reason or another she was not chosen!

Rome, Piazza di Spagna (Spanish Steps), fashion show on national TV, steps of Trinita dei Monti, RAI (Italian TV) provided the models and Mariacarla was in the group. I was happy to see her again and to have her wearing my fashion!

The fashion show began, Cindy Crawford was also in the show with a beautiful striped dress.

Mariacarla’s turn arrived… beautiful… with a perfect dress and makeup. The steps of Piazza di Spagna are long… she slips at the fourth step and falls further… but, she triumphs and stands to the encouraging applause of the public!

When she returns backstage she melts into tears, I could say nothing to comfort her… she wanted to make a good impression in her first fashion show for Cavalli!

A few weeks later I had to submit a cast of models to the photographer Mario Testino for the new advertising campaign and I slipped in a photo of Mariacarla with the photos of the other models because of the feeling she transmitted to me!

Of all the photos of the models proposed Testino chose Mariacarla! I was happy for her and I approved his choice.

The shooting was beautiful… the advertising campaign wonderful… Mariacarla outstanding!

I’ve always been proud to have slightly contributed to her success!

178. Mariacarla Boscono, l’unica modella italiana che si è affermata negli ultimi anni…

Mariacarla Boscono, l’unica modella italiana che si è affermata negli ultimi anni. Bella e intelligente con una personalità quasi esagerata.

Per la grande simpatia ci ero diventato amico, ma non riuscivo mai a convincermi a farla sfilare, durante i casting o per una ragione o un’altra veniva sempre scartata!

Roma, Piazza di Spagna, sfilata in televisione, scalinata di Trinità dei Monti, le modelle erano state messe a disposizione dalla Rai e Mariacarla era nel gruppo. Fui felice di rivederla e avere con lei la mia prima esperienza moda!

Inizia la sfilata, nello stesso show avevo anche Cindy Crawford che sfilava con un meraviglioso abito tigrato.

Arriva il momento di Mariacarla, bellissima con abito e trucco perfetto. La gradinata di piazza di Spagna è lunga… scivola al quarto gradino e rotola per altri sette… si rialza tra gli applausi del pubblico nel tentativo di farla riprendere dall’emozione!

Quando ritorna nel backstage si scioglie in un gran pianto, non riuscivo a frenarla… ci teneva a fare bella figura nella sua prima sfilata per Cavalli!

Dopo alcune settimane dovevo far scegliere al fotografo Mario Testino la modella per la nuova campagna pubblicitaria e fra le foto delle modelle selezionate inserii la foto di Mariacarla per la simpatia che mi aveva trasmesso!

Fra tutte le foto delle modelle proposte Testino scelse Mariacarla! Ero felice per lei e approvai la scelta di Mario.

Lo shooting fu bellissimo… la campagna meravigliosa… Mariacarla eccezionale!

Sono sempre stato fiero di aver leggermente contribuito al suo successo!
