271. I am excessive in all I do. My Fashion reflects my way of thinking about life…

“…a double page with a portrait of Eva and me made by Annie Leibovitz in American Vogue, the advertising campaigns made by Mario Testino and a cover of Vogue Italy were the final consecration. To all intents and purposes we entered into the elite of Fashion. And who knows how hard it is to get to the top, also knows how difficult it is to stay on top.

Florence honored me with a Fashion Show in the hall of the Cinquecento in Palazzo Vecchio and the exhibition “More and more and more” curated by Italo Rota… architect, artist, a wizard with the enthusiasm of a child. For him, everything is Game, everything is Color. I’ve always looked at him as the alter ego of myself. A great friendship was born and with him I have been able to realize the most absurd, the most crazy projects. The Just Cavalli store in Milan in Via della Spiga was the most surreal you could imagine. It was a boutique, but also a restaurant with aquariums in place of walls and a lift in the form of a pumpkin. Animal prints everywhere. He and I continued in a thousand projects that culminated in a boutique on the Faubourg Saint -Honoré in Paris. A five-story building. Between fairy tale and dream. Without limitation to imagination and creativity.

My name was getting stronger and the collections were worshipped by the press, buyers and famous people. Whether for the red carpet or for the Golden Globes, or any other important event, my gowns were requested and worn by celebrities. I became a friend of celebrities like Sharon Stone, Lenny Kravitz, Jennifer Lopez. I spent the holidays with them in New York and Los Angeles and in my home in Florence.

The dresses of the Cavalli woman were loved, bought and worn. She was a distinctive woman. She could not be confused with any other. Striped jeans, printed dresses, fur coats and long dresses with rich embroidery, decorated and “molto nudi”. It was the opposite of the boring and minimalist woman who, only a few years before, had tried to undermine my place at the top. My woman had fun with color, shapes… and why not, with the way she showed herself. Yes, she was something of an exhibitionist, but at the same time she was svelte and sophisticated. Never commonplace. I opened boutiques in the major cities around the world and in the best corners of American department stores. I became a star.

I often stop and think about this second life and the magic that surrounded me. It gave me a lot of satisfaction, a reward for years of toil, redemption of a life spent running in quest of the new, the different, the unexplored. Fashion, horses, travel, photography and love! How many times I was lost in one of these adventures and with what enthusiasm! At times there was only that particular discovery… horserace or love. I was excessive in all. I am excessive in all. My style reflects my way of thinking about life. All out, no half measures. At risk of blowing up everything every time. I love the risk. Perhaps that is also why I love the sea. An imposing force, ungovernable. A friend and a fierce enemy. My life, the life I really love, however, is not on a big boat, but on a zodiac, looking for small creeks and in total freedom.

I love Fashion, I never want to make it angry nor appear ungrateful by anything I may say.. Sometimes I seek solace in solitude, because it makes me feel happy not to have to smile for compromise or, for convenience, not to have say things that I do not think. I am still that boy going with his homemade lantern to celebrate the Rificolona, or coming down a road full of holes and stones with his rickety cart. I still have the same desires. Create, invent and just sit and think.

But fashion is like a mistress who demands attention and care. It should not be left alone for a second. We must nurture new ideas, unexpected and whimsical. Everybody expects from Roberto Cavalli all the richness, the power of a concept, the expression of a sensual woman. You can not afford to disappoint anyone. And you think a thousand times how to evolve your style, how to make it become more and more desirable and attractive.”

271. Sono eccessivo in tutto. La mia moda rispecchia il mio modo di concepire la vita…

“…una doppia pagina con un ritratto di Eva e me realizzato da Annie Leibovitz su “Vogue America”, le campagne pubblicitarie fatte da Mario Testino e una copertina su “Vogue Italia” furono la consacrazione definitiva. Eravamo entrati a tutti gli effetti nel Gotha della moda. E chi sa quanto sia difficile arrivare alla vetta, sa anche quanto arduo sia riuscire a restarci.

Firenze mi onorò con una sfilata nella sala dei Cinquecento a Palazzo Vecchio e con la mostra “More and more and more” curata da Italo Rota. Un architetto, artista, geniaccio con l’entusiasmo d’un bambino. Per lui tutto è gioco e colore, e io l’ho sempre guardato come l’alter ego di me stesso. Nacque una grande amicizia, e con lui realizzai i progetti più pazzeschi, più assurdi. Il negozio Just Cavalli in via della Spiga a Milano era quanto di più surreale si potesse immaginare. Era un negozio, ma anche un ristorante, con acquari al posto delle pareti e un ascensore a forma di zucca. E poi stampe animalier ovunque. Io e lui continuammo in mille progetti che culminarono nel grande negozio in Faubourg Saint-Honoré a Parigi. un palazzo di cinque piani. Tra fiaba e sogno. Senza limitazioni alla fantasia e alla creatività.

Il mio nome andava sempre più forte e le collezioni erano adorate dalla stampa, dai compratori e dai grandi personaggi. Per i red carpet o per i Golden Globe, o per qualsiasi altro evento importante, i miei vestiti erano richiesti e indossati dalle celebrities. e così diventai amico di gran- di personaggi come Sharon Stone, Lenny Kravitz, Jennifer Lopez. Passavo le vacanze con loro sia a Los Angeles sia a New York sia nella mia casa di Firenze.

La donna Cavalli era a tutti gli effetti amata, comperata e indossata. Era un tipo preciso di donna che non si poteva confondere con nessun’altra. Jeans tigrati, abiti stampati, pellicce con ricami e lunghi vestiti ricchi, decorati e molto nudi. Era l’opposto della donna noiosa e minimalista che solo un paio d’anni prima aveva cercato di scalzarmi dal mio posto. La mia donna si divertiva con il colore, con le forme, e perché no, con l’esibirsi. Sì: era una donna esibizionista, ma nello stesso tempo ricercata. Mai volgare. Aprii negozi nelle più grandi città del mondo e corner nei migliori grandi magazzini americani. Divenni una star.

Mi fermo spesso a pensare a questa seconda vita e alla magia che mi circondava e che mi dava tante soddisfazioni, ricompensandomi di anni di fatiche, riscatto d’una vita passata di corsa all’insegna del nuovo, del diverso, dell’inesplorato. Moda, cavalli, viaggi, fotografia e amore! Quante volte mi ero perso in una di queste avventure, e con che entusiasmo! In certi momenti esisteva solo quella scoperta, quella corsa, o quell’amore. Ero eccessivo in tutto. Sono eccessivo in tutto. e la mia moda rispecchia il mio modo di concepire la vita. Presa frontalmente, senza mezze misure. Con il rischio ogni volta di far saltare tutto per aria. Amo il rischio, e forse anche per questo amo il mare. Una forza imponente, ingovernabile. un amico e un nemico feroce. La mia vita, quella che amo veramente, non è però su una grande barca, ma su un gommone, alla ricerca di piccole insenature e in libertà totale.

Amo la moda, non la voglio far arrabbiare e quindi le sono riconoscente, ma a volte cerco conforto nella solitudine, perché mi fa sentire felice non dover sorridere per compromesso o dire cose che non penso per convenienza. Sono ancora quel ragazzo che andava con la sua lanternina fatta in casa con le carte veline colorate alla Rificolona, o che scendeva con un carretto sgangherato giù per una strada tutta buche e sassi. Ho ancora gli stessi desideri. Creare, inventare e starmene solo a pensare.

Ma la moda è come un’amante che pretende attenzioni e cure. Non va lasciata sola un secondo. Bisogna nutrirla di idee nuove, inaspettate e stravaganti. Da Roberto Cavalli poi si aspettano tutti la ricchezza, la forza di un concetto, un’espressione di donna sensuale. Non puoi permetterti di deludere nessuno. E pensi mille volte a come evolvere la tua moda, a come farla diventare sempre più desiderabile e attraente.”
