87. That Special Dinner…

Monday was Daniele’s birthday. Surely something has gone awry, we wanted to celebrate his birthday, but his mood was not the best. He preferred to spend the evening in his small apartment listening to his favorite music…
I understand him. It is not because another year has passed. I have had a similar feeling all my life!

Yesterday afternoon, Daniele called me to invite me out for dinner. Just the two of us – a tete-a-tete between father and son! How nice! It made me happy, the invitation was more of a gift for me than for him! He booked the best restaurant in Florence, probably the best in Italy – the Enoteca Pinchiorri! Daniele had never been there before and he wanted me to share the excitement of this experience with him!

I have known Giorgio Pinchiorri since I was a young playboy and Giorgio was the sommelier at a well known Florentine restaurant, Buca Lapi. Later, Giorgio and his wife started this adventure in good food and fine dining. From the very beginning the Enoteca Pinchiorri has proven to be a gourmet restaurant. They soon realized their dream of acquiring forks in the Michelin Guide. I have followed their success with pleasure. A story of love and passion for good food. From time to time I have encountered them in restaurants around the world, in constant pursuit of new flavors, seeking to unravel the secrets of other cuisines, which they could transfer into their own unique dishes with characteristic love and expertise.

It has been many years since I first visited the Enoteca Pinchiorri. The warmth of Giorgio’s greeting sent me on a trip down memory lane. It was in this restaurant that I had a dinner with Eva for the very first time.

A corner table guarding our privacy! Nouvelle Cuisine! The real one… the right one… that special one… fifteen, twenty small dishes with fine artwork. Unique dishes, created by those who love cooking so much that it has become their mission in life. A cuisine that has its roots in Art. The same Art that you can “breathe” on every corner in Florence!

Each dish was accompanied by a perfect wine. Two white… a young red Tuscan… a red Chateau Lafite Rothschild 1986… incredible wines! I cannot describe the delight and the quality of the desserts, I would make your mouth water.

Enoteca Pinchiorri

After dinner, Giorgio Pinchiorri accompanied us on a tour of the wine cellar. It could be called the Wine Museum, a masterpiece! Managed by a sophisticated system of temperature and humidity control which is crucial to preserve this wonderful heritage of nature!

An unforgettable evening. Daniele was wonderful. He listened to the confidences I shared with him about my past. I liked seeing the curiosity in his eyes!

87. Che Cena Speciale…

Lunedi era il compleanno di Daniele. Sicuramente qualcosa è andato di traverso, avremmo voluto festeggiarlo, ma il suo mood non era dei migliori. Ha preferito trascorrere la serata nel suo piccolo appartamento ad ascoltare la sua musica preferita…
Quanto lo capisco. Non è l’anno che passa, questa sensazione mi ha accompagnato per tutta la vita!

Ieri pomeriggio, Daniele mi ha chiamato per invitarmi a cena. Soltanto noi due, un tete-a-tete tra padre e figlio! Che bello! Mi ha reso felicissimo, questo invito è stato più un regalo per me che per lui! Ha prenotato il miglior ristorante di Firenze, probabilmente il migliore in Italia, l’Enoteca Pinchiorri! Daniele non c’era mai stato e desiderava provare questa emozione con me!

Conosco Giorgio Pinchiorri da quando ero un giovane playboy fiorentino e Giorgio era il sommelier in un noto ristorante fiorentino, Buca Lapi. In seguito, Giorgio e la moglie hanno iniziato l’avventura della buona cucina. Fin dall’inizio l’Enoteca Pinchiorri ha dimostrato di essere un ristorante speciale. Il loro sogno di acquisire forchette sulla guida Michelin si è presto avverato. Ho seguito con piacere il loro successo. Una storia di amore e passione per la buona cucina. Li ho talvolta incontrati in qualche ristorante in giro per il mondo nella costante ricerca di nuovi sapori, a carpire i segreti delle altre cucine e trasferirli in piatti unici con esperienza e amore.

Erano molti anni che non tornavo all’Enoteca Pinchiorri. L’accoglienza di Giorgio mi ha fatto fare un tuffo nel passato. In questo ristorante sono stato a cena con Eva per la prima volta.

Un tavolino d’angolo custodiva la nostra privacy! Nouvelle Cuisine! Quella vera… quella giusta… quella speciale… quindici, venti piccoli assaggi con decorazioni artistiche. Piatti unici, creati da chi ama la cucina tanto da farne la propria missione. Una cucina che trova le sue radici nell’arte. Quella stessa arte che a Firenze si “respira” a ogni angolo!

Ogni portata era accompagnata da vini appropriati. Due bianchi… un rosso toscano giovane… un rosso Chateau Lafite Rothschild dell’86… vini incredibili! Non posso descrivervi la delizia e la qualità dei dolci, vi farei venire l’acquolina in bocca.

Enoteca Pinchiorri

Dopo cena, Giorgio Pinchiorri ci ha accompagnato a visitare la “cantina”. La chiamerei il Museo del Vino, un capolavoro! Gestita da un raffinato sistema per il controllo di temperatura e umidità, fondamentale per conservare questo meraviglioso patrimonio della natura!

Una serata indimenticabile. Daniele è stato stupendo, ha ascoltato le confidenze sul mio passato. Mi piaceva vedere la curiosità nei suoi occhi!

Spero di avervi fatto trascorrere una serata piacevole in nostra compagnia!

86. I Won, Finally!

I Won, Finally! Finally I had fun…

The truth is that I enjoy the game even when I lose. Some of you like to play? You play for the excitement of waiting for your magic ten minutes. You must have the patience to wait. Do not push until there is negativity around you.

When I play, I become superstitious. So many little things bother me… I try not to look around, I don’t want to be recognized! Two nights ago… at the Black Jack table… the person next to me has begun to talk about his daughter who is studying fashion in Rome… very good! She would be happy to work for me… I wish her all the best… I move to another table!

Last night… I ask for a private table… all mine… I get two glasses of red wine and I ask my companion to get closer to me so as to increase the strength and the positivity. The beginning is not so exciting… the pile of chips is getting smaller and smaller… I play around with the chips to create a feeling between the game and me… I keep my eyes vigilantly on the cards… I count the cards… I follow the game as fast as ever.

Finally… a Black Jack… then another! My situation instantly reverses itself… I start to force the game… I start feel it… believe in it… the pile of chips is getting bigger and bigger. For good luck I do not want to count them… I squeeze the hand of my companion…

I drink the second glass of red wine…
Damn… this game is weird… that’s why I like it… It’s certainly not for the money, nor for any gains you can make, it’s just the sheer pleasure… the thrill that you get.

I don’t lose a hand… even when I should … all the luck is on my side… I miss a beat… then another… maybe now is the time to stop…!

I thank the croupier and leave him a big tip.

Finalmente Ho Vinto! Finalmente mi sono divertito…

La verità è che mi diverto anche quando perdo. A qualcuno di voi piace giocare? Giocare è l’emozione di aspettare i tuoi magici dieci minuti, devi avere la pazienza di aspettare, non forzare fino a quando intorno a te c’è negatività.

Quando gioco, divento superstizioso. Tante piccole cose mi disturbano… Cerco di non guardarmi intorno, vorrei non essere riconosciuto! Due sere fa, al tavolo di Black Jack, il mio vicino di gioco incomincia a parlarmi della figlia che studia moda a Roma, bravissima! Sarebbe felice di lavorare per me… gli faccio tanti auguri, e cambio tavolo!

Ieri sera ho richiesto di giocare ad un tavolo tutto mio! Due bicchieri di vino rosso… ho chiesto alla mia compagna di stringersi a me per aumentare la forza, la positività. L’inizio non è molto eccitante, il mucchietto di fiches sta calando, mi ci balocco per creare un feeling fra me e il gioco. Non perdo d’occhio le carte, le conto e seguo il gioco con la velocità di sempre.

Finalmente… un Black Jack… poi un altro. La situazione improvvisamente si capovolge. Incomincio a forzare, inizio a crederci! Le fiches aumentano. Per scaramanzia non le voglio contare… stringo la mano della mia compagna…

Finisco in un attimo il secondo bicchiere di vino rosso.
Cazzo, il gioco è strano, ed è per questo che mi piace. Non è certamente per i soldi, per gli eventuali guadagni, è solo il piacere dell’emozione che riesce a darti.

Non perdo una mano, neanche quando dovrei… La fortuna è tutta dalla mia parte! Perdo un colpo, e poi un altro… forse è giunto il momento di smettere…!

Ringrazio e lascio una bella mancia al croupier.

85. I feel like a grandfather telling a story to his grandchildren, “the story of my life.”

My life, past, present and future really looks like a novel, an unreal story… but true! I do not remember if I told you that I’m writing “the adventure of my life”, the story of my seventy years. This adventure begins with a great tragedy, one that will change my life, but I don’t want to tell you about this just now. I promised to make you smile and have fun.

Do you know that I have five children? Four days ago was Cristiana’s birthday “my first big thrill”. Today is Daniele’s birthday. He is my second son. I believe that today he is twenty-six…

I use to call him “The handsome one”. He is the tallest, with long hair and an irresistible charm! I wanted to call him Roberto, but due to an old fascist law in Italy it was not possible to name a child after his parent! As a result we decided to call him Daniele Roberto.

None of my children was a genius at school. Even for Daniele the time in school was very complicated and difficult. My work commitments and my success did not allow me to be very close and spend as much time with him as I would have wished, like a classic good dad. I tried to make up for this lack by cramming a lot into the time we did spend together and this calmed my conscience.

Daniele, since a young age, has always had many friends, many girls and a lot of music! He is a good musician who can play different instruments, but the guitar is his best friend! When he plays, l look at him with smiling eyes. He reminds me of my childhood… freedom… escapism… and music… Sometimes, I am afraid I have to admit, I am a little jealous. I feel as though I am reliving my youth vicariously through him!

For two years now Daniele has been in charge of the Cavalli Uomo [Cavalli Man] collection. I want to tell you that he is very good, although sometimes he seems a bit stubborn. I wish to offer him the benefit of all my experience, but sometimes it is hard. Even in this he is very much like me – he wants to have his own satisfaction and does not intend to share it with anyone!

85. Mi sembra di essere un nonno che racconta una novella ai suoi nipotini “la novella della mia vita.”

La mia vita, passata, presente e futura sembra veramente una novella, una storia irreale… ma vera! Non mi ricordo, se vi ho già detto che sto scrivendo “l’avventura della mia vita” la storia dei miei settanta anni. Un’avventura iniziata con una grande tragedia, di quelle che ti sconvolgono la vita, ma non voglio continuare, vi ho promesso di farvi sorridere e divertire.

Lo sapete che ho cinque figli? Quattro giorni fa è stato il compleanno di Cristiana “la mia prima grande emozione”. Oggi è il compleanno di Daniele, il mio secondo figlio maschio, si dice cosi? Credo che oggi siano ventisei…

“Il bello di casa”, l’ho sempre chiamato così. È il più alto, capelli lunghi e un fascino irresistibile! Avrei desiderato chiamarlo Roberto, ma a causa di una vecchia legge fascista, in Italia non è possibile dare ai figli il nome dei genitori! Abbiamo quindi deciso di chiamarlo Daniele Roberto.

Nessuno dei miei figli è stato un genio a scuola, anche per Daniele il periodo scolastico è stato molto complicato e difficile. I miei impegni di lavoro e il mio successo non mi hanno permesso di potergli stare molto vicino e passare con lui il tempo che avrei voluto, come un classico buon papà. Cercavo di sopperire a questa mia mancanza con un’educazione concentrata e questo calmava la mia coscienza.

Daniele, fin da giovanissimo ha avuto tantissimi amici, tante ragazze e soprattutto tantissima musica! È un bravo musicista in grado di suonare diversi strumenti, ma la chitarra è la sua amica del cuore! Quando suona, lo guardo con il sorriso negli occhi, mi ricorda la mia infanzia… evasione… libertà… musica… Talvolta temo di esserne un po’ geloso, mi sembra di rivivere in lui la mia giovinezza!

Da due anni Daniele è responsabile della collezione Cavalli Uomo. Vi confido che è bravissimo, anche se talvolta è un po’ testardo. Vorrei offrirgli tutta la mia esperienza, ma a volte mi è difficile. Anche in questo è molto simile a me, desidera avere le sue soddisfazioni e non intende dividerle con nessuno!
