Reluctantly I left Sweden… many work commitments forced me to return to Florence.

The temperature in Sweden was perfect, 68 degrees with a nice breeze while here it is definitely a hot summer… a typical Florentine Summer! 95 degrees during the day and 68 at night!

But the one who suffers the heat wave the most these days is Lupo… he is always looking for a fresh corner where he can enjoy a “pennichella” (a quick nap)…

The ancient stone pavements are hot and store heat that they release overnight in a cycle that seems impossible to stop…

The seaside is about one hundred kilometres from Florence so
Florentines refresh themselves along the banks of the Arno River taking with them their deck chairs and umbrellas in an attempt to imitate the Paris-Plages…

Tourists also suffer these temperatures and seem more interested in the ice cream parlours than the treasures of the Renaissance…

But tourism in Florence this days is unfortunately hasty tourism… the average time spent on a visit to Florence is one day! Despite having always lived in Florence all my life I still discover every day new fantastic places… Florence has inspired many of my creations… Florence is a city that you cannot visit in one day!

Centuries of history, art and culture require more attention… if you decide to visit Florence let me know. We can meet for a cocktail at Caffè Giacosa, next to my boutique in Via Tornabuoni, and I will recommend some itineraries that will help you to discover the secrets of Florence, like the beautiful Vasari Corridor which connects Palazzo Pitti with Palazzo Vecchio through the Uffizi Gallery. The Medici used it to go from their home to the office…

But now I have to go, my Buontalenti is starting to melt… Buontalenti is the exclusive Florentine ice cream named after its inventor, the architect and artist Bernardo Buontalenti who invented Ice Cream in the fifteenth century at the request of Cosimo de’ Medici…

389. Estate fiorentina…

A malincuore ho lasciato la Svezia… i numerosi impegni di lavoro mi hanno costretto a rientrare a Firenze.

La temperatura in Svezia era ideale, 20 gradi con una piacevole brezza mentre qui il clima è decisamente estivo… una tipica estate fiorentina! 35 gradi di giorno e 20 di notte!

Ma chi soffre molto il caldo in questi giorni è Lupo… sempre in cerca di un angolino fresco, dove concedersi una “pennichella”…

Gli antichi marciapiedi in pietra sono roventi e immagazzinano calore che rilasciano durante la notte in un ciclo che sembra impossibile da interrompere…

Firenze dista circa cento kilometri dal mare e i fiorentini si rinfrescano lungo l’Arno con sedie a sdraio e ombrelloni nel tentativo di imitare le Paris-Plages…

Anche i turisti subiscono queste temperature e sembrano più interessati alle gelaterie che ai tesori dell’arte rinascimentale…

Ma oggi il turismo a Firenze è purtroppo un turismo frettoloso… la maggior parte visita Firenze in un giorno! Pensate che malgrado abbia vissuto da sempre a Firenze tutta la mia vita ancora oggi scopro posti fantastici… Firenze ha ispirato molte delle mie creazioni… Firenze è una città che non si può visitare in un solo giorno!

Secoli di storia, di arte e di cultura richiedono una maggiore attenzione… se decidete di visitare Firenze fatemelo sapere, ci troviamo per un aperitivo al Caffè Giacosa, di fianco alla mia boutique di via Tornabuoni, e vi consiglierò alcuni itinerari per scoprire i segreti di Firenze, come il bellissimo Corridoio Vasariano che collega Palazzo Pitti con Palazzo Vecchio attraverso la Galleria degli Uffizi. I Medici lo usavano per spostarsi da casa all’ufficio…

Ma ora vi devo lasciare il mio Buontalenti sta iniziando a sciogliersi… Buontalenti è l’esclusivo gelato fiorentino che prende il nome dal suo inventore, l’architetto e artista Bernardo Buontalenti che nel quindicesimo secolo inventò il gelato su richiesta di Cosimo de’ Medici…

I decided to deepen my knowledge of this ancient country and learn a little more Swedish…

The origins of the Swedish people go back to the Stone Age and beyond. Their relationship with nature comes from a well-established friendship over the centuries.

I really like the respect the Swedes have for nature. Here they created the first European national park way back in 1909. Nature is grateful and repays them with rich vegetation and a rich and abundant Sea.

The climate is pleasant thanks to the warming influences of the Gulf Stream. Although Sweden is very close to the Arctic Circle, the average temperatures are well above what you would expect at this latitude.

At this time of year the days here are long… eighteen hours of daylight with the sun rising at 3:30am and setting at 10:30pm…The light here is different from that you find in the Mediterranean and so you are introduced to a different palette of colours.

What I admire about Sweden is its economic liberalism… the quest for justice… socialism… democracy… environmental consciousness… social equality and their neutrality in international disputes…

Here I fell in love with one of its many fantastic islands… a piece of heaven… the perfect place for a relaxing time…

I rediscovered the pleasure of fishing… surrounded by beautiful nature… almost surreal silence broken only by the rustling of leaves caressed by the breeze or the sounds of a mysterious animal, out of sight, that communicates with his fellows…

Fishing has the power to stop the course of time… the seconds become minutes and minute hours… how many thoughts go through my mind… how many ideas… inspiration grows inside me…

I wish to have you all here… near me… everyone gathered in its own thoughts… all together… a meditative moment…

388. Svezia, una moderna e antichissima terra…

Ho deciso di approfondire la mia conoscenza di quest’antichissimo paese e migliorare la mia conoscenza dello svedese…

Le origini del popolo svedese risalgono all’età della pietra. Il loro rapporto con la natura nasce da un profondo legame instaurato nel corso dei secoli.

Mi piace molto il rispetto che gli svedesi hanno per la natura. Qui fu creato il primo parco nazionale europeo nel lontano 1909. La natura ne è riconoscente e li ricompensa con una folta vegetazione e un mare ricco e pescoso.

La temperatura è piacevolmente mite grazie al Gulf Stream. Malgrado la Svezia sia molto vicina al circolo polare artico, le temperature medie sono ben al di sopra di quelle che ci si aspetterebbe a questa latitudine.

In questo periodo dell’anno qui le giornate sono lunghissime con ben diciotto ore di luce con il sole che sorge alle 3:30 e tramonta alle 22:30… La luce qui è diverso da quello si trova nel Mediterraneo, ci si trova di fronte a una diversa tavolozza di colori.

Della Svezia ammiro il liberalismo economico… la ricerca di giustizia del socialismo… la democrazia… la coscienza ambientale… l’uguaglianza sociale e la neutralità in ambito internazionale…

Qui ho scoperto un’isola fantastica di cui mi sono innamorato… un angolo di paradiso… il luogo ideale per un completo relax…

Ho riscoperto il piacere di pescare… circondato da una natura incontaminata… in un silenzio quasi surreale interrotto soltanto dal fruscio delle foglie accarezzate dalla brezza o da qualche misterioso animale che comunica con i suoi simili…

La pesca ha il potere di fermare il tempo, i secondi diventano minuti e i minuti ore… quanti pensieri attraversano la mia mente… quante idee… l’ispirazione nasce anche così…

Vorrei avervi tutti qui… vicino a me… ognuno raccolto nei propri pensieri… tutti insieme in una grande pausa… un momento meditativo…

Sailing is one of the great adventures that has allowed man, over the centuries, to discover new lands and meet new peoples… I love the sea… I love adventures.

Sailing has allowed me to make friends with the sea, one of the forces of nature. I learned how to ride the waves, to harness their energy, without being overwhelmed… if you know the sea you love it and fear it at the same time. The sea requires love and respect but it rewards you with its precious treasures…

The sea is a special universe, with its colours, refractions and reflections that bind you and alter an ever-changing seascape as though it were a large open-air theatre. A unique show that has been a success for centuries… an inexhaustible source of inspiration.

One of my greatest treasures that I have been able to transfer to my children is my passion for the sea. When they were still young, our little boat was our little paradise. The beginning of August marked the beginning of our summer vacation on the boat.

Sailing around the Mediterranean Sea is an education itself and one that teaches you that what counts is the journey. Tommaso kept me company at the helm and bombarded me with questions, his thirst for knowledge was endless and often he fell asleep listening to my stories…

On board I was Captain, Cook and Deckhand… Tommaso helped me by catching fish, delightfully fresh, that I then cooked… our meals on board taught us to enjoy simple fare. As he grew older so his duties on board also grew.

But time passes, the children grow up…

I celebrated today, with pride, the launch of Tommaso’s new boat. He has now become Captain, inheriting the tasks of transferring his passion for the sea to his children.
Now it is up to him to answer an endless array of questions… to savour the pleasure of spending those precious moments in the company of his beautiful family and the immensity of the sea…

387. Ho trasferito ai miei figli la mia grande passione per il mare…

Navigare è una grande avventura che ha permesso all’uomo, attraverso i secoli, di scoprire nuove terre e nuovi popoli… adoro il mare, adoro le avventure.

Navigare mi ha permesso di fare amicizia con il mare, una delle forze della natura. Ho imparato a cavalcare le onde senza esserne sopraffatto… chi conosce il mare lo ama e lo teme al tempo stesso. Il mare richiede amore e rispetto che ricambia con i suoi preziosi tesori…

Il mare è un universo speciale, con i colori, i riflessi e quelle rifrazioni che alterano il paesaggio circostante come in un grande teatro a cielo aperto. Uno spettacolo unico, un successo che si ripete da secoli… una fonte inesauribile di ispirazione.

Una passione, un grande tesoro che ho trasferito ai miei figli è la passione per il mare. Quando erano ancora bambini, la nostra piccola barca era il nostro piccolo paradiso. L’inizio di Agosto segnava l’inizio delle nostre vacanze estive in barca.

Navigare il Mediterraneo t’insegna molte cose, impari che quello che conta è il viaggio di per sé. Tommaso mi faceva compagnia al timone e mi tempestava di domande, la sua sete di conoscenza era infinita, e spesso, si addormentava ascoltando i miei racconti…

A bordo ero Capitano, Cuoco, Mozzo… Tommaso mi aiutava pescando qualche pesce che io poi cucinavo… i nostri pasti a bordo erano semplici e ci hanno insegnato ad apprezzare le cose semplici.

Ma il tempo passa, i figli crescono…

Oggi ho festeggiato, con orgoglio, il varo della nuova barca di Tommaso che è così diventato Capitano, ereditando il compito di trasferire la sua passione per il mare. Oggi tocca a lui rispondere a una serie infinita di domande… assaporare il piacere di passare quei preziosi momenti spensierati in compagnia della sua bella famiglia e l’immensità del mare…
