After the success of 1971 my fashion begins to travel around the world… these are important years, years of great changes.

We are in the early ’80s… technology begins to make its way. The winds in your face are the winds of change. Orders are now received via Fax and the first Personal Computers begin to change our lives.

Ten years of great success, now everyone knows my name and every Fashion Show is a new success. People respond to the Cavalli Style and this is reflected in the press.

I continue to experiment and innovate, not only with shapes and colours, but especially with fabrics.

I started printing on denim. The challenge was to find jeans that were both comfortable and at the same time perfectly adherent.

By its nature denim tends to expand when worn and shrink with every wash… I decided to find a solution and so I created a new denim using classic cotton mixed with Lycra. This way the jeans become elastic and always fit the figure perfectly!

I then hand printed the denim with my drawings and treated the jeans with sandpaper to give them that ”lived-in-look”…

A success! Since then, the stretch denim has become the fabric of choice for women’s jeans…

By the mid-90s fashion is undergoing yet another major transformation… it becomes darker, more sad, minimalist… the designers propose a style that does not like colours and the shapes become androgynous, monotone, hiding, obscuring the form of the female body…

I wanted to change this trend. Fashion is something different… it is colour, Joie de Vivre, experimentation, audacity, communication. Fashion is a celebration of femininity, because every woman wants to communicate with the world around her and find expression in ways that includes clothing, accessories, colours, designs, shapes, textures, fabrics…

I decided then to create a collection completely opposed to the general trend… a collection full of colours, imaginative, provocative, sexy…

This collection was greeted with a great outburst of joy!

395. La Moda è Colore, Joie de Vivre, Sperimentazione, Audacia, Comunicazione…

Dopo il grande successo del 1971 la mia moda inizia a girare il mondo… sono anni importanti, anni di grandi trasformazioni.

Siamo agli inizi degli anni ’80, la tecnologia inizia a farsi strada.
Gli ordini arrivano via Fax e i primi Personal Computer iniziano a cambiare le nostre vite.

Sono stati dieci anni di grandi successi, oggi tutti conoscono il mio nome e ogni sfilata è un successo. Lo Stile Cavalli riceve un grande consenso e la stampa ne riflette il successo.

Ma continuo a sperimentare e innovare, non solo con le forme e i colori, ma soprattutto con i materiali.

Ho iniziato a stampare anche su tessuto Jeans. La sfida era quella di trovare jeans che fossero comodi da indossare e al tempo stesso perfettamente aderenti.

Per sua natura il tessuto jeans tende ad allargarsi quando lo si indossa e a restringersi ad ogni lavaggio… decido allora di creare un nuovo tessuto jeans utilizzando la Lycra insieme al classico cotone. In questo modo i jeans diventano elasticizzati e si adattano sempre in modo perfetto alla figura!

Stampo a mano i miei disegni e attribuisco ai jeans quel look “vissuto” con la carta vetrata…

Un successo! Da allora il jeans elasticizzato è diventa il tessuto utilizzato per i jeans femminili…

A metà degli anni ’90 la moda si trasforma, diventa triste, buia, minimalistica… gli stilisti propongono uno stile che non predilige il colore e le forme diventano androgine, monotone, nascondendo, offuscando le forme del corpo femminile…

Voglio cambiare questa tendenza. La moda è un qualcosa di diverso… è colore, Joie de Vivre, sperimentazione, audacia, comunicazione. La moda è la celebrazione della femminilità, perché ogni donna vuole comunicare con il mondo che la circonda anche attraverso gli abiti, gli accessori, i colori, i disegni, le forme, i tessuti…

Decido allora di creare una collezione completamente controtendenza… una collezione piena di colori, fantasiosa, provocante, sexy…

Una collezione che è stata accolta con un’esplosione di gioia!

How can you not take a cue from an Artist like God…? Just look around and discover the greatness of Creation in even the smallest things around us… so perfect… shapes and colors joined in such a perfect harmony…

My creative process began when, as young man, I decided to enroll in the School of Art, in Florence. The artistic bent was already in my family. My grandfather, Giuseppe Rossi, was an artist of the Macchiaioli school. His paintings are exhibited in the Uffizi Gallery in Florence.

My career has been an adventure… a great adventure full of great achievements and some difficult times.

I was very young when I started to paint on fabrics creating shirts and pullovers. I worked twenty hours a day in a small rented garage…

How many dreams… how many hopes… how many difficulties…
Then the first orders came…

I decided to experiment with leather, but it was too hard as a material for clothes so then I decided to use that very fine and soft leather used for gloves.

When I showed my first works in printed leather to Hermes, which was already my client for printed fabrics, they were thrilled. They invited me to visit them in Paris. They wanted exclusivity.

That’s when I decide that I will become a fashion designer. I want to create beautiful clothes to enhance the beauty of women. I want every woman to be able to feel admired… courted… beloved…

It’s the end of the 60s… I am drawing my first collection and presenting it in Paris. Journalists are captivated by my fashion but orders are modest.

The first big success came a few years later, in 1971, at the fashion show at the Sala Bianca of the Palazzo Pitti in Florence. The journalists and buyers love my patchwork leathers and finally the orders arrive.

My passion for art and admiration for God, the greatest artist, let me begin and continue to make my way in the fashion world and be welcome there.

I continue my creative path, experimenting, inventing new ways and methods for the creation of what will become the Cavalli Style…

394. Come si fa a non prendere spunto da un Artista come Dio…?

Come si fa a non prendere spunto da un Artista come Dio…? Basta guardarsi in torno e scoprire la grandezza del creato nelle piccole cose che ci circondano… così perfette… forme e colori uniti da un’armonia così perfetta…

Il mio percorso creativo inizia da giovane quando decido di iscrivermi alla Scuola D’Arte di Firenze. La vena artistica era già nella mia famiglia. Mio nonno, Giuseppe Rossi, è stato un artista della corrente dei Macchiaioli, i suoi quadri sono esposti nella galleria degli Uffizi a Firenze.

La mia carriera artistica è stata un’avventura… una grande avventura piena di grandi soddisfazioni ma anche di momenti difficili.

Ero giovanissimo quando iniziai a dipingere sui tessuti creando magliette e pullover. Lavoravo venti ore al giorno in un piccolo garage preso in affitto…

Quanti sogni… quante speranze… quante difficoltà…
Poi arrivano i primi ordini…

Decido di sperimentare con la pelle, ma era un materiale troppo duro per creare abiti e decido quindi di usare quella pelle finissima e morbidissima utilizzata per i guanti.

Quando mostro le mie prime realizzazioni in pelle stampata a Hermes, che è già mio cliente per le maglie, ne sono entusiasti. Mi invitano a Parigi. Vogliono l’esclusiva.

Quello è il momento in cui decido che sarei diventato uno stilista. Voglio creare abiti meravigliosi per esaltare la bellezza delle donne. Voglio che ogni donna sia in grado di sentirsi ammirata… corteggiata… amata…

È la fine degli anni 60… disegno la mia prima collezione e la presento a Parigi. I giornalisti sono entusiasti della mia moda ma gli ordini sono modesti.

Il primo grande successo arriva un paio d’anni dopo, nel 1971, alla sfilata nella Sala Bianca di Palazzo Pitti a Firenze. Il mio patchwork di pelle riscuote il consenso di giornalisti e buyers e finalmente arrivano gli ordini.

La mia passione per l’arte e l’ammirazione per Dio, il più grande Artista, mi permettono di farmi strada nel mondo della moda…

Continuo il mio percorso creativo, sperimentando, inventando nuovi modi e metodi per la creazione di quella moda che diventerà lo Stile Cavalli…

We are in the early seventies, the world has discovered my fashion. I am flooded with orders and busy at work for the new collections…

The phone rings, the receptionist announces that Mrs Ponti is on the line.

Destiny… usually I never answer calls from people I don’t know, but this time I decide to take the call.
I cannot believe It, it’s Sofia Loren! With her sweet and sexy voice she tells me that she has heard so much about me and my fashion that, in addition to her desire to wear my dresses, she would be very pleased to meet me.

I seem to dream. Yet an uncontrollable shyness, mixed with a kind of personal reserve, stops me. I feel as though I have been punched in the stomach… I have lost my voice.

I consider myself a worker of fashion, certainly not a stylist. At that time fashion designers were not superstars.

I like to create, to invent, but I recognize myself more as a crazy inventor than a fashion designer. More phone calls follow and I have the pleasure of talking with her, but I cannot assure her that I will go to meet her. I’m looking for silly reasons, stupid excuses to let her know that I cannot.

I don’t feel up to it. Maybe I am, but that’s not my world. I love the simple things. Why am I like this? Maybe that stammer that for so many years affected me physically had also affected me psychologically?

Or am I fascinated with her to the point of not wanting to touch the dream for fear this bubble will burst?

She is on a pedestal and I cannot get there. In the end I do not go! I send the dresses to her but I could not find the courage to go there personally.

Am I wrong? Certainly, I will regret it in the next ten years. I made a mistake, certainly, because again – because of my character – I denied myself the opportunity to learn not only from a great woman, but a true legend, an icon of cinema.

I will meet her several times many years later, but I never find the courage to mention that episode of my early shyness.

I wonder how many would have liked to be in my position at that
time. Few would have given up such an opportunity…

393. Quella volta che non incontrai Sofia Loren…

Siamo agli inizi degli anni settanta, il mondo scopre la mia moda. Sono sommerso dagli ordini e dal lavoro per le nuove collezioni…

Squilla il telefono, mi annunciano una certa signora Ponti.

Una fatalità̀, in genere non rispondo mai alle chiamate di persone che non conosco, ma questa volta decido di rispondere.

Non posso crederci. È Sofia Loren! Con quella sua voce sexy e dolce insieme mi dice che aveva sentito parlare tanto di me e che, oltre al desiderio d’indossare una mia giacca, le avrebbe fatto molto piacere conoscermi.

Mi sembra di sognare. Eppure un’irrefrenabile timidezza, mista a una forma di riservatezza, mi blocca. Sento come un colpo allo stomaco e la voce mi sparisce.

Io mi considero un operaio della moda, non certo uno stilista. Tra l’altro sono ancora lontani i tempi in cui i designer di moda diventeranno dei divi.

A me piace creare, inventare, ma mi riconosco più̀ nella figura dell’inventore pazzo che in quella del creatore di moda. Ci sentiamo di nuovo, scambio altre due parole con lei, ma non le assicuro che sarei andato a trovarla. Sto cercando sciocche ragioni, stupide scuse per farle capire che non mi è possibile.

Non mi sento all’altezza o forse lo sono, ma quel mondo non è il mio. Amo le cose semplici. Perché́ sono così? Forse quel balbettare che per tanti anni mi ha condizionato fisicamente mi aveva anche messo dei freni psicologici?

Oppure sono affascinato a tal punto da non voler toccare il sogno con mano per paura di rovinarlo?

Lei è su un piedistallo e io non posso arrivarci. Alla fine non ci vado! Le faccio avere i capi ma non trovo il coraggio di andarci personalmente.

Sbaglio? Di certo, me ne pentirò nei dieci anni successivi. Ho commesso un errore, sicuramente, perché́ ancora una volta – a causa del mio carattere – mi sono precluso la possibilità̀ di conoscere non solo un grande personaggio, ma un vero mito, un’icona del cinema.

La incontrerò varie volte, molti anni dopo, ma non ho mai trovato il coraggio di tornare su quell’episodio.

Chissà̀ quanti avrebbero voluto essere al mio posto in quel momento. Pochi avrebbero rinunciato a una simile occasione…
