53. I Spent all Day in the Office…

Roberto Cavalli 53. I spent all day in the office after a long absence away from it I enjoyed the warmth of my staff at seeing me again… their affection… eyes sometimes speak louder than words!

Tough day in the style office… Just Cavalli… men’s collection… just a visual inspection. In the coming days I will have to investigate and check that the Cavalli style is well represented in each item for each line that bears my name!

I try to leave a bit earlier than usual… a first spring sunshine, sweet as the scent of almond blossoms, warms Florence. It accentuates the colors of this city in a way that does not feel real… it looks like a work of an impressionist painter…

I’m driving my little Smart car that spots the same color used for my boat and helicopter – a color that changes according to the reflections of the sun! From fuchsia to turquoise to a dark blue!

I am driving on the Lungarni, the road that runs alongside the Arno River, which flows through Florence. To my left the fascinating historic buildings seem to flow past me, to my right the Piazzale Michelangelo, the most famous observation view point in Florence!

Parking next to my shop… a corner in the middle of Via Tornabuoni… the heart of fashion… the most beautiful boutiques in Florence! Inside my boutique I host a small bar, the Caffé Giacosa, a club with a big name, one associated with the history of Florence from the late nineteenth century.
The famous Negroni cocktail was created at the Caffé Giacosa in the late twenties. The Caffè Giacosa is the best patisserie in town. For several years has been an integral part of my shop and fits my fashion perfectly!

I sit at one of its few sidewalk tables. My son Daniele is enjoying the last rays of sun while enjoying an aperitif with friends. He comes over to hug me with love …

I look at the Palazzo Strozzi that gradually hides in the shadows of the night … Florence, what a special city… I have breathed this art and culture since I was born …

It would take 10,000 articles on the blog to describe Florence… I have tried to convey my love and some small sensations…

Roberto Cavalli 53. Ho passato tutto il giorno in ufficio, mancavo da molto tempo e mi piace sentire il calore dei miei collaboratori… percepire il loro affetto… il piacere di rivedermi… gli occhi parlano talvolta più delle parole!

Giornata dura! Ufficio stile di Cavalli… Just Cavalli… collezione uomo… Solo un’occhiata generale. Nei prossimi giorni dovrò approfondire e controllare che lo stile Cavalli sia ben presente in ogni capo per ogni linea che porta il mio nome!

Cerco di uscire un po’ prima del solito… un primo sole primaverile, dolce come il profumo dei mandorli in fiore, riscalda Firenze, accentuando i colori di questa città che non sembra reale… appare come una opera di un pittore macchiaiolo…

Sto guidando la mia piccola Smart, che sfoggia il colore usato anche per la mia barca e per l’elicottero. Un colore che cambia in base ai riflessi del sole! Dal fuxia al turchese fino a un blu notte!

Sono sul Lungarno, la strada che affianca l’Arno, il fiume che attraversa Firenze. Alla mia sinistra scorrono gli affascinanti palazzi storici, alla mia destra il Piazzale Michelangelo, il più famoso punto di osservazione di Firenze!

Parcheggio vicino al mio negozio… un angolo alla metà di via Tornabuoni… il cuore della moda… le più belle boutique di Firenze! All’interno della mia boutique ospito un piccolo bar, il Caffè Giacosa, un locale con un nome importante che ha fatto la storia di Firenze da fine dell’ottocento.
Il famoso Cocktail Negroni fu creato al Caffè Giacosa verso la fine degli anni venti. Il Caffè Giacosa è anche la migliore pasticceria della città. Da alcuni anni fa parte del mio negozio e si unisce perfettamente alla mia moda!

Mi siedo in uno dei pochi tavoli che si trovano lungo il marciapiede, mio figlio Daniele si sta godendo gli ultimi raggi di sole gustando un aperitivo in compagnia alcuni amici. Si alza… mi abbraccia con tanto amore…

Guardo palazzo Strozzi che poco a poco si nasconde nella penombra della sera… Firenze, che città speciale… ne ho respirato l’arte e la cultura da quando ci sono nato…

Ci vorrebbero 10000 articoli sul Blog per descrivervi Firenze… ho cercato di trasmettervi il mio amore e alcune piccole sensazioni…

52. I have been away from Florence far too long!

Late morning… appointments finished… off to the airport… my I-OETE helicopter… right to my home.

In 1980, when I bought the helicopter and got my pilot’s license, I arranged proper maintenance to reduce problems and risks!
A helicopter is not something you can take chances with. My life is almost more important to others than it is to me, so I do not take risks at the expense of those in need of my presence.
A hangar to protect it from cold and rain, a fuel pump with JET A1 aviation fuel, a fully qualified mechanic to check it carefully before and after each flight and a helipad with a big “H” on it that can be seen from the air.

My house is located to the south of Florence on a hill overlooking the city – perfect for a landing. I remember the early days. I was cautious, trying not to disturb my neighbors. The helicopter is noisy, relatively unknown and scary!

The core of my house is a 15th century lookout tower built of Tuscan stone.
From it you would have had early warning of strangers or enemies approaching the city.

Over the centuries farmers with their households and animals cultivated olive trees and vineyards. For every child born or cow giving birth an additional room was attached, with no particular style, to the walls of the tower. For these reason Tuscan farmhouses possess a special charm, the very forms their buildings take make your thoughts surf…!

Upon my arrival, my animals are the first to hear and cheer, the parrots scream with joy to see me. Many years ago I had a big red parrot that came down from his perch to meet me.

Mac, my Macaque monkey, begins to jump up and down in his large cage, very happy to see me. Now he will enjoy a little free run. I often take him with me through the fields. He is happy and doesn’t show me his temper as he often does with the others.

Home at last… throw myself on my bed… immediately recognize the scent and the softness of my pillow. My old cat, Pussy, comes upstairs to greet me, rubbing, purring…

I close my eyes… My fatigue is spoiled by my happiness to be home …

52. Manco da Firenze da troppo tempo!

Alla fine della mattinata, dopo gli ultimi appuntamenti in ufficio, vado in aeroporto e con il mio elicottero I-OETE arrivo direttamente a casa.

Nel 1980, quando comprai l’elicottero e subito dopo il brevetto di pilota, mi organizzai per poterlo gestire senza problemi e rischi!
Non è un mezzo da trascurare, la mia vita è importante quasi più per gli altri che per me, quindi non posso correre rischi a scapito di chi ha bisogno della mia presenza.
Un hangar per proteggerlo dal freddo e dalla pioggia, una pompa di carburante JET A1 avio, un meccanico qualificato che me lo controlla minuziosamente prima e dopo ogni volo ed una piazzola di atterraggio dove spicca una grande “H” ben visibile dall’alto.

La mia casa si trova a sud di Firenze su una collina che domina la città – perfetta per l’atterraggio. Mi ricordo i primi giorni. Ero prudente, cercavo di non disturbare i miei vicini. L’elicottero è un mezzo rumoroso e semisconosciuto ed incute timore!

Il nucleo centrale della casa è la torre in pietra toscana che risale sicuramente al 15esimo secolo. Una torre di vedetta per gli stranieri o i nemici che si avvicinavano alle porte della città.

Nei secoli a venire, i contadini che la abitavano con famiglie e animali coltivavano principalmente olivi e vigne. Per ogni figlio che nasceva o per una vacca che partoriva, le stanze aumentavano, attaccate senza stile alle mura della torre. Per questa ragione, le case coloniche toscane possiedono un fascino particolare, le forme delle loro costruzioni ti fanno navigare con il pensiero…!

Al mio arrivo, i miei animali sono i primi a sentirmi e ad acclamarmi, i pappagalli urlano dalla gioia di vedermi. Molti anni fa, avevo un grande pappagallo rosso che scendeva dal suo trespolo per venirmi incontro.

Mac, la mia scimmia Macaco, incomincia a saltare nella sua grande gabbia, felicissimo di vedermi. Finalmente sarà un po’ libero, lo porto spesso con me attraverso i campi. Lui è felice e non mi dimostra il suo brutto carattere come invece fa spesso con gli altri.

Finalmente a casa… mi getto sul mio letto e riconosco subito il profumo e la morbidezza dei miei cuscini. Pussy, la mia vecchia gatta, sale subito a salutarmi, si strofina mugolando…

Socchiudo gli occhi… la mia stanchezza è coccolata dalla mia felicità di essere a casa…

Un bacino, e… presto vi farò visitare Firenze… con le mie parole!

51. Tonight I’ll stay home!

I need to relax. Does that seem strange!?
I am sure that many of you have asked yourself the same question.
All my life it has been like this… I don’t like to get bored… Sometimes resting makes me bored, but I should relax, I feel that my body needs it – maybe even my mind!

I love to sleep. I try never to commit myself for early morning meetings. I like to wake up, get up and call Lupo onto my bed for a few seconds, the time for him to wash my face with his kisses!

Tonight I’ll be comfortable in your company…!
What can I make for dinner? I think I have a good sea bass in the fridge. I bought it yesterday from Claudio, the best fish shop in Milan. I will cook it “al sale” with some new potatoes… Am I making your mouth water? I invite you, all of you, to dinner at my house to show you that I am not kidding!

I sit at the computer, well, a professional computer with two giant screens and two professional photo printers. One of the printers is for the normal size A4 and A3, while the other is a plotter for larger sizes.

I’m not very good with computers, but I manage! I don’t want to be too technical and lose my spontaneity when I create the designs to be printed on my fabrics!

To describe my house… large studio apartment… freedom that I can do whatever I want… meters of books and magazines stacked high everywhere… two large white leather sofas with lots of pillows… zebra… giraffe… leopard!

In the center, between two columns, an ancient Persian horse, half of the ‘700, I bought it from an antique shop several years ago.
Six floor to ceiling windows give the house a lot of light and overlook a main road and a beautiful park, a favorite of Lupo!

It ‘s time to talk about a beautiful portrait that Julian Schnabel made of me in New York 6 or 7 years ago. Schnabel is one of the greatest modern painters of our time, for me he is number one. I don’t claim to be in the best position to critique modern painting. As a native Florentine I am bound to a sense of true art so my tastes have not yet gone much beyond Picasso!

Roberto Cavalli Milano I went to his studio… utterly fascinating… located in West Village… one of the most beautiful and artistic in New York… I was invited by Shnabel, my great friend… when he told me he wanted to paint my portrait I felt incredibly honored!
Schnabel did not use a traditional canvas for my portrait but instead chose a large panel to which he glued many porcelain plates some whole, some fragmented.
On this, a work of modern art in itself, he painted this magnificent portrait!

I entered the studio and when I saw this great frame with lots of white plates cemented over, I was shocked. I never imagined the result…
I smiled to myself when Julian asked me if I wanted a straight face or smiling.
I know modern art and so I was very sceptical about likenesses!
I left the choice to him and settled into the position that he had suggested.
I expressed the desire not to see it until it was finished, I preferred to wait for the final result. I was afraid of not being able to hide my eventual disappointment.
Three, maybe four hours posing, I was terribly tired and bored!

When Julian said “now you can come and look, I hope you like it” I walked a few steps and stood in front of my portrait.
I can only say that I was THRILLED! HE CAPTURED THE VERY ESSENCE OF ME!
I was moved by an emotion that only a masterpieces can evoke!

51. Questa sera resto a casa!

Ho bisogno di rilassarmi. Strano!?
Sono convinto che siate in molti a chiedervelo.
Tutta la mia vita e stata così… non mi piace annoiarmi…
Talvolta riposarmi è come annoiarmi, ma devo farlo, sento che il mio corpo ne ha bisogno. Forse, anche la mia mente!

Mi piace tanto dormire. Cerco di non prendere mai impegni presto la mattina. Mi piace svegliarmi, alzarmi, chiamare Lupo sul mio letto per pochi secondi, il tempo per farmi lavare la faccia dai suoi baci!

Questa sera starò tranquillo in vostra compagnia…!
Che cosa posso cucinarmi per cena? Mi sembra di avere un ottimo Branzino in frigo. L’ho acquistato ieri da Claudio, la migliore pescheria di Milano.
Lo farò al sale, con un qualche patatina nuova intorno…
Ve l’ho fatta venire l’acquolina in bocca? Mi toccherà invitarvi tutti! Tutti a cena a casa mia, per dimostrarvi che non vi sto prendendo in giro!

Mi siedo davanti al computer, beh, un computer professionale con due schermi giganti e due stampanti fotografiche professionali. Una delle stampanti è per il formato normale A4 e A3, mentre l’altra è un plotter per formati più grandi.

Non sono bravissimo, ma me la cavo! Non voglio essere troppo tecnico e perdere la mia spontaneità quando creo i disegni da stampare sui miei tessuti!

Per descrivervi la mia casa potrei iniziare a dirvi che è un grande studio, un grande monolocale che mi permette di fare ciò che voglio. Libri e riviste di moda a metri… (in altezza) un po’ ovunque, due grandi divani di pelle bianchi con tantissimi cuscini, zebrati, giraffati e… leopardati!

Nel centro, fra due colonne, un cavallo Persiano antico, della metà del ‘700, che acquistai da un antiquario, diversi anni fa.
Sei grandissime finestre che danno molta luce alla casa e che si affacciano su una delle strade principali e su un bellissimo parco, il luogo preferito da Lupo!

E’ arrivato il momento di parlarvi di un bellissimo ritratto che Julian Schnabel mi ha fatto a New York 6 o 7 anni fa. Schnabel e’ uno fra i più grandi pittori moderni del nostro tempo, per me è il numero uno. Non ritengo di essere nella posizione ideale per criticare la pittura moderna. Le mie origini fiorentine mi legano ad un senso di vera arte e i miei gusti non vanno molto oltre Picasso!

Roberto Cavalli Milano Mi recai nel suo studio… affascinantissimo… Situato nel West Village… uno dei quartieri più belli e artistici di New York… Shnabel, mio grande amico, Mi aveva invitato e quando mi disse che desiderava dipingere il mio ritratto ne fui incredibilmente onorato!
Il mio ritratto e molto grande e Schnabel non ha usato una tela tradizionale. Su di un grande pannello ha incollato tantissimi piatti in porcellana. Alcuni interi e altri frantumati, e su quest’opera, che lui chiama moderna, ha dipinto il mio ritratto!

Entrai nello studio e quando vidi questo grande telaio con tanti piatti bianchi cementati sopra, rimasi scioccato. Non mi sarei mai immaginato il risultato…
Sorrisi dentro di me quando Julian mi chiese se desideravo un’espressione seria o sorridente. Conosco l’arte moderna e in quel momento ero molto scettico sulla somiglianza! Lasciai a lui la scelta e mi sistemai nella posizione che lui mi aveva suggerito.
Gli espressi il desiderio di non vedere l’opera a metà, ho preferivo attendere di vedere il risultato finale. Temevo di non riuscire a nascondere un mio eventuale disappunto. Tre, forse quattro ore in posa, ero terribilmente stanco e annoiato!

Quando Julian mi disse “adesso puoi venire, spero ti piaccia” feci alcuni passi e andai davanti al mio ritratto, vi posso solo dire che ne rimasi ENTUSIASTA!
AVEVA COLTO LA MIA ESPRESSIONE!
Ero commosso dall’emozione. Quell’emozione che solo i capolavori riescono a suscitarti!
