Michael Jackson had organized a small, private dinner, I would say a very intimate dinner because we were completely alone in the restaurant of one of the most prestigious hotels in Las Vegas, away from prying eyes.

Finally he began to tell me about his desire to usher in a new period of his musical life. A new style to which he wished to give a new look.

He made me realize that he wanted to abandon forever the short jackets, tight pants, white socks with loafers blacks. He had already noticed that I was wearing – as I always do – ankle boots in black suede. Well, that would be a look that he would like. He made me realize that he greatly admired the fantasies of the embroideries we had put on the shiny fabrics of some of our women’s jackets.

So he wanted something that would stand out, a rock-chic-elegance.

We left one another promising to meet again soon and I assured him that I would send some sketches and ideas for his new Michael Jackson look.

From that day we began to talk one another often. He had already accepted some of my proposals and, with the help of my son Daniele, we organized a first meeting in London to show him an exquisitely worked jacket we had designed for him. He was impressed!

His first return to the public would be in London during the “Fashion Rocks”. There was great expectation; the press had given a lot of coverage to his new look and I was part of that great event.

The final examination gown was exciting. Michael was delighted and expressed his approval!

During the concert the audience was screaming his name to the rhythm of the music. Michael continued to dance walking on the stage. The audience reached out to touch him, just to experience the sensation of touching him and his clothes.

Michael took off his jacket, swung it twice over his head and threw it into the screaming audience!

I looked at Daniele’s face. He was shocked! The wonderful “jacket” that had cost so much creative effort had ended up in the hands of a fan who certainly could not possibly imagine what had gone into it!

When Michael returned to the backstage I hugged him, and jokingly expressed my disappointment about the jacket… “Roberto, please, I was very excited… Just make me a new one…!” he said, hugging me again.

The world has lost a great artist and I have lost a friend.

Michael Jackson aveva organizzato una piccola cena, direi molto intima perché eravamo completamente soli, nel ristorante di uno dei più prestigiosi hotel di Las Vegas: un piccolo tavolo in un salottino lontano da occhi indiscreti.

Finalmente cominciò a parlarmi del suo desiderio di inaugurare un nuovo periodo della sua vita musicale. Un nuovo stile al quale avrebbe desiderato dare anche un nuovo look.

Mi fece capire che voleva abbandonare per sempre le giacche corte, i pantaloni attillati, i calzini bianchi con i mocassini neri. Aveva già notato che io portavo – come del resto faccio sempre – stivaletti in camoscio nero; bene, li avrebbe voluti uguali anche lui, e mi fece capire che ammirava molto le fantasie dei ricami di alcune mie giacche femminili su tessuti lucidi.

Insomma desiderava qualcosa di appariscente, un rock-chic-elegante.

Ci lasciammo promettendoci di rivederci presto, e gli assicurai che gli avrei inviato alcuni schizzi e idee-proposta per il nuovo look Michael Jackson!

Da quel giorno cominciammo a sentirci spesso. Aveva già accettato alcune mie proposte, e con l’aiuto di mio figlio Daniele, organizzammo un primo meeting a Londra per una laboriosissima giacca che l’aveva particolarmente colpito!

Il suo primo ritorno in pubblico sarebbe stato a Londra in occasione del “Fashion Rocks”. C’era grande attesa; la stampa aveva dato molto spazio anche al suo nuovo look, e io mi sentivo parte di quel grande evento.

La prova finale dell’abito fu eccitante; Michael era contentissimo e mi dimostrava tutta la sua approvazione e simpatia!

Durante il concerto i ragazzi del pubblico urlavano il suo nome seguendo il ritmo della musica. Michael continuò a ballare camminando sulla passerella. I ragazzi si allungavano per toccarlo, solo per provare la sensazione di sfiorare i suoi abiti.

Michael si tolse la giacca, la fece ruotare due volte sopra la testa e la gettò in mezzo al pubblico in delirio!

Guardai la faccia di Daniele: era scioccato! La meravigliosa “giacca” che c’era costata tanta fatica era finita nelle mani d’un fan che certamente non ne poteva apprezzare e conoscere la storia!

Quando Michael rientrò lo abbracciai, e scherzando gli feci capire il mio disappunto… “Roberto, please, I was very excited… Just make me a new one…!” mi disse, abbracciandomi nuovamente.

Il mondo ha perso un grande artista ed io ho perso un amico.

[:en]367. My Life Runs Too Fast…

There are moments when I stop to think that my life runs too fast!

Actually time passes by at the same speed for everyone, but when you chase life to pursue new emotions, time seems to go faster.

If I look back, my life seems so long, but if I look ahead, I know that I have to run. I have not much time to waste. The desires and dreams yet to be realized are still many, perhaps too many.

How many times, as a young man, did I think we ought to be born old and die young!

But in the end I’m happy to have come this far, happy to have walked with my own legs, happy that I have not bowed to any compromise, happy to have exaggerated. Excess often is success!

I am happy I have not taken life too seriously. Happy that I was a teenager who has grown old! I’m happy I had a Mother who taught me to grow up and then how to live, who taught me the other commandments, the ones that God omitted to give us.

I’m happy with myself, happy to be humble with the humble and arrogant with the arrogant if necessary, happy to look people in the eye, happy to feel important just because I feel loved and respected, happy to have five wonderful children, each uniquely different from the other.

Happy to feel emotion when I see from my window the first blossoms on peach trees that announce the arrival of spring. I am happy to be able to laugh with happiness, happy to be able to cry with emotion, happy to be born, happy to die when my turn comes. I have faith in God, and I do not think He will betray me in the very last moment I shall stand by Him.

Be happy, life is wonderful!

367. La mia Vita Corre Troppo Velocemente…

Ci sono dei momenti nei quali mi soffermo a pensare che la mia vita corre troppo velocemente!

In realtà il tempo passa uguale per tutti, ma a rincorrere la vita e a inseguire sempre nuove emozioni, sembra che il tempo vada più in fretta.

Se mi guardo indietro, la vita mi appare tanto lunga, mentre se guardo avanti, so che devo correre, che non ho più tanto tempo da sprecare, e i desideri, i sogni ancora da realizzare sono ancora tanti, forse troppi.

Quante volte da giovane ho pensato che avremmo dovuto nascere vecchi e morire giovani!

Ma in fondo sono felice di essere arrivato fin qui, felice di aver camminato con le mie sole gambe, felice di non aver ceduto a nessun compromesso, felice di avere esagerato. L’eccesso spesso è successo!

Sono felice di non aver preso la vita troppo seriamente. Felice di essere rimasto un ragazzo che da piccolo è diventato grande! Sono felice di aver avuto una mamma che mi ha insegnato a crescere, e poi a vivere. Che mi ha insegnato gli altri comandamenti, quelli che Dio si è dimenticato di darci.

Sono felice con me stesso, felice di essere umile con gli umili e arrogante con gli arroganti se necessario, felice di guardare le persone negli occhi, felice di sentirmi importante solo perché mi sento amato e stimato, felice di avere cinque figli meravigliosi, così unici e diversi.

Felice di provare emozione quando vedo i primi fiori di pesco, dalla finestra, che mi annunciano l’arrivo della primavera. Felice di saper ridere con felicità, felice di saper piangere con commozione, felice di essere nato, felice di morire quando sarà arrivato il mio turno. Tanto ho fiducia in Dio, e non credo che mi tradirà proprio all’ultimo momento.

Siate felici, la vita è meravigliosa!

[:en]366. I started my life as a designer on tiptoe…

I began my life as a designer on tiptoe. I was afraid of everything that could put me on the spot. I was very shy and insecure. I approached interviews with an incredible fear.

In the first few seconds my voice was hoarse, I had a frog in my throat, it didn’t seem to want to produce a normal sound. After two minutes it was a bit ‘better, and after another five I would not want to stop!

Often my first words were to break the ice: “I’m emotional… I’m used to expressing myself only through my dresses…!”. Later, however, everything flowed easily.

Today, the success has come, and it is well established. Maybe it was because of my great desire to get there.

I wish I could give to all young people my piece of advice – if you want something with enough resolve, tenacity and stubbornness, you almost always will be able to achieve it.

The important thing is to take life with constructive lightness, because life is an adventure, and definitely you have to smile.

That’s why sometimes I say that my dresses, in their plasticity, in their particularity, should make you smile or, at least, help you to smile.

Today I have changed. So Much. Perhaps too much.
Why do I say too much? Because fear means emotion, and too much security, the great confidence in myself that I have now acquired, has denied me some of that emotions… I mean, I preferred the old version of myself! I was always afraid of not being “up”, of not being “on”.

With the success I have lost so many things… I lost a little of my freedom, a little of my simplicity, even though I do everything I can to remain a simple person.

Always follow your dreams…

366. Ho cominciato la mia vita di designer in punta di piedi…

Ho cominciato la mia vita di designer in punta di piedi. Temevo tutto ciò̀ che potesse mettermi in mostra. Ero d’una timidezza e d’una incertezza esagerate. Affrontavo le inter- viste con una paura incredibile.

Nei primi secondi la mia voce era rauca, impastata, sembrava non voler uscire. Dopo due minuti andava un po’ meglio, e dopo altri cinque non avrei più̀ voluto smettere!

Spesso le mie prime parole per rompere il ghiaccio erano: “sono emozionato… sono abituato a parlare solo attraverso i miei abiti…!”. Dopo, però, tutto scorreva con facilità.

Oggi il successo è arrivato, e si è pure consolidato. Forse è stato merito del mio grande desiderio di arrivare.

Questo concetto vorrei poterlo infondere in tutti i giovani, se vuoi una cosa con risolutezza, tenacia e ostinazione, quasi sempre riuscirai a ottenerla.

L’importante è prendere la vita con leggerezza costruttiva, perché la vita è un’avventura, e decisamente devi sorriderle.

Ecco perché a volte dico che i miei abiti, nella loro plasticità, nella loro particolarità, devono far sorridere, o meglio, devono aiutare a sorridere.

Oggi sono cambiato. Tanto. Forse troppo.

Perché dico troppo? Perché il timore significa emozione, e la troppa sicurezza, la grande confidenza in me stesso che ormai ho acquisito, mi rende più̀ freddo… Insomma, mi preferivo prima! Quando avevo sempre paura di non essere all’altezza.

Con il successo ho perso tante cose… Ho perso un po’ della mia libertà, ho perso un po’ della mia semplicità, anche se faccio di tutto per restare una persona semplice.

Seguite sempre i vostri sogni…
