70. This morning I booked a limousine early, at ten o’clock.

Excuse the “early” but when I’m on holiday my schedule changes along with my habits… eat … sleep… “Not thinking”!
Our desire is to visit the various Souks (markets) in Dubai.
The textile market… gold… silver… spices… many others.
I have never described the traffic in Dubai before, but it is unbearable!
I have only seen anything like it in Bangkok and Kiev.
The disorganization creates intolerable traffic jams. Even the air-conditioning cannot make these trips pleasant!
Dubai extends both in length and in width – an eight-lane highway in each direction through the city. Many skyscrapers in different materials… architects from around the world have been able to give vent to their imagination.
The Oriental lifestyle… interesting, fascinating… crafts… machining… engraving of metals… beautiful hand embroidery… We start with an exploration of handcrafts, a world of its own among the souks of Dubai… textiles and embroideries.
The fabric market is in the east part of town. I though I would find a classic market not particularly organized with lots of products spread out on benches. None of that! Hundreds of interesting shops, with windows that display colorful silks, elaborately embroidered, worn by mannequins in various poses! We stop at the store that seems the most special… most colorful.
At first, I am confused. These colors, this embroidery does not belong to my fashion world, my culture… then next, as I absorb the colors… the embroidery… the prices… I lose my mind … I buy everything!
I am sure that when I see them again in Florence, they will look different… the charm of the Orient makes everything look so unique, so exotic!
My second stop is at a shop that is selling local costume jewelry, beautiful necklaces… bracelets fit for a queen… brilliant… rubies… emeralds… everything seems to ring true! I buy several items, I can use them for certain applications such as evening wear!
The return trip to the hotel takes more time, I will use this time to tell you more about this strange city! To my right, the tallest tower in the world, Burj Khalifa 160 storeys – 2,723 ft, in my opinion nothing special, rises to the sky like a long needle. It doesn’t resonate with me, it doesn’t strike a chord. The thirty middle storeys, are being used by Giorgio Armani for an Hotel and a Night Club
In the distance I see the Burj Al Arab Hotel, that looks like a sail… on the sea… but not completely… the only seven-star hotel in the world… it wraps around a huge aquarium entrance… ten beautiful girls in oriental costumes welcome you… the rooms are nice… exaggeratedly golden… huge canopy beds…
The pool is very big. To get to the beach you have to use a Golf Cart!
I can tell you a story on every skyscraper that flows past in front of me… each one has its own distinct feature… some are beautiful, others ugly!
Perhaps now you understand, Dubai is a big fascinating city… going from one extreme to another… a city where money has the upper hand… on the culture… the taste… the art…
A city of today, which leaves nothing for tomorrow…
Tomorrow, before returning to the collections, I’ll describe my last day in Dubai…

70. Questa mattina ho prenotato una limousine molto presto, alle dieci.

Scusate per il “molto presto” ma quando sono in vacanza i miei orari e le mie abitudini cambiano, mangiare… dormire… “non pensare”!
Il nostro desiderio oggi è quello di visitare i vari Souk (mercati) di Dubai. Il mercato del tessile… oro… argento… spezie… e molto altro.
Non vi ho mai descritto il traffico di Dubai, è insopportabile!
Ho visto qualche cosa di simile solo a Bangkok e Kiev.
La disorganizzazione crea degli ingorghi intollerabili. L’aria condizionata non è sufficiente a rendere questi trasferimenti gradevoli!
Dubai si estende tanto in lunghezza che in larghezza, autostrade a otto corsie per ogni senso di marcia attraversano la città. Tanti grattacieli in materiali diversi… qui gli architetti da tutto il mondo hanno potuto dare sfogo alle proprie fantasie.
Lo stile di vita orientale è interessantissimo, affascinante… l’artigianato… la lavorazione e incisione dei metalli… gli splendidi ricami fatti a mano… Iniziamo la nostra esplorazione nel mondo dell’handcraft proprio dal souk dei tessuti e ricami.
Il mercato dei tessuti si trova nella parte est della città.
Pensavo di trovare un mercato classico non particolarmente organizzato con tanti tessuti esposti su banchi. Niente di tutto questo! Centinaia d’interessanti negozi, con le vetrine che espongono coloratissime sete sapientemente ricamate e indossate da mannequin in tutte le posizioni! Ci fermiamo nel negozio che ci sembra il più speciale… il più colorato.
In un primo momento, resto confuso, quei colori e quei ricami non appartengono al mio mondo della moda, alla mia cultura… ma dopo, i colori… i ricami… i prezzi… mi hanno fatto perdere la testa… avrei comprato tutto! Sono certo che quando li riguarderò a Firenze mi sembreranno diversi… il fascino dell’Oriente ti fa apparire tutto così unico e speciale!
La mia seconda tappa è un negozio di bigiotteria, collane meravigliose… bracciali da regine… brillanti… rubini… smeraldi… tutto sembrava vero! Ho comprato diversi oggetti, li potrei usare come applicazioni per certi abiti da sera!
Il rientro in albergo è ancora più lungo, utilizzerò questo tempo per darvi qualche notizia in più su questa strana citta! Alla mia destra la torre più alta del mondo, Burj Khalifa 160 piani – 829 metri, s’innalza al cielo come un lunghissimo ago, non mi suscita nessuna emozione. I trenta piani centrali, sono stati utilizzati da Giorgio Armani per un Hotel e un Night Club.
In lontananza scorgo il Burj Al Arab Hotel, che assomiglia ad una vela… sul mare… ma non completamente… l’unico hotel al mondo a sette stelle… un grande acquario ne avvolge l’ingresso… dieci belle ragazze in costumi orientali ti danno il benvenuto… le camere sono belle… esageratamente dorate… enormi letti a baldacchino…
La piscina è molto grande e per arrivare alla spiaggia devi utilizzare una Golf Car!
Potrei raccontarvi una storia per ogni grattacielo che mi scorre davanti… ognuno è speciale. Alcuni sono bellissimi, altri orribili!
Forse ora avete capito, Dubai è una città affascinante… qui si passa da un estremo all’altro… una città nella quale i soldi hanno il sopravvento sulla cultura… sul gusto… sull’arte…
Una città di oggi che non lascerà niente al domani…
Domani, prima di tornare alle collezioni, vi descriverò il mio ultimo giorno a Dubai…

Destination Dubai, we shall stay at the hotel we normally stay at so we shall feel at home. We will spend our evenings at the Cavalli Club. I have already described the Cavalli Club in Dubai and I could continue indefinitely to talk about all the features of this fantastic place. In everyday language it is “pretty cool!” The environment is amazing… the food “THE BEST”… from midnight on… the most beautiful music… the most beautiful girls in the world!
The sand is golden, completely different from the red sand of the Namibian desert… every room of the hotel is an elevated bungalow with a commanding view of the desert… Oriental décor… very stylish… a heated knife-edge swimming pool creates the illusion of flowing out into the desert beyond!
