73. Marta and Eva the elegant Queens of the Costa Smeralda…

We were invited to each and every dinner… beautiful villas and stunning boats… a world unknown to me. I enjoyed the novelty and it was a pleasure to see Eva able to show off her beauty wearing the clothing we had created just for her.

A few days before the end of the holidays, in consideration for all the kind invitations we had received, Eva decided to organize a party at our villa. It was a perfect place to which we could invite all the people we had met during the 20 days in Porto Rotondo.

Eva and I have a great quality, which is also a drawback – we do not know how to do things simply! What we do has necessarily to be “extraordinary”. Eva likes to organize and to exaggerate and she is brilliant at it.

I organize a van with many, many fabrics… lots and lots of pillows… lots and lots of everything that we can bring from Florence… lots and lots of things that we have in storage and often use for the fashion shows.

Two nights before we had been invited to a wonderful party that Roby Girombelli had organized for the launch of a perfume. Roby introduced us to her friend who had helped her to organize her large, successful launch party, Lele Mora! Lele found a DJ for us and helped Eva in setting up our party.

The beautiful green grass is half-covered with pillows… colorful… zebra prints… thousands of candles… all sizes… a unique atmosphere… rivers of Champagne… a night for all to remember!

This party, organized in just five days, immediately becomes the most beautiful party of the summer! Everybody is talking about it. Those who were invited considered themselves very lucky! The holidays were over. Our first VIP holiday, with the VIPs!

The following year we rented the same villa. Eva began to organize the materials for the new big party as early as June! Tomorrow I will tell you about it.

73. Marta ed Eva le eleganti regine della Costa Smeralda…

Eravamo invitati a ogni cena… ville bellissime e barche incredibili… un mondo a me sconosciuto… la novità mi divertiva e provavo piacere nel vedere Eva fare sfoggio della sua bellezza indossando gli abiti che avevamo creato solo per lei.

Mancavano pochi giorni alla fine delle vacanze, non sapevamo come sdebitarci con i nuovi amici, Eva decise di organizzare un party nella villa che avevamo affittato, si prestava ad invitare tutte le persone che avevamo conosciuto nei venti giorni trascorsi a Porto Rotondo.

Eva ed io, abbiamo un grande pregio, che io chiamo anche difetto, non sappiamo fare le cose semplici! Ciò che facciamo deve essere obbligatoriamente “Straordinario”. Eva si diverte a organizzare ed esagerare e riesce a farlo in modo splendido.

Organizzo un furgone con tanti, tanti tessuti, tanti, tanti cuscini. Tanto di tutto ciò che si poteva portare da Firenze, tanti materiali che abbiamo nei magazzini e che vengono spesso utilizzati per le sfilate.

Due sere prima siamo stati invitati ad una bellissima festa che Roby Girombelli aveva organizzato per il lancio di un profumo. Roby ci presenta un suo amico che l’aveva aiutata ad organizzare con successo il gran party, Lele Mora! Lele ci trovò un DJ e aiutò Eva nell’allestimento.

Il prato verdissimo e bellissimo fu semicoperto da cuscini colorati e zebrati. Migliaia di candele, di tutte le dimensioni, creavano un’atmosfera speciale. Champagne a fiumi! Una serata indimenticabile!

Organizzata in soli cinque giorni, diventò subito la più bella festa dell’estate! Ne parlavano tutti. Coloro che erano stati invitati si consideravano decisamente dei fortunati! Le vacanze finirono. Le nostre prime vacanze VIP, con i VIP!

Naturalmente l’anno successivo affittammo la stessa villa e Eva incominciò a organizzare fin da giugno i materiali per la nuova gran festa! Domani vi racconterò i dettagli.

Desidero farvi sognare… siete tutti invitati alla mia festa… ad agosto nella villa di Cavalli… Porto Rotondo…

72. Today Is an Indescribable Day…

72. Today is an indescribable day…

Rain and cold, gray weather that forces you to keep the lights on. I’m sitting at my desk trying to improve what I have done so far for the collection. It’s like doing a review of what you have already studied in an effort to see what is missing, what you missed the first time.

I create… I think… try to concentrate…. turn off the phone so as not to be distracted.

Sexy? Sure, it’s a collection for the summer and who loves Roberto Cavalli, knows that I love the WOMAN. I create for a woman that I desire!

Special? Certainly new… it is not easy… sometimes it seems I have already created and done everything… put on some music… it helps me not to feel empty!

I think it’s better to tell you about some flashback of my life. I promised to tell you of my holiday in Sardinia, about my parties that became a MUST of the summer. Everyone wanted to be invited, to be able to say “I was there too.”

I do not remember exactly what year, in the late 90’s. I remember that I had sold the boat that we used in August to go from one small port to another. Eva and I had gained the sympathy and friendship of Marta Marzotto. She loved the colors of my fabrics and I created some beautiful kaftans just for her. Martha has always had a particular liking for Oriental fashion.

Marta told us about the Costa Smeralda and her home in Porto Rotondo. We had never been to Sardinia and so we were persuaded to rent a beautiful villa near her. The villa was surrounded by a large lawn that extended down to the sea, a paradise of the Costa Smeralda!

For us, Sardinia was a novelty, a villa for rent… new friends… Marta was the real Queen, the most beloved, and with her we were introduced to the most beautiful villas and invited to the most exclusive parties.

At that time I was not the affirmed designer that I am today, but Martha introduced us with an affection and enthusiasm that made us feel important! Lunches… dinners… parties…

I realized that I was neglecting my children, I played with them much less than when, with a small boat on which I was the only captain / sailor and cook, we sailed from one port to another. Each beach was a beautiful playground!

The Costa Smeralda was proving addictive. I liked it, everything was new, but I felt out of place, I wondered how I would continue with, what for me, was a make-believe life.

I miss the sound of the sea … the wind ruffling my hair … the cold shower I get while sitting in the bow… the sun, reaching the horizon, spraying the sky with a red and orange… each time the emotion sends shivers up my spine…

This is the beginning, my first contact with Sardinia.

72. La giornata di oggi è indescrivibile…

Pioggia, acqua e freddo, un tempo grigio che ti obbliga a tenere le luci accese. Sono seduto alla mia scrivania e cerco di migliorare quanto ho fatto per la collezione fino ad oggi. E’ come ripassare ciò che hai studiato per capire cosa ti manca, cosa ti è sfuggito.

Creo e penso, cerco di concentrarmi, spesso spengo il telefono per non essere distratto.

Sexy? Certo, è una collezione per l’estate e chi ama Roberto Cavalli, sa che amo la DONNA, che creo per una donna che vorrei desiderare!

Speciale? Certamente nuova, non è facile, talvolta mi sembra di avere già creato e fatto tutto. Metto un po’ di musica mi aiuta a non sentirmi vuoto!

Credo sia meglio che vi racconti qualche sprazzo della mia vita. Avevo promesso di raccontarvi delle mie vacanze in Sardegna, delle mie feste, erano diventate un MUST dell’estate. Tutti desideravano essere invitati per dire “C’ero anch’io”.

Non ricordo esattamente in che anno, verso la fine degli anni 90. Ricordo che avevo venduto la barca che usavamo in agosto per spostarci da un porticciolo all’altro. Eva ed io avevamo acquisito la simpatia e l’amicizia di Marta Marzotto. Amava i colori dei miei tessuti e creavo solo per lei dei caffetani bellissimi. Marta ha sempre avuto una particolare simpatia per la moda orientale.

Marta ci parlava della Costa Smerala, della sua casa a Porto Rotondo. Non eravamo mai stati in Sardegna e ci lasciammo convincere a prendere in affitto una bellissima villa vicina alla sua. La villa era circondata da un grandissimo prato che si estendeva fino al mare, un vero paradiso della Costa Smeralda!

Per noi la Sardegna era una vera novità, una villa in affitto… nuovi amici… Marta era la vera Regina, la più amata, e con lei fummo introdotti nelle ville più belle e invitati alle feste più esclusive.

Allora non ero il designer affermato di oggi, ma Marta ci presentava con un tale affetto ed entusiasmo da farci sentire importanti! Pranzi… cene… party…

Mi accorgevo che stavo trascurando i miei bambini, giocavo con loro molto meno rispetto a quando, con la piccola barca della quale io ero l’unico capitano, marinaio e cuoco ci spostavamo da un porto all’altro. Ogni bella spiaggia era un bellissimo campo da gioco!

La Costa Smeralda mi stava contaminando, mi piaceva, era tutto nuovo, ma mi sentivo fuori posto, mi chiedevo per quanto avrei continuato a “giocare alle signore”.

Sento la mancanza del rumore del mare… del vento che ti scompone i capelli… della doccia fredda che prendo a prua… del sole, che raggiunge l’orizzonte spruzzando il cielo con un colore rosso e arancio… ogni volta mi vengono i brividi dall’emozione…

Questo è l’inizio, il mio primo contatto con la Sardegna…

71. Finally a nice sunny day, I try to take it all, every ray!

It’s my last day in Dubai and, talking with some friends in Italy, they tell me to be prepared for some cold and rainy autumnal weather. I put on my earpiece with some music, I take two drops of sleeping pills and lie in the sun, like a fish completely oiled and ready for the oven!

I am about to enter the world of dreams when I hear someone with a friendly voice call me. It is a voice I have not heard for some years but I recognize it immediately and makes me jump.
“ALFONSO!” a dear friend of many years. I’m sure many of you know Alfonso Signorini, the great editor of the weekly CHI magazine.

We share a friendship that goes back to the good and fun times of “my” Sardinia! Every summer, on the 11th of August, the party at Roberto and Eva Cavalli’s “home” was a “MUST”. The event of the summer. Every summer we used to rent one of the most beautiful villas in Porto Rotondo. Eva was responsible for organizing and preparing the party from the beginning of July. The beginning of August a van headed to Sardinia carrying all that we created for this unforgettable evening. I can tell you so many things about those parties but I prefer to keep them for a story completely dedicated to Sardinia, to the famous Cavalli’s parties.

Alfonso was quietly walking with two friends along the shoreline where the waves are hiding in the sand. Hugs and kisses, the usual pleasantries of two friends who meet in a foreign land and have not seen one another for a few years!

“YOU HAVEN’T EVER BEEN TO MY CLUB? TONIGHT WE ARE TOGETHER. YOU WILL BE MY GUEST AND IT WILL BE A BIG SURPRISE!”

We leave all together from the hotel. I cannot wait to show Alfonso the CAVALLI CLUB. I do not want to describe it to him so as not to spoil the surprise. Is it the same for you. On other occasions I have tried to let you imagine the CLUB, but the emotion that you will experience when you get the chance to be in Dubai, will be truly unique!

The Cavalli Club is a really “cool place”. I take Mister CHI by the arm, and wait to see his face. “I TOLD YOU SO. THIS IS NOT EASY TO DESCRIBE!” Alfonso is a special man. An artist, a creative person, a person who has seen many special things and I anxiously wait for his judgment!

His eyes are shining. Alfonso is like me, an enthusiast! He expresses what he feels. I enjoy squeezing his arm while I accompany him to any particular corner of the CLUB. Then we sit at the large central table, the Mr. CAVALLI table! It has been a long time since I have had such a fun evening. Alfonso is a showman, he transmits sympathy. When I have fun, I become an unleashed boy!

Gina, also a longtime friend, is with us. Do not imagine a beautiful blonde girl, Gina is a great big man with little hair and an indescribable sympathy. He wishes, jokingly of course, to finish this beautiful evening with a conquest. A black waiter is his favorite. You cannot imagine how much fun we had. We even neglected the belly dancers and the two Arabic singers, ultra famous in the Middle East!

I would like to continue but, as time passes, my eyes begin to veil.

Tomorrow morning I have to leave early for Milan. Work is waiting for me!

I hope you have spent a great time with us and I hope to have made you smile at least!

71. Finalmente una bella giornata di sole, cerco di assorbirlo tutto, fino all’ultimo raggio!

E’ la mia ultima giornata a Dubai e parlando con alcuni amici in Italia mi informano che al mio rientro troverò pioggia e un freddo autunnale. Mi metto l’auricolare con la musica, prendo due gocce di sonnifero e mi stendo al sole, completamente oliato, come un pesce prima di essere messo in forno!

Sto per entrare nel mondo dei sogni quando mi sento chiamare da una voce amica. Una voce che non sentivo da qualche anno ma che riconosco immediatamente e mi fa sobbalzare.
“ALFONSO!” un caro amico da tanti anni. Sono sicuro che molti di voi conoscono Alfonso Signorini, il grande direttore del settimanale CHI.

Condividiamo un’amicizia dai tempi belli e divertenti della “mia” Sardegna! Ogni estate, l’undici di Agosto, la festa a casa di Roberto e Eva Cavalli era un “MUST “. L’avvenimento dell’estate. Ogni estate prendevamo in affitto una delle ville più belle di Porto Rotondo. Eva si occupava dell’organizzazione e della preparazione della festa già dai primi di Luglio. I primi di Agosto un furgone portava in Sardegna tutto ciò che avevamo creato per questa serata indimenticabile. Potrei raccontarvi tante cose di queste feste ma preferisco rimandarvi a un racconto completamente dedicato alla Sardegna, alle famose feste in casa Cavalli.

Alfonso stava tranquillamente camminando con due amici sul bagnasciuga, là dove l’ondina si nasconde nella prima sabbia. Baci e abbracci, i soliti convenevoli di due amici che s’incontrano in terra straniera e non si vedevano da qualche anno!

“NON SEI MAI STATO AL MIO CLUB? QUESTA SERA STIAMO INSIEME. SIETE MIEI OSPITI E SARA’ UNA GRANDE SORPRESA!”

Partiamo tutti insieme dall’hotel. Non vedo l’ora di mostrare ad Alfonso il CAVALLI CLUB. Non volevo descriverglielo per non rovinargli la sorpresa. Anche per voi è la stessa cosa. Altre volte ho cercato di farvelo immaginare, ma l’emozione che proverete quando avrete la possibilità di venire a Dubai, sarà veramente unica!

Il CAVALLI CLUB è una gran “figata”. Prendo per il braccio Mister CHI e aspetto di vedere la sua faccia. “TE LO AVEVO DETTO .CHE NON ERA FACILMENTE DESCRIVIBILE!” Alfonso è un uomo speciale. Un artista, un creativo, una persona che di cose speciali ne ha viste tante ed io attendo con ansia il suo giudizio!

Gli brillano gli occhi. Alfonso è come me, un entusiasta! Esprime ciò che prova, mi diverto a stringergli il braccio e accompagnarlo in ogni angolo più particolare del CLUB. Dopo, ci sediamo al gran tavolo centrale, il tavolo di Mister CAVALLI! Era molto tempo che non trascorrevo una serata cosi divertente. Alfonso è uno showman, trasmette simpatia. E quando io mi diverto, divento un ragazzo scatenato!

Con noi c’è Gina, anche lui un amico di vecchia data. Non immaginatevi una bella ragazza bionda, Gina è un gran pezzo d’uomo con pochi capelli e una simpatia indescrivibile. Deside, scherzando naturalmente, finire questa bella serata con una conquista. Un cameriere di colore era il suo preferito. Non potete immaginarvi quante risate ci siamo fatti. Abbiamo anche trascurato le ballerine della danza del ventre e due cantanti di musica araba, ultra famosi in Medio Oriente!

Vorrei continuare, ma il tempo passa e i miei occhi incominciano a velarsi.

Domani mattina dovrò partire prestissimo per Milano. Il lavoro mi aspetta!

Spero di avervi fatto trascorrere una bella serata con noi e spero di avervi fatto perlomeno sorridere!
