67. By February, in the following season, the collection had already acquired its own style. The prints were easier and everything seemed more real. I also hired some young people to help me in Paris.

I had abandoned the idea of getting into fashion so as to have a better chance with the models.

Now the reason for my presence in fashion had changed. I was enjoying myself creating designs that I thought of as my art-form.

I studied art, I always breathed art and my art could be my fashion!

February 1971, I receive many, many compliments, but the order book continues to be empty… compared to the first season, I am much more nervous… It is a failure…
I will not and can not consider myself as a “no win”.

I spend my evenings in Paris, with my closest friends, without even thinking about the models who are around me all day! The same Florentine boy, who used to spend some time with the American tourists in Piazza Signoria in Florence, is beginning to become quite serious!

I spend my days creating. I’m not worried about shaping or style. I have an Englishman in my team who is helping me. I am looking for a way to make my printed leather more special… less flat… I have to teach her to talk… move… I have to breathe life into her!

In my experiments I am printing thousands of pieces of leather in many different designs and many different colors, from black to red to white, through every range of color possible!

I like the entire set of the prints… I gather all the pieces of leather together and, closing my eyes, I begin to choose them one at a time in a completely random… spontaneous… way.
I am pleased, but I do not know how to make concrete this colored rain. I want others to share this experience, this emotion.

COLOR IS LIFE!

Each piece of leather is cut into small squares and then sewn one to the other… spontaneity becomes fantasy… I create many sheets of one meter by one meter… I cut a small garment… a blouson… a vest…

I like them, but they are a bit “too strong”… I have to keep the garments in the collection softer and more wearable…
I cut a blazer from a blue not-so-well-died leather to which I added pockets, lapels, small strips at the ends of the sleeves, these details I cut from the previously made leather patchwork.

Now I am happy! The collection begin to take shape, but there is still something that can make it even more special…

67. La stagione successiva, a febbraio, la collezione aveva assunto un suo stile, le stampe erano più facili e tutto mi sembrava più reale. Avevo anche assunto alcuni ragazzi per aiutarmi a Parigi.

Avevo abbandonato l’idea di fare moda per avere più chance con le modelle.

La ragione della mia presenza nella moda era cambiata, mi divertiva creare disegni che consideravo la mia forma di arte.

Ho studiato arte, ho sempre respirato arte e la mia arte poteva essere la mia moda!

Febbraio 1971, riscuoto tanti, tantissimi complimenti, ma il carnet degli ordini continua a essere vuoto! Rispetto alla prima stagione, sono molto più nervoso. E’ un insuccesso!
Non riesco e non posso considerarmi un “non vincente”.

Trascorro le mie serate a Parigi, con i miei amici più cari e senza minimamente pensare alle modelle che mi giravano intorno per tutta la giornata! Quel ragazzo fiorentino, che passava parte del suo tempo con le turiste americane in Piazza Signoria a Firenze, incominciava a diventare quasi serio!

Trascorro le mie giornate a creare. Non mi preoccupa la modellatura o lo style, ho un ragazzo inglese nel mio team che mi aiuta in questo. Sono alla ricerca di come rendere la mia pelle stampata più speciale… meno piatta… devo insegnarle a parlare… muoversi… devo darle vita!

In tutti i miei esperimenti ho stampato migliaia di pelli in tanti disegni differenti e tanti colori diversi, dal nero al rosso al bianco, attraverso ogni gamma di colore possibile!

Mi piace l’insieme di tutte le stampe. Riunisco tutte le pelli e chiudendo gli occhi inizio a sceglierle, una alla volta, in modo del tutto casuale… spontaneo…
Sono soddisfatto, ma non so come rendere concreta questa pioggia colorata, voglio far provare ad altri la mia stessa emozione.

IL COLORE E’ VITA!

Ogni pelle è quindi tagliata in piccoli quadratini di pochi centimetri che sono poi cuciti uno accanto all’altro. La spontaneità diventa fantasia! Creo tanti teli di un metro per un metro. Taglio qualche piccolo capo, un blouson… un gilè…

Mi piacevano, ma erano “troppo forti”, dovevo continuare la collezione con capi più soft e più facilmente indossabili… Taglio, in un modello blazer, una pelle blue maltinta a cui aggiungo le tasche, il revers, piccole strisce sul finale delle maniche, tutti questi particolari sono realizzati con parte dei miei teli a quadratini multicolori.

Ora sono soddisfatto! La Collezione incomincia a prendere forma, ma mancava ancora qualche cosa che potesse renderla ancora più speciale…

66. End of September 1970, I Am Off to Paris With My “COLLECTION”…

66. End of September 1970, I am off to Paris with my “COLLECTION”, my first collection!

I arrive at the Porte de Versailles at night, search for the stand that they have assigned to me, terrible position! I could not have expected any better since I had only decided to attend at the last moment. I contact a model agency for a model to model the collection. My first model! Even this choice was made at the last minute. The idea of falling in love had crossed my mind. This model is not my type… too bad!

First day. The few visitors who pass by my booth look very curious but the novelty of my collection is such that they need time to digest it! There is always a search for something new, but it takes courage to be the first!

The experience is unique and special. Being in Paris … meeting new people… new friends with whom I am still in touch!

I can’t get demoralized and I cannot give up. I need to start learning more about the fashion world and understand the whys and wherefores of it! I am conscious of not having a product that is easy.

I start to slowly look around… I look at the collections… the styles of the other designers… I begin to understand that I cannot be completely outside the system… I should exercise my fantasy about the fashion trend… the one desired by young women.

I stop dreaming and it all starts to become more realistic! Dreams…. desires… everything seems possible.

Throughout my life I have overcome so many obstacles through my will power. Without arrogance, without any help from anyone, just asking the most from myself.

I am 71 years old, I don’t deny that it seems impossible to me! I have the same guts and the same dreams I had when I started… when, without an invitation, I gate crashed that party… and even today I am exactly as I was then!

All this is thanks to the fact that I believe in my potential. I did not have an easy childhood with parents who could give me everything. Not because they were hard on me but because they themselves were not in a position to do so!

I often wonder why I want to tell you these details of my life, maybe because I want to talk to the many young people who read me…

I was like you… my fuel was my own will power!

66. Fine settembre 1970, parto per Parigi con la mia “COLLEZIONE”, la mia prima collezione!

Arrivo a Porte de Versailles a notte fonda, cerco lo stand che mi è stato assegnato, posizione terribile! Non potevo aspettarmi di meglio, avevo deciso di partecipare all’ultimo momento e quindi non potevo pretendere molto di più. Prendo contatto con un’agenzia di modelle, ho bisogno di una modella per indossare la collezione. La mia prima modella! Anche questa scelta fatta di corsa all’ultimo momento. La modella non è il mio tipo, peccato, speravo già di innamorarmi!

Primo giorno. Quei pochi visitatori che passano davanti al mio stand sembrano molto curiosi ma la novità è troppo una novità, occorre del tempo per digerirla! C’è sempre una ricerca del nuovo, ma nessuno vuole mai essere il primo!

L’esperienza è unica, speciale. Essere a Parigi… conoscere persone nuove… nuovi amici con cui ancora oggi sono in contatto!

Non posso demoralizzarmi e mollare. Devo iniziare a conoscere meglio il mondo della moda e capire tanti perché! Sono cosciente di non avere un prodotto facile.

Inizio lentamente a guardarmi intorno… osservo le collezioni… lo stile degli altri designer… incomincio a capire che non posso essere completamente al di fuori del sistema… devo esercitare la mia fantasia sulle tendenze della moda… quella moda desiderata dalle giovani donne.

Smetto di sognare e tutto incomincia a diventare più realistico! Sogni… desideri… tutto mi sembra realizzabile.

Ogni tuo sogno ha una password che solo tu conosci e che puoi scoprire con la forza della tua volontà! Mi piace raccontarvi questi miei segreti, possono sembrarvi assurdi, solo chi mi conosce può confermarvi che quanto vi sto raccontando corrisponde alla realtà.

Nella mia vita ho superato tanti ostacoli attraverso la mia forza di volontà, senza arroganza, senza aiuti da nessuno, chiedendo il massimo a me stesso.

Ho settantuno anni, non vi nascondo che mi sembra impossibile! Ho la stessa grinta e gli stessi sogni di quando ho incominciato… di quando mi sono imbucato senza invito a quel party… e ancora oggi sono esattamente come allora!

Tutto questo grazie al fatto che credo nelle mie possibilità. Non ho avuto una gioventù facile e i miei genitori non mi hanno accontentato in tutto. Non perché erano severi, ma perché non ne avevano la possibilità!

Mi chiedo spesso perché ho voglia di raccontarvi tanti particolari della mia vita, forse perché vorrei parlare a quei tanti giovani che mi leggono…

Io ero come voi… la mia benzina era la mia volontà!

Domani vi racconterò la fine del mio inizio e l’inizio del mio successo…

65. The adrenaline rush…

The enthusiasm kicks my adrenaline into gear and increases my positivity!

The “stamperia” [printing room] is a little gem that I create with very innovative ideas. I was the first in the world to print on ready-made sweaters. My designs have a critical advantage, over other prints, in that they shape the body’s silhouette.

The best Italian knitwear manufacturers are my customers. Hermes, the Parisian fashion house, also makes high quality printed knitwear with its classic designs. Their designers visit me and we study the new collection together. I take this opportunity to show them that famous printed leather – the result of my impromptu response at the party I gate-crashed!

Hermes’ young designers are very impressed with my idea, they find it to be a great, innovative, feature. Certainly of great interest to their House. They invite me to Paris to show my printed fantasy leather to the big bosses!

Then I plan a trip to Paris, I am as excited as a child! I love this feeling, it gives a special thrust to my creativity.

I am greeted very cordially and many words of wonder make me understand that is their intention to conclude an exclusive agreement very quickly! I realize that what started as a joke is resulting in some serious business… and once again, I know GOD loves me!

I fly back to Florence and, on the plane, I think and think about how I can capitalize on this idea. I cannot call it an invention, but it surely will change and expand the possibilities of the use of leather.

Leather as… fantasy… I can use my idea for light tight clothes… maybe even evening gowns. I’m dreaming… I know nothing about fashion… I’m an artist… designer who loves colors… BUT WHY NOT try to create a fashion collection in leather?

Fashion, it will open the door to opportunity… to meet beautiful models. I keep talking to myself. I took the decision after a few days of reflection I made the decision. “In a month’s time it will be the PRET A PORTER fashion show in Paris… the most important fashion exhibition… maybe there is still time… I can create a small collection… just a few pieces… to show off my new leather printing technique.”

Roberto Cavalli vintage I look for a leather-making factory… models will be very classic… after all the news is the printed leather. Two Blazers… two different forms… a vest… some dresses in different lengths… and shapes… a long evening dress… even a bathing suit… explore the possibilities!

Now what should I do? Continue?

I prefer to go gently… and have you read and reflect on my adventure…

65. L’adrenalina entra in circolo…

L’entusiasmo incomincia a mandarmi in circolo l’adrenalina e aumenta la mia positività!

La stamperia è un piccolo gioiello che mi sono creato con idee sempre più innovative. Sono stato il primo al mondo a stampare su pullover già confezionati e i miei disegni hanno il vantaggio, rispetto ad altre stampe, di modellare la siluette del corpo.

I migliori maglifici italiani sono miei clienti. Anche Hermes di Parigi fa stampare capi di maglieria di alto livello con i suoi classici disegni.
Ricevo la visita di alcuni designer della maison parigina. Studiamo insieme la nuova collezione e colgo l’occasione per mostrargli quella famosa pelle stampata – frutto di una mia divertente risposta dopo essermi imbucato a un party!

Anche i giovani stilisti di Hermes restano molto colpiti dalla mia idea, la trovarono una grande novità. Sicuramente di grande interesse per la maison. M’invitano a Parigi per mostrare la mia pelle stampata fantasia ai grandi capi!

Programmo quindi il viaggio a Parigi, sono eccitato come un bambino! Adoro queste sensazioni, sono quelle che danno quello stimolo speciale alla mia creatività.

Sono accolto con simpatia e le loro parole di stupore mi fanno capire che è loro intenzione stipulare molto velocemente un accordo di esclusiva! Mi rendo conto che da uno scherzo era nata una cosa seria… e ancora una volta, Dio mi voleva bene!

Rientro a Firenze e in aereo penso e ripenso a come avrei potuto sfruttare al meglio questa mia idea. Non la posso chiamare invenzione, ma sicuramente cambierà e allargherà’ le possibilità nell’uso della pelle.

Pelle come… pelle fantasia… potrò usare questa mia idea per abiti leggeri attillati… forse anche abiti da sera. Sto sognando… Non so niente di moda, sono un artista, un designer che ama i colori, MA PERCHE’ NON PROVARE a creare una collezione di moda in pelle?

La moda, mi aprirà la porta alla possibilità di conoscere belle modelle. Continuo a parlare a me stesso. Prendo la decisione dopo qualche giorno di riflessione. “Fra un mese ci sarà il PRET A PORTER a Parigi. La più importante esposizione della moda. Forse sono ancora in tempo! Potrei creare una piccola collezione, solo alcuni pezzi per mostrare la mia novità.”

Roberto Cavalli vintage Cerco un laboratorio per la lavorazione della pelle. I modelli dovranno essere molto classici, la novità è la stampa. Due modelli di Blazer… due forme diverse… un gilè… alcuni abiti di varie lunghezze e forme… un abito lungo da sera e perfino un costume da bagno. Devo esplorare le molteplici possibilità della mia idea!

Adesso cosa devo fare? Continuare?

Preferisco continuare dolcemente… lasciarvi il tempo per leggere e riflettere della mia avventura…
