69. The return to my natural environment, the sky!
My partner and I decided to spend Easter having a complete rest, which I really need.

Destination Dubai, we shall stay at the hotel we normally stay at so we shall feel at home. We will spend our evenings at the Cavalli Club. I have already described the Cavalli Club in Dubai and I could continue indefinitely to talk about all the features of this fantastic place. In everyday language it is “pretty cool!” The environment is amazing… the food “THE BEST”… from midnight on… the most beautiful music… the most beautiful girls in the world!

Furthermore, when I am at the Cavalli Club in Dubai I feel important, served and revered. After so much concentrated work with my head down I need to relax.

I’m surprised by the excitement of the people who, with hesitation, ask me for a photo. The beautiful girls show off all their confidence… I enjoy feeling their arm around my waist as we wait for the flash. Sometimes they tickle my back to stimulate my attention… and my intention…

We spend the first two days exploring the desert… we rent a car and, after three hours of travel, arrive at a big “OASIS”… around us, only desert!

The sand is golden, completely different from the red sand of the Namibian desert… every room of the hotel is an elevated bungalow with a commanding view of the desert… Oriental décor… very stylish… a heated knife-edge swimming pool creates the illusion of flowing out into the desert beyond!

Hoping to spend two days of sun and walks… Fortune, however, is furious with my tranquility. I have never seen it rain before in the desert!
We have to lock ourselves in the SPA and have every kind of treatment, including the four hands one!

Returning to Dubai we find a hot sun and we can finally begin to tan!

CAVALLI CLUB… great night… a round table has been prepared for me in the center of the club with four bottles of CAVALLI VODKA 20 liters.

I am the center of attention, even if someone doesn’t know who I am … oysters and caviar… a little foie-gras and some raw fish… mouth-watering? Beautiful girls surround my table trying to make eye contact… blondes… redheads… brunettes…

The highlight of the evening is when I stand up and announce the guest of honor: “LADIES AND GENTLEMEN, I HAVE THE HONOR TO INTRODUCE LEONA LEWIS!”… She goes up onto the stage… she is stunning in a dress that molds itself to her body as she moves. Her beautiful voice is with us for the rest of the evening.

Leona and I have known one another for some time. I had the pleasure of admiring the color of her feline eyes at the big party in celebration of the forty years of Roberto Cavalli fashion house in Paris. Before leaving Leona comes over to my table and we hug. I am really pleased to see her again!

69. Il ritorno al mio ambiente naturale, il cielo!
Con la mia compagna abbiamo deciso di trascorrere la Pasqua in completo riposo, ne ho veramente bisogno.

Destinazione Dubai, alloggeremo nell’hotel che normalmente ci ospita. Ci sentiremo come a casa. Trascorreremo le nostre serate al Cavalli Club. Vi ho già descritto Il Cavalli Club di Dubai e potrei continuare a decantarvi all’infinito tutte le peculiarità di questo fantastico locale. Volgarmente parlando potrei definirlo “una figata!” L’ambiente è incredibile… il cibo “THE BEST”… dalla mezzanotte… la più bella musica… le più belle ragazze del mondo!

Inoltre, quando sono al Cavalli Club di Dubai, mi sento importante, servito e riverito. Dopo tanto lavoro a testa bassa sento il bisogno di riposarmi.

Mi sorprende l’eccitazione della gente che con esitazione mi chiede una foto. Le belle ragazze sfoggiano tutta la loro sicurezza… mi diverte sentire il loro braccio che stringe la mia vita in attesa del flash. Talvolta mi solleticano la schiena per stimolare la mia attenzione… e le mie intenzioni…

Abbiamo trascorso i primi due giorni esplorando il deserto… abbiamo noleggiato una macchina e dopo oltre tre ore di viaggio siamo arrivati in una grande “OASI”… intorno a noi solo deserto!

La sabbia è di un colore beige dorato, completamente diverso dal colore rosso del deserto della Namibia… ogni camera dell’hotel in cui alloggiamo è un bungalow in posizione elevata che dominava il deserto… arredamento orientale, molto raffinato… una bella piscina riscaldata dava l’illusione ottica di gettarsi nella sabbia!

Speravo di poter trascorrere due giorni di solo sole e passeggiate. La sfortuna si è però accanita con la mia tranquillità. Non avevo mai visto piovere nel deserto! Siamo stati costretti a rinchiuderci nella SPA e fare ogni tipo di trattamento, compreso quello a quattro mani!

Rientrando a Dubai abbiamo trovato ad attenderci un sole caldissimo, possiamo finalmente iniziare ad abbronzarci!

CAVALLI CLUB… grande serata… mi hanno preparato un tavolo tondo nel centro del locale con quattro bottiglie di VODKA CAVALLI da 20 litri.

Sono al centro dell’attenzione, anche se qualcuno non sa chi sono… ostriche e caviale… un po’ di fois gras… pesce crudo… vi faccio venire l’acquolina in bocca? Bellissime ragazze circondavano il mio tavolo cercando di incrociare il mio sguardo… bionde… more… rosse…

Il momento clou della serata è quando mi alzo e annuncio l’ospite d’onore: “LADIES AND GENTLEMEN, I HAVE THE HONOR TO INTRODUCE LEONA LEWIS!”… eccola salire sul palco, bellissima, in un abito che le fascia il corpo. La sua splendida voce ci accompagna per il resto della serata.

Conosco Leona da diverso tempo. Avevo avuto il piacere di ammirare il colore felino dei suoi occhi alla grande festa per i quaranta anni della maison Roberto Cavalli a Parigi. Prima di abbandonare il locale Leona viene al mio tavolo ad abbracciarmi. Mi ha fatto veramente piacere rivederla!

La giornata è finita, a domani.

68. A Collection Based Solely on Leather…

68. A collection based solely on leather is clearly not sufficient.

Jeans are my favorite piece. I must find a way to present them in a new and different way. This might be the right idea to revive an amazing garment.

I buy a certain number of used jeans, widely used, at the market in Florence. Some are heavily worn. Their beauty lies in their subtle color differences. Each pair of jeans is of different denim and ages in a different way.

I cut out strips from the jeans excluding the main seams and keeping the pockets intact. Using a paper model I then cut new jeans in various shades made of pieces of the old jeans. I re-use the pockets of the old jeans and I cover the worn parts and mistakes with my leather printed in different colors and patterns.

Now I am really pleased! I carefully critique my work and I get excited… with my own ideas! This time I leave for Paris with a different collection. The customers who visit my booth immediately show more interest.

A good collection is perceived immediately and the news spreads quickly like wildfire, like a Tom Tom. Within hours, word of mouth transmits and amplifies it from customer to customer. The next morning, at the opening of the stand, I have many clients who are waiting for me! We are not prepared to face so much excitement!

It is as true today as it was yesterday – fashion needs something new, something different!

The boutiques and the buyers are competing for an exclusive on my new collection. My confidence in what I have accomplished is reflected in my decisions and my answers!

This is the beginning of something important… a success unknown to me before… from the very first moment I love it… I know immediately, intuitively, that I must take this in very small doses… like a mighty miracle drug!

This is the story of my beginning, but my adventure continues with many stories that will seem at first implausible, even impossible!

68. Una collezione basata unicamente su capi in pelle non è sufficiente.

I jeans sono il mio capo preferito, devo trovare una soluzione per presentarli in una versione nuova e diversa. Questa potrebbe essere l’idea giusta per rivitalizzare questo incredibile capo di abbigliamento.

Compro una certa quantità di jeans usati, molto usati, al mercatino di Firenze. Alcuni sono molto consumati, la bellezza sta nella caratteristica differenza di colore. Ogni jeans è di un denim diverso ed è invecchiato in modo diverso.

Taglio le strisce principali dei jeans escludendo le cuciture e mantenendo intatte le tasche. Con il modello di carta creo un nuovo jeans composto dai pezzi dei vecchi jeans con varie tonalità di colore. Utilizzo le tasche dei vecchi jeans e copro le malefatte e le parti più usurate con la mia pelle, stampata con colori e fantasie diverse.

Questa volta sì che sono soddisfatto! Sono io che critico il mio lavoro e mi entusiasmo… delle mie idee! Questa volta parto per Parigi con una collezione diversa. I clienti che visitano il mio stand dimostrano subito un certo interesse.

Una buona collezione è percepita immediatamente e la notizia si diffonde velocemente come un Tam Tam. In poche ore il passaparola si trasmette e si amplifica fra i clienti. La mattina seguente, all’apertura dello stand, trovo diversi clienti ad attendermi! Non siamo preparati per fronteggiare un tal entusiasmo!

Oggi come Ieri la moda ha bisogno di qualcosa di nuovo, di diverso!

Le boutique e i buyers si contendono l’esclusiva della mia nuova collezione. La fiducia in ciò che ho realizzato si riflette nelle mie decisioni e nelle mie risposte!

E’ l’inizio di qualcosa che non conoscevo, il successo!
Mi è piaciuto subito, fin dal primo momento. Ho capito subito che avrei dovuto prenderlo a piccole dosi, come una forte medicina miracolosa!

Questa è la storia del mio inizio, ma la mia avventura continua con tantissime storie che vi sembreranno inverosimili, se non impossibili!

67. By February, in The Following Season…

67. By February, in the following season, the collection had already acquired its own style. The prints were easier and everything seemed more real. I also hired some young people to help me in Paris.

I had abandoned the idea of getting into fashion so as to have a better chance with the models.

Now the reason for my presence in fashion had changed. I was enjoying myself creating designs that I thought of as my art-form.

I studied art, I always breathed art and my art could be my fashion!

February 1971, I receive many, many compliments, but the order book continues to be empty… compared to the first season, I am much more nervous… It is a failure…
I will not and can not consider myself as a “no win”.

I spend my evenings in Paris, with my closest friends, without even thinking about the models who are around me all day! The same Florentine boy, who used to spend some time with the American tourists in Piazza Signoria in Florence, is beginning to become quite serious!

I spend my days creating. I’m not worried about shaping or style. I have an Englishman in my team who is helping me. I am looking for a way to make my printed leather more special… less flat… I have to teach her to talk… move… I have to breathe life into her!

In my experiments I am printing thousands of pieces of leather in many different designs and many different colors, from black to red to white, through every range of color possible!

I like the entire set of the prints… I gather all the pieces of leather together and, closing my eyes, I begin to choose them one at a time in a completely random… spontaneous… way.
I am pleased, but I do not know how to make concrete this colored rain. I want others to share this experience, this emotion.

COLOR IS LIFE!

Each piece of leather is cut into small squares and then sewn one to the other… spontaneity becomes fantasy… I create many sheets of one meter by one meter… I cut a small garment… a blouson… a vest…

I like them, but they are a bit “too strong”… I have to keep the garments in the collection softer and more wearable…
I cut a blazer from a blue not-so-well-died leather to which I added pockets, lapels, small strips at the ends of the sleeves, these details I cut from the previously made leather patchwork.

Now I am happy! The collection begin to take shape, but there is still something that can make it even more special…

I hope you are going to forgive me… It ‘s an important story, and I cannot offer it to you on a silver plate – I want you to taste it slowly… savour it… as I did!

67. La stagione successiva, a febbraio, la collezione aveva assunto un suo stile, le stampe erano più facili e tutto mi sembrava più reale. Avevo anche assunto alcuni ragazzi per aiutarmi a Parigi.

Avevo abbandonato l’idea di fare moda per avere più chance con le modelle.

La ragione della mia presenza nella moda era cambiata, mi divertiva creare disegni che consideravo la mia forma di arte.

Ho studiato arte, ho sempre respirato arte e la mia arte poteva essere la mia moda!

Febbraio 1971, riscuoto tanti, tantissimi complimenti, ma il carnet degli ordini continua a essere vuoto! Rispetto alla prima stagione, sono molto più nervoso. E’ un insuccesso!
Non riesco e non posso considerarmi un “non vincente”.

Trascorro le mie serate a Parigi, con i miei amici più cari e senza minimamente pensare alle modelle che mi giravano intorno per tutta la giornata! Quel ragazzo fiorentino, che passava parte del suo tempo con le turiste americane in Piazza Signoria a Firenze, incominciava a diventare quasi serio!

Trascorro le mie giornate a creare. Non mi preoccupa la modellatura o lo style, ho un ragazzo inglese nel mio team che mi aiuta in questo. Sono alla ricerca di come rendere la mia pelle stampata più speciale… meno piatta… devo insegnarle a parlare… muoversi… devo darle vita!

In tutti i miei esperimenti ho stampato migliaia di pelli in tanti disegni differenti e tanti colori diversi, dal nero al rosso al bianco, attraverso ogni gamma di colore possibile!

Mi piace l’insieme di tutte le stampe. Riunisco tutte le pelli e chiudendo gli occhi inizio a sceglierle, una alla volta, in modo del tutto casuale… spontaneo…
Sono soddisfatto, ma non so come rendere concreta questa pioggia colorata, voglio far provare ad altri la mia stessa emozione.

IL COLORE E’ VITA!

Ogni pelle è quindi tagliata in piccoli quadratini di pochi centimetri che sono poi cuciti uno accanto all’altro. La spontaneità diventa fantasia! Creo tanti teli di un metro per un metro. Taglio qualche piccolo capo, un blouson… un gilè…

Mi piacevano, ma erano “troppo forti”, dovevo continuare la collezione con capi più soft e più facilmente indossabili… Taglio, in un modello blazer, una pelle blue maltinta a cui aggiungo le tasche, il revers, piccole strisce sul finale delle maniche, tutti questi particolari sono realizzati con parte dei miei teli a quadratini multicolori.

Ora sono soddisfatto! La Collezione incomincia a prendere forma, ma mancava ancora qualche cosa che potesse renderla ancora più speciale…
