118. Saint Tropez, a film I recommend… A film from mid July to late August… a reflection, day and night, in the eyes of those lucky enough to be moored in the harbor.

Thousands of people passing in front of the boats stop… look inside… take pictures with their cellphones…

Beautiful girls… mini-skirts with high heels… dizzying tans…!

We are about to enter the harbor… my commander begins the manoeuver… the sailors are already in place… the boat approaches the dock… The onlookers, fans, are starting to crowd around. There is also a television crew on the dock who encourage me to go down for an interview… I enjoy watching and being watched… but a bit of shyness overcomes me… I hide in my room… I’m sorry to leave the film…. but after all I already know the ending!

I wait until my audience thins out, then I take Lupo out for his evening walk.

Good to be in Saint Tropez, the atmosphere is special, unique… lots of laughter… fun…

For months I had planned this little cruise with three couples. It was during a dinner at the Just Cavalli in Milan, we decided to meet again on the boat. Saint Tropez would make us feel young again… in search of adventure!

This evening we decide not to dine on the boat… but rather to dive into the nightlife of Saint Tropez! Maybe I am exaggerating … I think it will be more fun to be back on the boat watching the sequel to the film, Saint Tropez by night!

118. Saint Tropez, Un Film che Consiglio…

118. Saint Tropez, un film che consiglio… Un film che da metà luglio fino a fine Agosto si presenta giorno e notte agli occhi di chi ha la fortuna di essere ormeggiato nel porto.

Le migliaia di persone che passano davanti alla barca si fermano… guardano dentro… fanno le foto con il cellulare…

Ragazze bellissime… minigonne con tacchi altissimi… abbronzature da capogiro…!

Stiamo per entrare nel porto, il mio comandante incomincia la manovra, i marinai sono già in posizione e la barca si avvicina alla banchina… I curiosi, i fans incominciano a far ressa, c’è anche una televisione che mi incita a scendere… mi diverte guardare e farmi guardare… ma un po’ di timidezza mi assale, mi nascondo in camera… mi dispiace abbandonare il film…. ma dopotutto ne conosco già il finale!

Aspetto che si sfoltisca il mio pubblico, voglio scendere per portare Lupo a fare la sua passeggiata serale.

Che bello essere a Saint Tropez, l’atmosfera è speciale, unica… tanta voglia di ridere… di divertirsi…

Da mesi avevo programmato questa piccola crociera con tre coppie di amici. Durante una bella cena al Just Cavalli a Milano abbiamo deciso di ritrovarci in barca, Saint Tropez ci avrebbe fatto sentire ragazzi in cerca di avventure!

Roberto, you’re great! I have been a fan of Roberto Benigni ever since the first moment I came across a number of his parodies, acted in a barn, when television was still black and white.

Every week I waited for him to continue his fun. At that time it was unusual for people to perform with a Florentine accent and so it amused me doubly. His success has spread like wildfire. I wondered if Italians, from outside of Tuscany, could fully understand his breezy, purely Florentine humor. Then I understood. Roberto is a major international artist!

Yesterday morning I received a short message from Matteo Renzi, Florence’s great young mayor. He announced that until August 6, Roberto Benigni would be reciting and explaining the Divine Comedy in the wonderful atmosphere of the Piazza Santa Croce and would be happy to meet me!

DEFINETELY YES! I was in Milan but returned in the afternoon. I could not miss Roberto Benigni explaining the Divine Commedy under the statue of Dante Alighieri. It was an opportunity not to be missed… In the company of my friend Matteo Renzi whom I love and admire more and more!

Piazza Santa Croce was lit up in a most artistic way (art in Florence is always in the air…)

It was a great pleasure to meet so many friends I had not seen for some time, great actors and actresses from television. All were drawn by the spectacular event that Florence and Roberto Benigni were to offer in the uniquely beautiful setting of the Piazza Santa Croce!

With me was my son Daniele with whom I was happy to spend such a magical evening!

Roberto’s entrance and introduction were unmistakable… I remember the night of the Oscars when, at the moment his name was announced as a winner he stood up screaming, jumping from the top of one seat to another as a shortcut to the stage, showing his joy!

His initial comments on the politics, the current government polices and the possible return of Berlusconi were hilarious. Alfano may be moved to tears of emotion, but for the rest of us… there were tears of “gran dolore”.

“The Divine Comedy” in the words of Roberto Benigni regains the grandeur and charm that each of us left behind on our high school desks!

117. Roberto, Sei Grande!

Roberto, sei grande! Sono un fan di Roberto Benigni dal primo momento che mi è capitato di imbattermi su alcune parodie che recitava in una stalla, quando la televisione era ancora in bianco e nero.

Lo aspettavo ogni settimana per continuare a divertirmi. Allora non si sentiva spesso recitare in fiorentino e la cosa mi divertiva doppiamente. Il suo successo si allargò a macchia d’olio. Mi chiedevo come gli italiani, al di fuori della toscana, potessero capire il suo spigliato umorismo prettamente fiorentino. In seguito ho capito. Roberto è un grande artista internazionale!

Ieri mattina ho ricevuto un messaggino da Matteo Renzi, il giovane grande sindaco di Firenze. Mi annuncia che da ieri fino al 6 di Agosto, Roberto Benigni recitava e spiegava la Divina Commedia nella meravigliosa atmosfera di Piazza Santa Croce e sarebbe stato felice di incontrarmi!

Sicuramente SI! Ero a Milano ma sono rientrato nel pomeriggio. Non potevo perdere Roberto Benigni che spiegava La Commedia da sotto la statua di Dante Alighieri una occasione da non perdere… In compagnia dell’amico Matteo Renzi che amo e stimo sempre di più!

È stato un enorme piacere incontrare tanti amici che non vedevo da tempo, grandi attrici e attori della televisione. Tutti attratti dallo spettacolare evento che Firenze e Roberto Benigni ci stavano per offrire in una cornice dalla bellezza unica come Piazza Santa Croce!

Matteo Renzi in compagnia della sua bella moglie ha fatto gli onori di casa.

Con me c’è mio figlio Daniele, sono felice di poter trascorrere in sua compagnia una serata così magica!

L’ingresso di Roberto e i suoi saluti sono inconfondibili… mi torna in mente la serata degli Oscar quando, al momento che fu pronunziato il suo nome si alzò in piedi urlando e saltando da una poltrona all’altra come in una scorciatoia per arrivare sul palco, dimostrando così la sua gioia!

Il suo commento iniziale sulla politica, sull’attuale governo e sul rientro in politica di Berlusconi è stato fantastico ha commosso Alfano e fatto piangere tutti noi non per commozione ma per… il “gran dolore”.

“La Divina Commedia” riacquista nelle parole di Roberto Benigni quella grandezza e fascino che ognuno di noi ha lasciato sui banchi del liceo!

GRAZIE ROBERTO BENIGNI per avercii fatto sorridere… sognare… esaltare!

116. Reckless or Fearless…

Reckless or Fearless… probably both!

These are days of intense work before going to enjoy myself on the Bat-zodiac in the Mediterranean. I want to complete my projects and have so many ideas that I do not want to risk forgetting them!

I have two collections coming at the end of September, which make me nervous… I commit more than ever!

When I am working so hard in this way there is a limit to what I can tell you. So I will tell you some adventure from the past…!

Dayana Mendoza – Venezuela – Miss Universe 2008

I was invited to serve on the jury for the Miss Universe contest in Vietnam… four days of good fun… but not great… now I am on my way back home. The sea and nature are very beautiful – but not enviable! Our wonderful Sardinia remains the queen!

Before returning to Italy, I remember a dinner with Eddie Irvine the former Ferrari driver. Do you remember him? Eddy is still young, but during dinner he has to read something and starts complaining that his eyesight is not what it once was… “MY FATHER STILL READS WITHOUT GLASSES… IT MAKES ME SO ENVIOUS!” He explains that his father had an eye operation in Thailand, in Bangkok from one of the ablest and best professors in the world!

He got my attention… for 25 years I have been a slave to astigmatism and presbyopia… using bifocals glasses and different contact lenses in my eyes!

Returning from Vietnam, I decide to stop and get to know this great doctor who teaches you to read without glasses – rejuvenating the eyes! I telephone and make an appointment at the hospital which is about an hour from Bangkok.

The organization of this “Luminary” sends a limo to meet me at the airport! The Bangkok Hospital seems like a large five-star hotel. Four young ladies and an Italian interpreter greet me and accompany me to the ophthalmology department.

I meet Dr. Sonchai, a small Thai man with black hair and a long white coat, his team who follow him few meters behind greet me with a nod of their heads. They were waiting for me.

Have you ever been to an ophthalmologist? He tests me to see how well I read up-close and at a distance… many small colored lights in my eyes… drops to dilate my pupils… at the end he begins to explain the procedure. Its action is to open the eyes and insert lenses that will allow me read well up close and at a distance without glasses! The only problem is this will not allow me to read well at a distance of about one meter, typical when using a computer…

The great Thai doctor explains in great detail the little problems that I shall encounter… I know the benefits, I SHALL BE ABLE TO THROW AWAY MY GLASSES!

I lock myself away in a room to reflect… think… decide… I am here… it’s worth a try!

OK! I agree!

The operating room is ready… They show me the room, where I will spend a short postoperative period. A beautiful suite, but I am not going to stay there long…

I put on a green operating gown, suddenly realizing that this is a serious operation in all respects and involving anesthesia!

No, I regret nothing… right now I am writing this post without glasses!

Which won…? My recklessness or my fearlessness?

116. Incoscienza o Un Esagerata Mancanza di Paura…

Incoscienza o un esagerata mancanza di paura… probabilmente entrambe!

Questi sono giorni di lavoro molto intensi, prima di andare a godermi il mediterraneo con il Bat-gommone voglio completare i miei progetti e ho tante idee che non voglio correre il rischio di dimenticare!

Le due sfilate che dovrò affrontare alla fine di settembre mi impegnano e mi innervosiscono più di sempre!

Quando il lavoro va oltre il limite nelle mie giornate non esistono avventure che posso raccontarvi. Quindi vi racconterò qualche avventura passata…!

Sto rientrando dal Vietnam, sono stato invitato a far parte della giuria per Miss Universo… quattro giorni abbastanza divertenti, ma non eccezionali! Il mare e la natura sono molto belli, ma non invidiabili! La nostra meravigliosa Sardegna rimane sempre la regina!

Prima di tornare in Italia, mi sono ricordato di una cena con Eddy Irvine, ex pilota Ferrari. Ve lo ricordate? Eddy è ancora giovane ma durante la cena gli capita di dover leggere e si lamenta del fatto che la sua vista non è più quella di una volta… “MIO PAPA’ LEGGE SENZA OCCHIALI… MI FA TANTA RABBIA…!” Mi spiega che suo padre ha fatto una operazione agli occhi in Tailandia, a Bangkok da uno dei professori più abili e migliori al mondo!

Rizzo le orecchie… sono venticinque anni che sono schiavo di astigmatismo e presbiopia… uso lenti bifocali e a contatto, diverse nei due occhi!

Rientrando dal Vietnam, decisi di fermarmi a conoscere questo grande dottore che faceva rileggere senza occhiali, ringiovanendo gli occhi! Telefono e prendo un appuntamento all’ospedale di Bangkok, distante circa un’ora dalla città.

L’organizzazione del “Luminare” mi manda una Limo all’aeroporto! L’Ospedale di Bangkok sembra un enorme Hotel a cinque stelle. Sono accolto da quattro signorine e da un interprete italiano che mi accompagnano nella sezione di oculistica.

Mi viene incontro il Dott. Sonchai, un piccolo uomo tailandese, capelli neri ed un lungo camice bianco, una folta equipe lo segue a pochi metri e mi salutano con un cenno della testa. Mi stavano aspettando.

Siete mai stati da un oculista? Leggere a distanza… da vicino… tante piccole lucine colorate negli occhi… gocce per dilatare le pupille… e alla fine incomincia a spiegarmi la procedura. Il suo intervento consiste nell’aprire l’occhio e inserire una lente che mi permetterà di vedere bene da lontano e leggere da vicino, senza occhiali! L’unico problema, può essere leggere a distanza di un metro, tipico di quando si usa il computer…

Il grande dottore tailandese, mi spiega molto dettagliatamente i piccoli problemi che avrei incontrato… i vantaggi li conoscevo, AVREI BUTTATO VIA GLI OCCHIALI!

Mi sono chiuso in una stanza a riflettere… pensare… decidere…! Oramai sono qui… vale la pena tentare!

OK! Accetto!

La sala operatoria è già pronta… mi fanno vedere la mia stanza, dove avrei trascorso il breve periodo post-operatorio. Una bellissima suite, ma non avevo intenzione di rimanerci a lungo…

Mi infilano un mega camicione verde, non mi ero reso conto che sarebbe stata una vera e propria operazione a tutti gli effetti inclusa l’anestesia totale!

No, non sono pentito di averla fatta, forse, decisamente incosciente!
In questo momento vi sto scrivendo senza occhiali!

Ha vinto la mia incoscienza o la mia sicurezza?
