34. No anxiety and emotion shines from my eyes or my movements, I switch from one model to another to check the makeup and hair
A swarm of photographers armed with cameras follow my every move!
All eyes are on me, awe and admiration. Some dressers and hairdressers pluck up courage and approach to ask for a photo. I am easy going and have a kind word for everyone! Perhaps my natural, accessible way encourages my fans to approach and open up to me!

They are calling me for the television interviews. My press office staff is doing a great job trying to contain the exuberance of the cameras crews.
Massimo, my communications manager does the honors of the house and helps me translate a few words from the English, which I don’t quite get. Benedetta looks after me offering water after each interview. Nadia supervises and is gentle when the situation becomes a little tense! I change language often, French, almost all in English, Italian for the various national TV channels!

To find the right word to describe the collection seems difficult during the first interviews. Alternating smiles and quips. I must show my fantastic collection. I must not appear tired.
My words and my eyes must express all my joy at being a BIG of the fashion world!

I begin to get nervous – we are delayed twenti minutes. I leave the journalists and run to see if the models are ready and if everything is going well.
I prefer to control everything myself. The anxiety begins to show in my thoughts and movements. I do not answer the questions and my attention is divided between the public who are taking their places and the models who are getting into line waiting to be pushed out onto catwalk.

25 minutes late?! I’m increasingly nervous and I ask Massimo if Suzy Menkes is here and seated. Suzy is the top fashion journalist. I particularly want her presence and also her comments in the International Herald Tribune the next day.

The lights go out at last it seems that the JUST CAVALLI show is about to begin.
A few seconds of darkness, seems an eternity!

34. Nessuna ansia ed emozione traspaiono dal mio sguardo e dai miei movimenti, passo da una modella all’altra per vedere il trucco e i capelli
Uno sciame di fotografi e telecamere mi segue in ogni mio movimento!
Tutti gli sguardi sono su di me. Sguardi di timore e ammirazione, qualche ragazza, fra le vestieriste e parrucchiere, si fa coraggio e si avvicina per chiedermi una foto, io sono gentile e ho una parola dolce per tutti!
Forse è proprio da questo mio spontaneo modo di farmi avvicinare che suscito un’aperta simpatia fra i miei fans!

Mi chiamano per le interviste televisive, i miei collaboratori dell’ufficio stampa cercano di trattenere l’ingombro e l’irruenza delle telecamere e dei tecnici, sono bravissimi!
Massimo, il mio manager della comunicazione, fa gli onori di casa e mi traduce qualche parola dall’inglese se mi appare incomprensibile. Benedetta, mi coccola offrendomi dopo ogni intervista la bottiglia dell’acqua. Nadia, sorveglia e appare dolcemente quando la situazione diventa più difficile!
Devo alternare le mie risposte tra francese, inglese e italiano per i canali televisivi nazionali!

Le prime interviste mi sembrano difficili, trovare le giuste parole per descrivere la collezione, alternando sorrisi e qualche battuta divertente. Devo apparire non stanco nel mostrare la mia “fantastica” collezione.
Le mie parole e i miei occhi devono dimostrare tutta la mia gioia di essere un BIG del pianeta moda!

Incomincio a innervosirmi, siamo in ritardo di venti minuti, lascio i giornalisti e corro a vedere se le modelle sono già pronte e se tutto procede bene.
Preferisco controllare tutto personalmente. L’ansia incomincia a riprendere spazio nei miei pensieri e movimenti. Non rispondo alle domande e i miei occhi si dividono fra il pubblico che sta prendendo posto e le modelle che incominciano a mettersi in fila in attesa di essere spinte in passerella.

25 minuti di ritardo?! Sono sempre più nervoso e chiedo a Massimo se Suzy Menkes è già arrivata e seduta. Suzy è la giornalista top della moda, ci tengo particolarmente alla sua presenza e ai suoi commenti del giorno dopo sull’International Herald Tribune.

Le luci si spengono finalmente sembra che la sfilata JUST CAVALLI stia per incominciare.
Qualche secondo di buio mi sembra un’eternità!

33. My day began earlier than usual…

33. My day began earlier than usual, a slight sun has finally broken the terrible cold that has had us in its grip until yesterday! I’m running to the showroom, I am always late. The fitting of Just Cavalli is waiting for me. To be more precise, at least ten models are already waiting for the fitting before tomorrow’s fashion show.

Lupo hardly keeps up with me!
Roberto… I hear someone calling my name with a strong American accent. Rushing along has dimmed my eyes so I do not see this beautiful blonde woman! She is Susan Plagemann, Vice President and Publisher of Vogue, a special person whom I admire for her beauty and simpatia!
Two kisses in great haste with the promise to see one another tomorrow at the Just Cavalli fashion show.
Many models are sitting on couches. The fitting has started without me! We had already chosen the dresses to assign to each model yesterday. Today we have the rehearsal and the latest corrections to be made on almost all of the dresses.
Something to change, a jacket to replace, a skirt to shorten, or perhaps I should say lot of skirts to shorten! All the skirts seem too long to me… Just Cavalli is a youthful line so I would rather have the skirts pretty short!

When we are all confident that each garment to be worn by a model is perfect, the photographer takes a picture that is attached to a panel where it serves as a reference.

I spend all day with so many beautiful models all of whom are trying on the clothes for the Fashion Show. Lupo is crouched under a table where he accepts the compliments and caresses people give him!

Well, almost everything is done now. Fatigue is combined with the anxiety of the day before the show. It is already very late. I walk home with Lupo.
No dinner out and no party! Tomorrow I shall be in great shape to face the Fashion photographers and the TV professionals from around the world!

33. La giornata è incominciata prima del solito, un leggero sole ha finalmente interrotto quel terribile freddo che ci ha attanagliato fino a ieri! Sto correndo allo showroom, sono sempre in ritardo. Il fitting di Just Cavalli mi aspetta. Per essere più preciso, almeno dieci modelle mi stanno già aspettando per il fitting della sfilata di domani.

Lupo quasi non tiene il mio passo!
Roberto… Sento pronunciare il mio nome con un forte accento americano. Il ritardo mi offuscava gli occhi al punto di non notare una bella ragazza bionda! E’ Susan Plagemann, Vice President e Publisher di Vogue, una persona speciale che ammiro per la sua bellezza e simpatia!
Due bacini in grande fretta con la promessa di vedersi domani alla sfilata Just Cavalli.

Tante modelline erano sedute sui divani. Avevano iniziato Il fitting senza di me! La scelta dei capi da destinare a ogni modella l’avevamo già fatta ieri. Oggi ci sono le prove e le ultime correzioni da fare in quasi tutti i capi.
Qualche cosa da cambiare, una giacca da sostituire, una gonna da scorciare, o forse è meglio dire, molte gonne da scorciare! Mi sembravano tutte troppo lunghe…, Just Cavalli è una linea giovane e preferisco le gonne abbastanza short!

Quando siamo tutti sicuri che il capo, indossato dalla modella è perfetto il fotografo scatta una foto che viene attaccata su di un pannello e serve come riferimento.

Tutta la giornata trascorre con tante belle modelle che provano gli abiti per la sfilata. Lupo è accucciato sotto un tavolo, mi sembra quasi annoiato da tutti i complimenti e carezze che ogni persona gli dedica!

Bene, quasi tutto fatto, la stanchezza si unisce all’ansia del giorno prima. E’ già tardissimo, m’incammino verso di casa in compagnia di Lupo.
No cene e no party! Domani dovrò essere in gran forma per affrontare i fotografi e le televisioni di tutto il mondo!

Here in New York the Stars are more important than the designers. The camera flashes are all for them.
As it is Milan so it is Paris, the only difference been for Italian and French designers having a Star in the front row at our show can be absurdly expensive, with private plane (depending on importance) hotel and cachet all sky high.
Only the big names like Gucci and Louis Vuitton can afford the big Stars!
In New York it is different. The costs are lower and the Top Models require a cachet that is half of what it is expected in Italy! I’ve never understood why!
The Stars in America are best friends with the designers.They live like neighbors in the same city.

The most seen Star at the NY Fashion week was Jessica Alba.
Matt Damon was at the Mark Jacobs show.
Leighton Meester, Natalie Portman, Ivanka Trump and Adriana Lima were present at many shows.

I met Uma Thurman at the Narciso Rodriguez fashion show, she embraced me with great sympathy and friendship.
I invited her to my show in Milan.
She said that she was busy shooting a fantastic movie, promising that I shall really like it. “I’m sure” I replied reciprocating her sweet embrace!

I would like to share with many details of a small pre-dinner party last night.
I’m not a writer so do not feel up to being able to describe every detail.
Sure, I wanted to have my camera with me to catch the simpatiche follie (sympathetic follies) of fashion.

I never understood why so many young designers, especially Americans, dress themselves up so absurdly in an effort to to bring out their personality style!
I find it amusing and sometimes a little degrading for the fashion world to which they belong!

In a few days the great zoos of fashion will moved to Milan.
Two main dates the first Friday 24 JUST CAVALLI and then Monday 27 ROBERTO CAVALLI.

I’ll be a star, I’ll play my part and the fear of not being up to what the fashion world expects of me is great!

Only your warmth and affection give me so much creativity…

Qui a New York le Stars sono più importanti dei designers, i flash sono tutti per loro.
Come a Milano e Parigi, con la sola differenza che a noi stilisti italiani o francesi avere una Star in prima fila al nostro show costa una cifra assurda. Viaggio in aereo privato (dipende dall’importanza), hotel e un cachet spesso alto.
Solo i grandi nomi come Gucci e Louis Vuitton si possono permettere le grandi Stars!

A New York è diverso, i costi sono più contenuti e anche le modelle, le Top Model sfilano con un cachet dimezzato rispetto all’Italia! Non ne ho mai compresa la ragione! Le Stars in America sono grandi amiche dei designers, vivono nella stessa città e quindi è rutto più facile.

Ho incontrato Uma Thurman al défilé di Narciso Rodriguez, mi ha abbracciato con molta simpatia e amicizia. L’ho invitata al mio show a Milano, mia ha risposto che è impegnatissima in un film fantastico, mi ha promesso che mi piacerà molto . “NE SONO CERTO” le ho risposto contraccambiando il suo dolcissimo abbraccio!

Vorrei raccontarvi con tanti particolari di un piccolo party pre-dinner di ieri sera.
Non sono uno scrittore e non mi sento all’altezza per potervi descrivere in modo adeguato ogni dettaglio. Certo, avrei voluto avere con me una macchina da presa per riprendere le simpatiche follie della moda.

Non ho mai capito perché molti giovani designers, specialmente americani, per evidenziare la loro personalità stilistica, si vestono o si acconciano in maniera assurda! Lo trovo divertente, ma spesso degradante per il mondo al quale appartengo !

Fra pochi giorni il grande zoo della moda si trasferisce a Milano, per ben due volte, prima venerdì 24 con JUST CAVALLI e poi lunedì 27 con ROBERTO CAVALLI.

Sarò un protagonista, reciterò la mia parte e il timore di non essere all’altezza di quanto il mondo della moda si aspetta da me è grande!

Solo il vostro calore e affetto mi danno tanta creatività…
