I photographed everything I liked, everything that intrigued me.

Then, when I returned to Florence, I shut myself in my darkroom for hours and hours, developing and printing. I had built a real photo studio in an outbuilding in the garden with all kinds of imaginable equipment.

In my print shop where I was printing on fabrics, I tried to achieve the same effects with the fabrics that I was getting with my photos! It was a game, endlessly fascinating, but a hobby that while it amused me it also offers me an insight into what could be accomplished and help me in the future.

I ended up with a huge photo archive, full of ideas for my future collections.

I slowed down the pace of my work to allow myself more time with my family. We devoted ourselves to our private life, though I never really stopped thinking about the evolution and changes I could make in my companies.

I was slightly falling out of love with my work, but I was not sure what was wrong and what to do. In a way I was glad not to have to submit to the new rules of fashion, they were beginning to make everything too organized, too politicized.

I didn’t like the routine and the new turn of events that was taking over fashion. Industrialized processes were accelerating more and more and this was ruining creativity.

It was as if I refused to be part of the system and want to remain a young, creative designer with freedom without limitations.

The same person who had refused to take the exam at the Academy… I grew up on the street like many young people of my time there and I wanted to go on living! A nomad. A free spirit whose soul was his own despite his successes. A hippy.

402. Fotografavo tutto ciò̀ che mi piaceva…

Fotografavo tutto ciò̀ che mi piaceva, tutto ciò̀ che m’incuriosiva.

Poi, quando tornavo a Firenze, mi chiudevo ore e ore nella camera oscura a sviluppare e a stampare. Avevo costruito un vero e proprio studio fotografico in una dépendance in giardino, provvisto di ogni genere di attrezzatura possibile e immaginabile.

In stamperia, poi, provavo a verificare quali effetti avrei potuto ottenere impressionando i tessuti con i miei reportage fotografici! era un gioco, un hobby che in quel momento mi appassionava e mi divertiva, ma ero abbastanza lontano dall’immaginare che nel giro di poco tempo mi avrebbe aiutato moltissimo.

Mi ritrovai comunque un archivio fotografico enorme, pieno di idee per le mie collezioni.

Avevo un po’ rallentato il ritmo del lavoro, desideravo stare più̀ tempo in famiglia. Facevamo vita ritirata, anche se non smettevo mai di pensare al tipo di evoluzione e di svolta che avrei potuto imprimere alle mie aziende.

Mi stavo leggermente disinnamorando del lavoro, ma non capivo bene cosa non andasse e cosa dovevo fare. In un certo senso ero contento di non dover più̀ sottostare alle nuove leggi della moda, che stavano cominciando a rendere tutto troppo organizzato, tutto troppo omologato.

Detestavo quella routine e la nuova piega che stava prendendo la moda, il cui processo d’industrializzazione accelerava sempre più̀ e stava rovinando la creatività̀.

Era come se mi rifiutassi di far parte del sistema e volessi rimanere il ragazzo d’una volta che faceva solo quello che voleva, desideroso di libertà creativa senza limitazioni!

Lo stesso ragazzo che aveva rifiutato di fare l’esame all’Accademia… ero cresciuto per strada come molti giovani del mio tempo e lì volevo continuare a vivere! Nomade. Il mio spirito e il mio animo, nonostante i successi, sono sempre rimasti quelli di un hippy.

In the late 80’s, Eva and I started traveling all over Morocco, Kenya, India, Nepal and Japan.

Eva loved the adventure as I did. We stayed at hotels of all kinds, met interesting people and we liked the local cuisine.

We were curious about everything. I had already visited many of those countries and was able to introduce Eva to many places familiar to me. I felt like a mentor to her.

We bought silk and other local materials which we took to local tailors to have dresses made right on the spot according to our designs. For few rupees did everything we asked and handed our finished clothes to us in just a few hours.

We liked to swim in those clean seas and then lie down on the beach for hours without thinking about anything, just us with our happiness!

We were always looking for new markets and the locals were happy to meet with us and offer their help. This was true everywhere, in Morocco as in India.

Those markets were a feast of colours and scents. Beautiful women, rich and poor alike, capitalizing on their local makeup and jewellery, made the most of themselves in their local saris or caftans.

Unique faces enhanced with coloured or black makeup according to the local traditions! We always arrived home with strange objects or fabrics that were often put aside in a few months, but it was fun to try carpets and fabrics in our Florence home… these experiments were well worth the effort.

We came back increasingly close to each other, with eyes and minds full of images, images that I captured with my camera.

I then found I have a passion for photography and I liked to think that everything I saw and photographed could become a new design for my clothes. Deserts… sunsets… trees… clouds… fish… birds… I photographed everything I liked and everything that intrigued me.

401. Marocco, Kenya, India, Nepal, Giappone…

Era la fine degli anni 80 e con Eva cominciammo a viaggiare dappertutto: Marocco, Kenya, India, Nepal, Giappone.

Eva amava l’avventura come me. Andavamo a infilarci in alberghi di ogni tipo, incontravamo persone interessanti e ci piaceva assaggiare ogni piatto della cucina locale.

Eravamo curiosi di tutto. In molti di quei paesi io c’ero già̀ stato e mi piaceva ripercorrere con Eva le stesse strade. Mi sentivo un po’ un pigmalione.

Compravo sete, abiti del luogo, correvamo a farci confezionare dai sarti del posto i vestiti che ci inventavamo sul momento, e loro per poche rupie ci cucivano tutto quello che volevamo e ce lo consegnavano in poche ore.

Ci piaceva fare il bagno in quei mari puliti e poi rimanere sdraiati per ore senza pensare a niente, soli con la nostra felicità!

Eravamo sempre alla ricerca di nuovi mercatini e la gente del posto era contenta di vederci e di offrirci il loro aiuto. In Marocco come in India.

Quei mercati erano una festa di colori e di profumi. Donne bellissime con trucchi e gioielli tipici di quei luoghi, poveri, ma incredibilmente ricchi per come li accostavano ai sari o ai caffettani.

Visi unici, con trucchi colorati, o solo neri a seconda dei luoghi! Tornavamo a casa sempre pieni di oggetti o di tessuti strani di cui spesso ci disfacevamo nel giro di pochi mesi, ma il divertimento di provare i tappeti e i tessuti nella casa di Firenze valeva certo la pena di tanta fatica.

Tornavamo sempre più̀ affiatati, con gli occhi e la mente pieni di immagini. Immagini che fissavo con la mia macchina fotografica.

Scoprii infatti di avere una grande passione per la fotografia e mi piaceva pensare che ogni cosa che vedevo e fotografavo potesse diventare una stampa per i miei abiti. Deserti… tramonti… alberi… nuvole… pesci… uccelli… Fotografavo tutto ciò̀ che mi piaceva, tutto ciò̀ che m’incuriosiva.

What special alchemy, what set of ingredients, what recipe combines to produce what we all recognize as Feminine Charm?
Is there a magic potion impossible to resist…?

Perfume, which appeals directly to our senses in a most primal way is a means through which over the millennia a woman has used her guile to seduce her hapless, helpless but willing victims.

Scents, oils of the most subtle delicacy were already in use by the ancient Egyptians over 5,000 years ago and widely used by all peoples of all civilizations surrounding the ancient Mediterranean… Greeks, Romans and Arabs.

I have always been fascinated by the power perfume has over our minds to recall feelings and memories from our past… and always with such delightful immediacy.

Even images or music can evoke a person, a special moment but scents are incredibly more powerful, more immediate. It is as if there is a direct and privileged connection, a key to unlock the archives of our minds… scents have the ability to unleash a whirlwind of sensations and evoke those moments that seemed stored away forever and relive those moments like a pleasant dream…

A fantastic dress thoughtfully completed with accessories that emphasize your image, your personality… add just two drops of perfume and that special moment will be forever imprinted in your memory…

By working with the Maîtres Parfumeurs at Coty I learned a lot about perfumes, their fragrances, their origins, their combinations…

I tried so many variations to the point of feeling elated and completely at the mercy of those pleasant feelings that each fragrance can give… sometimes soft sensations and sometimes sensations more strong, more direct…

Nature has its own perfumes. The spring and autumn as well as summer and winter have their distinctive aromas that evoke memories and remind us of past seasons.

Through nature we have learned to use and measure out the ingredients and cultivate those special, unique fragrances. Paradise is the name of my latest creation, a special scent, dedicated to women’s beauty and charm.

Quale speciale alchimia, quale insieme di ingredienti, quale combinazione di elementi crea quella magia che conosciamo con il nome di Fascino Femminile?

Il Profumo, che giunge così direttamente ai nostri sensi, è il mezzo attraverso il quale nel corso dei millenni la donna ha sedotto le sue indifese ma disponibili vittime.

Le fragranze a base di delicati oli erano già in uso presso gli antichi Egizi oltre 5000 anni fa e ampiamente usate da tutte le civiltà del Mediterraneo antico… Greci, Romani e Arabi.

Sono sempre stato affascinato dal potere che il profumo ha sulle nostre menti.

Anche le immagini o la musica riescono a evocare una persona, un momento speciale ma i profumi sono incredibilmente più potenti, più immediati. È come se vi fosse una connessione diretta e privilegiata con gli archivi della nostra mente… i profumi hanno la capacità di scatenare un vortice di sensazioni e rievocare quei momenti che sembravano archiviati per sempre e ci fanno rivivere quegli attimi come in un piacevole sogno…

Un abito fantastico sapientemente completato con gli accessori che sottolineano la vostra immagine, la vostra personalità… è sufficiente aggiungere giusto due gocce di profumo per imprimere per sempre ed in modo indelebile quel momento così speciale nella memoria…

Lavorando con i Maîtres Parfumeurs di Coty ho imparato molto sui profumi, sulle fragranze, sulle loro origini, sui loro accostamenti…

Ho provato così tante variazioni fino al punto di sentirmi inebriato ed in completa balia di quelle piacevoli sensazioni che ogni fragranza è in grado di regalare… a volte sensazioni soffici a volte più forti, più dirette.

La natura ha i suoi profumi. La primavera e l’autunno così come l’estate e l’inverno hanno i loro profumi caratteristici che evocano i ricordi delle passate stagioni.

Attraverso la natura abbiamo imparato ad usare e a dosare gli ingredienti fino ad ottenere quelle fragranze così speciali, così uniche. Paradiso è il nome della mia ultima creazione, un profumo speciale, dedicato alla bellezza e al fascino femminile.
